About this project
JUDEO offers listeners, pious or secular, a tangible sense of something greater than themselves.
Judaism and Christianity today tend to look back only a few decades, a few centuries at most, for their models of spiritual practice. JUDEO gazes back over two millennia, tracing the origins of Judeo-Christian worship to the Jerusalem Temple and exploring, musically, the spiritual nexus of these two great faiths.
JUDEO is modern music from the past.
While researching what prayer sounded like 2,000 years back in Jerusalem, at the Holy Temple, I consulted with my father, a Bible scholar. I asked what kinds of instruments were used, what texts were sung and recited. I took the Psalms and biblical verses that formed the basis of the Temple worship and composed new melodies, filtering them through artists like Peter Gabriel and U2 who gave my generation a 'religious' experience.
JUDEO is the first endeavor of the IKAR Music Lab.
The IKAR Music Lab works to create innovative new music and empower communities across the country to enhance creative approaches to prayer. A portion of the profits from the sales of JUDEO will be donated to support this important work.
JUDEO is world music, transcendent and enlightening.
Music can remind us of all that we still share and hold sacred, which far outweighs our differences. This record was made with love by Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Los Angeles from 2010 to 2012. Help us get it to the finish line by donating today.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk for any music project is failing to bring the music to listeners. There is nothing more heartbreaking than making songs and not finding ears to hear them. It will be a challenge to take JUDEO beyond its niche Jewish audience. With the funds raised through Kickstarter, we will be able to hire a marketing team, including a publicist to pursue articles in national and local print and online publications, a digital marketer to purchase well placed advertising on Facebook, Google, and elsewhere, and a radio promoter to build airplay. We will be able to reach a broad, general audience and share the music of JUDEO with its unifying themes of tolerance, transcendence and enlightenment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
