About this project
Split over two floors, Louie Louie will be a refreshingly new food and drink addition to the Walworth Road brought to you by the team behind Fowlds Cafe and the co-owner of The Bedroom Bar, Comedy Cafe and NOLA cocktail bar in Shoreditch.
By day Louie Louie will be a relaxed cafe offering excellent quality coffee, delicious weekday breakfast and lunch, and a killer weekend all day brunch menu.
By night Louie Louie will be a stylish bar serving up an eclectic cocktail list, wines and craft beers. Live acoustic music and DJs will play through our bespoke vintage HiFi system as our guest chefs serve up a casual dining menu to match.
Beneath the rafters downstairs lies an intimate lounge with booth seating used for showcasing live music sets in the evenings, for private parties and as a co-working space with exceptional broadband during weekday office hours.
We are nearly at our overall target but to make it all happen, we need a little help. Which is where YOU come in.
Risks and challenges
We have a great spot over two floors on the corner of Liverpool Grove, in the former Moyo Ma restaurant and next door to Santander.
We have secured a 15-year lease, we have an approved capacity of 150 and we have a liquor license in place until 23.30 midweek and 01.00 at weekends.
Refurbishment is due to begin in late August 2016.
We plan to open our doors in late October 2016.
The Walworth Road is one of the next high streets to be regenerated in London due to the level of investment into the area and its geographical location on the edge of zone 1-2. It needs a venue like this to not only cater for the existing demand but also for the inevitable increase as a result of the vast building redevelopment in the area.
Jack is a creative visual designer that has worked in a number of different medium.
Jack’s design path began with a 10-year career in the UK film and television industry working in the art department on productions such as Black Mirror, The Mighty Boosh and Peep Show. As his design career developed, it became more diverse as he moved into retail design for brands such as Sipsmith Gin, Selfridges and Johnnie Walker. It was whilst completing a Masters Degree in Product Design in 2013 that Jack wrote the brief for a pop-up cafe in an upholstery workshop forming the concept for Fowlds Cafe.
It was at this point that he approached mutual friend and brilliant cook Hanne Cole about becoming business partners in their cafe idea. The two of them opened the doors on March 8th 2014 to thirsty coffee drinkers and cake enthusiasts and since then the cafe has gone from strength to strength receiving rave reviews on social media and publications such as a four page article in World of Interiors.
It was here that Jack and Hanne met local resident:
A veteran of the music scene with a career path starting as a club DJ in mid 80s NYC, Chris has been involved in the conceptualising, launch and operation of a number of seminal venues, bars and restaurants in London (Bar Cuba, Bar Salsa, Bar Rumba, Cantaloupe, Market Place, Cargo, the Big Chill Bars and Camino) as well as music festivals (The Big Chill in the UK and Stop Making Sense in Croatia).
Via his company Bonanza Music, Chris has programmed music for brands at numerous major UK festivals (Bacardi, Ray Ban, Strongbow), and currently presents and produces radio shows for SOAS Radio and Mi Soul.
Currently he co-owns and operates the Bedroom Bar complex in Shoreditch, home to The Comedy Cafe Theatre, the TuJacks restaurant and the NOLA cocktail bar.
When approached by local cafe Fowlds for advice on a liquor license application, he met:
Hanne has been cooking professionally since 2011 where she set up the kitchen for Power Lunches, a cafe and music venue in East London. In 2012 she opened a cafe/canteen in V22 arts studios in Bermondsey, where she was catering for up to 90 hungry artists a day, on a tight budget. From here she was able to start events catering and she has now catered and managed a number of parties, weddings and private catering for clients such as The National Portrait Gallery.
Between us, we have a wealth of experience in creating a successful venue in an area of London that we all live in and know very well.
