About

Nothing is Truer than Truth introduces Edward de Vere, A-list party boy on the continental circuit, a man whose life story is the greatest story ever written.

Nothing is Truer than Truth is a broadcast quality, feature-length documentary that incorporates art, literature, psychology, neuroscience, gender identity, and music to tell the story of the world's greatest writer. The film looks at the many ways in which the works of Shakespeare continue to inspire people from different worlds, across generations.

To bring this story to audiences around the world, we need to raise funds for additional editing, color correction, audio mix, music, and festival entry fees. We have assembled a top-quality crew of award-winnng professionals including Steve Maing, Meredith Crowley, Deborah Cessana, Paul Sharpe, and John Kusiak. We are convening an Advisory Committee made up of film industry experts and international Shakespeare scholars to assist in developing marketing and distribution strategies.

Nothing is Truer than Truth focuses on the year when De Vere traveled the Continent from his home base in Venice, gathering the material that would become the works of Shakespeare. Nothing is Truer than Truth looks at the process of writing, where life experience, imitation of the masters, and relentless revision come together to create genius, as the key to discovering Edward de Vere as the true author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare. The film reveals De Vere’s epic life story and introduces a brilliant, troubled, charming man. In 21st century Venice, an actor is both tour guide and party host.  Told through graphic animation, an overview of de Vere’s story bookends his adventures in Italy, and provides the back story and epilogue to his year of living spectacularly. The soundtrack includes British punk rock, Italian opera, and French techno pop.

The film also examines the concept of negative capability as it relates to the bisexuality throughout the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare, and in contemporary references to Edward de Vere's life. The resistance to any discussion of this critical connection between an author and the recurrent themes of his work is pervasive in academia and has made Shakespeare the ultimate outsider. Here was a writer obsessed with identity. No film has looked at the sexuality of Shakespeare and the canon as key to understanding the author's identity. Finally, the film looks at the neuroscience of Shakespeare, the known impact of his linguistic virtuosity on the cerebral cortex. Recent studies have shown increased activity in the brain when subjects are exposed to the poetry and plays in the canon, whose author was endlessly inventive with vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. What can we learn about the creative process from studying the author of the canon? The goal of the film is to engage tomorrow's great writers today by reinventing Shakespeare.

Please join us as part of the Controversy Films crew committed to bringing a new Shakespeare to new audiences around the world.

Project Update:

In 2010, the film received a grant from The Shakespeare Fellowship Foundation and I interviewed Richard Paul Roe, whose book The Shakespeare Guide to Italy was released by publisher Harper Collins in November.

In May 2011, Controversy Films crew traveled to Venice, Brenta, Padua, Mantua and Verona, where we filmed at the sites of the Shakespeare plays set in Italy, following the itinerary of Edward de Vere’s 1575-76 trip. The production included interviews with Italian television personality and author of “Shakespeare in Venice” Alberto Toso Fei, and Charles Graves, author of “Edward de Vere and Queen Elizabeth.” Deborah Cesana, location assistant for the films The Tourist and Merchant of Venice, served as Production Coordinator for the seven-day shoot, and Emmy Award winner Paul Sharpe served as Cinematographer.

Locations in Venice included the Palazzo Ducale, the Church of Santa Maria Formosa, the Church of the Greeks, La Frezzeria, the Rialto Marketplace, Titian’s studio, and the Jewish Ghetto. The crew traveled to Brenta to visit La Malcontenta, Villa Foscari, the inspiration for Portia’s Belmont in Merchant of Venice, and then on to Padua, Mantua and Verona, where we had exclusive access to many historical sites that remain virtually unchanged from the time that de Vere encountered them. In September, the crew filmed interviews with scholar Roger Stritmatter, on his seminal research on the Geneva Bible owned by Edward de Vere, and psychiatrist Richard Waugaman, whose article on the Shakespeare allusions found in the Whole Book of the Psalms ranked 4th among the most read list in the journal Notes & Queries.

In November, we filmed an interview with Tina Packer, Founder and Artistic Director of Shakespeare & Company. The film also features interviews with world-renowned Shakespeare actor and scholar Sir Derek Jacobi, Tony award winner and former Globe Theater Director Mark Rylance, Paul Nicholson, Director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Michael Cecil, 18th Baron Burghley and direct descendant of William Cecil, Lord Burghley.

Most recently, Steve and I filmed an interview with the acclaimed and controversial Artistic Director of The American Repertory Theater, Diane Paulus, whose “Shakespeare Exploded” series includes the innovative disco interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Donkey Show, and the Punchdrunk co-production of Sleep No More.

Thank you to all of our many supporters for your enthusiasm, generosity, and creativity. Film is a collaborative process and you are the key to success of Nothing is Truer than Truth.
