It's official! FLEX Dance Company is about to embark on its very first tour (an international one at that) and we need your help.
We will begin in Portland, OR dancing in the Galaxy Dance Festival and finish in Tijuana, MX in an exciting collaboration with Pendulo Cero Dance Company. The tour will consist of performances in theaters and performance spaces such as Conduit Dance, INC in Portland, St. Joseph's Cultural Center in Grass Valley, CA and Yeaheavy in Los Angeles, along with public performances, master classes, site-specific work and filmed dance in the great outdoors.
We have theaters booked, reservations set, flights purchased, budgets crunched, routes planned, master classes prepared; and yet we are missing one key element: funding. While we have already raised a portion of our budget through merchandise sales, garage sales and generous donations from individuals — and expect to raise a bit more from performances in the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival and a live benefit to occur in early August at Motion at the Mill in Santa Cruz — we are still left with a total of $6,000.00 to raise to make this tour possible.
What will your donation go towards?
Theater and Booking Costs We are confirmed to perform in the Galaxy Dance Festival followed by two evenings of performances at Conduit Dance in Portland. We will also be performing at St. Joseph's in Grass Valley and Yeaheavy in LA. Our venues in Auburn and Tijuana have been generously donated. Nonetheless, total theater rental/festival fee/technical support cost: $850.
Publicity As an emerging dance company out of Santa Cruz setting off to present our work in many new communities and spaces, it is imperative we get the word out. This entails posters, handouts, press releases, service announcements - the whole shebang! Total cost for publicity material: $800.
Gas/Airfare 10 Dancers + 1 Artistic Director traveling 2,262 miles. As much as we would love for all 11 of us to travel in one big tour bus for the entire time, it would simply be too expensive. This, in addition to varying schedules, necessitates taking our personal vehicles and flying two dancers to Portland - our first stop on the tour. Total transportation costs amount to just over $1030.
Meals We are fortunate to have great friends with access to great food — and while we are already receiving donations and making every effort to leave stocked with as many non-perishable goods as possible, we are still looking at our largest tour expense in food costs. It even hurts us to say how much this amounts to: $2,620.
Housing While some of the stops along the tour will be in the hometowns of our company members and artistic director, making it possible to cut costs by staying with friends and family, there will still be several evenings that will require paying either for motel room(s) — we'll sleep 3 to a bed if need be — and/or campsite and park entrance fees. We are budget travelers and know where to find the deals, and even still, are looking at a cost of $700 for the two week tour.
We know! It's a lot of money and we have such little time to raise it, which is why we have turned to KICKSTARTER and each one of you to turn this dream into reality. While $10 is our lowest reward tier, any amount may be donated. Every dollar counts.
Remember: Kickstarter operates on an ALL-OR-NOTHING funding model. This means that if we do not reach our goal, not a single donation will be processed and we will not receive any of the funds.
★ This is the section where we implore you to share this with any and all friends, family and acquaintances who may be willing to help us reach our funding goal. Please, please, please. ★
We are in the homestretch and your contribution, yes your's, will truly mean the difference. We cannot thank you enough for helping us make this 2012 SUMMER TOUR possible. From Santa Cruz, CA and each of us at FLEX Dance Company, we would like to say, simply and humbly:
