Since I originally published the first Mageborn novel, 'The Blacksmith's Son', the series has sold well over half a million copies. I have gotten questions regarding whether/when I would make a hardback edition available. I have had softcover versions available for years, but for many, there's nothing like having a hardbound book.
In 2011, that wasn't economically feasible, at least not for an independent author, but since that time new options have become available for POD and small run publishers—options that are almost as economical as those available for large print runs.
Of course, I don't expect to make much money on print books. The vast majority of my readers are using e-readers. Creating a new hardback edition will involve a number of costs, new cover design, intial set up fees, the printing costs, and of course to sign them I will have the first run shipped to me, and then reshipped to you. I also intend to have a professional version of the world map redrawn and included within the new edition.
My first questions on my website, regarding this possibility have met with considerable enthusiasm, enough at least that I'm sure we can do this. This kickstarter is intended to formalize that.
Once the project is finished, the books should also be available in the Americas, the EU, and Australia for normal prices (without the exorbitant overseas shipping costs), so even if you can't afford to join in because of the international shipping, a small donation will help make the books available to you in the future.
Risks and challenges
The risks involved in this project should be minimal. I will have to learn a bit about formatting using different software than I have in the past, but barring a personal medical crisis I should be able to manage that without too much difficulty. I have set the funding goal high enough that if it is met I should be able to deal with any unforeseen production problems.
Finding the right artwork for the cover and a professional to redraw the map in black and white line art may present a mild challenge, but I already have a good lead on several people with the appropriate talents.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
