Update #7

Media Center Integration

Hey Backers. Thanks for your constant support. We wanted to fill everyone in on some things we have been doing to bring an even better experience to the Equiso Smart TV.

While there is a lot that you can do with Android 4.0, we wanted to create a simpler experience for enjoying entertainment. We want to integrate entertainment into the interface so that you can have easier access to the movies, TV shows, music and content you love. Equiso has partnered with Plex to integrate their media center into the interface. We are stoked and love Plex, especially since we can customize it, giving us greater flexibility with what we can do with it.

Not to toot our own horn but we think Plex is pretty stoked to be working with us too. Shawn Eldridge (some bigwig at Plex) says “Plex is thrilled to be working with Equiso and their Smart TV that enables consumers to easily find and watch, listen or play with media content that enhances the viewer experience in the home.”

What about XBMC?

XBMC still needs a lot of work until it is fully ported over to android. When XBMC is ready, it will be available in the Google Play store. We will work with the XBMC dev team to help us bring over some of the features to work in plex.

I have a question, im not in the US but my family is, what happens if i buy say 10+ equiso and they are shipped to Orlando Florida, my concern is about taxes my cousin will have to deal with if i buy this product in bulk. Thanks. BTW @equiso how are you going to deal with international shipping in bulk? are you willing to do that now or in a future?.

@Equiso do you have the specs of the SoC you use, like the VPU (Video Processing Unit) specs you would need to make video players like XBMC and others to work with HD video?
      .
You said you use ffmpeg right now, but does it use the VPU or only the CPU?
      .
I heard some chip manufacturers do not release the specs. I hope you have everything you need to make everything work without relying in amateur external developers. For example for the Allwinner A10 SoC (the most popular Cortex A9 SoC), that information is available, and even with that, someone will have to write the code to use the VPU so HD video works correctly.

I agree with the idea of having the best possible experience since day 1. Plex may be good for some people, but unless you can make it open files from usb and shares, it greatly limits it's potential use...and goes against your ideal of giving the best experience and not confusing your clients/users. If users realize that for using the media center included in Equiso they need to have another computer running, they may not be pleased...maybe it makes sense for mobile phones but strange in equiso. I know you have the ability right now of playing files from USB, but not in a media center setting (library). So I hope that remains a priority to integrate XBMC into the interface, even after plex integration is done. By integration I mean you merge your interface code with XBMC so users don't have to launch XBMC as a separate app (so the movies/series/music menu would be an integral part oof the equiso interface. That's my personal perfect scenario, and it seems doable.
      .
I'm glad the Equiso team takes the software so seriously, and is working to make it the best smart tv device. Pivos hired an XBMC developer so it will be a good competitor, but it's more expensive and bigger...and it does not have your awesome remote.

XBMC is a great media center and we are working with the dev team to work out all the bugs. XBMC on android still has a long way to go until it is a finished product, that is why they won't put it in the Google Play Store. Our backers need something now to enjoy a great experience and we chose Plex because it is a finished product that has been well thought out. Also our backers will have the ability to remove Plex if they want. We don't believe in bloatware and are only putting on the essential apps that will create a better experience.

      .
So XBMC was just released for android with source code. So there is nothing preventing Equiso now from integrating XBMC in the interface....except the deal with plex.
If you value your bakers opinions and the quality and experience of your product, make XBMC a priority over Plex. Not that plex would be bad, it's just a waste of resources if you can get XBMC instead. Plex is good for other use cases and for plex creators, being commercial and all...but not the best option for a standalone, powerful device like Equiso. If there is any advantage to plex over XBMC, I don't know about it.

I think it's great if that you can bring some features from XBMC to plex android, but I'm not sure if the developers will be willing to help with that, and it may make it more difficult to later migrate to full XBMC for android.
      .
Anyway, if you can give a good experience faster, thats great. Just keep in mind that XBMC has many years of work to make it what it is today, with features such as automatic subtitle downloading and media scraping (automatically get movie cover and data-genre/actors), many plugins for lots of things, etc that would be awesome on Equiso. That is the holly grail of media centers.
      .
Atvflash for AppleTV is an example of a simpler media center that still has the most important features, and was developed by a small company, so you can look at their features for a baseline.

While I aplaud your intentions and welcome this addition, take into account the differences between plex for android and XBMC. I'm no expert, but desktop plex and mobile plex and very different programs with very different capabilities.
I understand you want to have something working as soon as possible, but if you will have to pay plex for this, what you will get is much less than what you can get from collaborating with XBMC, since the full XBMC is being ported to android, but not full plex (as far as I know).
      .
In practical terms, plex for android can't access media from usb disks or network shares, you need to have a pc with a server software always running, defeating the purpose of using Equiso in the first place. Solving this amounts to having XBMC running, which has many other features.
      .
So I think it's great to have options and something working asap, but don't let this come in the way or take effort from having a true media center running on Equiso, since plex for android is arguably not a true media center, but simply a streaming client.
      .
If you help the XBMC developers to port it to android (if they agree to) and integrate into your interface, it will be done faster, and then you can keep the code always up to date easier. Since it's not commercial but open source, you would never have licensing problems or have to pay royalties, just contribute code to the community.
      .
      Keep up the good work

As I understand it with Plex you can't just point to a share or NAS disk and get the media from there you need to run SW to server the media files. With XBMC it can read from shared directors or NAS disk wherever so this seems more general purpose to me. I don't want to have a PC only to serve data to Plex but without a XBMC option I guess I'm going to have to put together a server to pull from my NAS disks.

I am extremely pleased with this news. Although I have already purchased PLEX (and use it much), does this mean that it will come preinstalled for other buyers? Will the Equiso be purchasing licenses to be able to support different types of audio and video codecs out of the box (to ensure transcoding isn't necessary, and that DTS passes through smoothly)?
