Update #4 - Backgrounds!

Hey everybody, thanks so much to our backers! We’re at 70% and so thankful of the support so far!

Angele here, and today I’m going to show you guys a background I just completed for Starwhal. We’ve started calling it The Mighty Spacetopus.

During a meeting while the other guys were discussing AI or collisions or something else that’s probably really important, I started doodling a giant octopus eating a planet.

Then working from that concept, I took it into Photoshop to play around with it. I dropped the tusk and cute face and made him more gruesome.

I drew him in grey scale as a starting point to make sure the pose was strong and easy to read.

I paid special attention to the lighting and texture. Most of the image has cool colors, black, purple, and blue and the warmth coming off the planet and his eye made for a nice contrast. It took a lot of detail on his skin and the planet’s surface to convey the scale. I wanted him to look massive and imposing.

After this is all done, I export it in layers for it to be added into the game. It has layers of smoke that will move to give it depth and some of the limbs will sway to give a hint of life and movement.

Hope you all enjoyed seeing a bit of the process of making a background for STARWHAL! We can’t wait for you to see the rest when the game is released!

      I love it. This rules.

I also, however, love the smiley face on the original concept. Maybe you've just got the magic touch.
