So we already had someone build us an arcade cabinet for our game… you might be thinking: “doesn’t that mean you guys, like, won videogames?” If STARWHAL: Just The Tip is already so huge and successful, why Kickstart at all?
Glad you asked!
WE NEED TO KICKSTART BECAUSE WE WANT EVERY MAN, WOMAN, AND BABY-HUMAN-CHILD TO PLAY STARWHAL NO LESS THAN MOST OF THE TIME, ALL OF THE TIME. WE MUST ACHIEVE THIS GOAL BY THE YEAR 1999.
This will prevent the apocalypse.
More to the point, we think this is an opportunity to make STARWHAL a bigger and better game. We’re getting a lot of press and a lot of plays, and we want to poke while the proverbial neon heart is exposed. If you choose to support us, we promise we will make this the best multiplayer space narwhal combat simulator that will ever be made.
We want to do a lot more with STARWHAL: Just The Tip. With some money, we can afford to throw more development hours at tasks like:
- Finishing arenas and visual themes - so you can battle across the coolest locations from time and space.
- Singleplayer Challenge Modes - so you can enjoy STARWHAL with friends or in the most focused, intense, self-developing alone-time conceivable.
- Add computer controlled opponents - computers make the best punching bags.
- Include more play modes - example: Team Mode. Because STARWHALs are very social creatures.
- Diversify costumes and colors - so you can dress to impress!
- Implement taunt functionality - you haven’t lived until you’ve heard the beautiful song of the STARWHAL calling to an opponent. Let's add a button for that.
- Stuff we haven’t even thought of yet... but which will make the game 10,000% better. When we're not playing STARWHAL: Just The Tip, we're looking for ways to improve it!
The “too long, didn’t read” version is: YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS LEAD TO GAME = MORE BETTERER, SOONER!
Making games is a lot more work than most people probably ever imagine. We love it and we do it because we are extraordinarily passionate about games, but the simple fact is that it takes up a lot of time and effort. To date, Breakfall has made all our games under our own steam and with our own hard-earned savings, because we believe. We believe so damn hard.
HOWEVER, we have a lot of costs that require real-world cash-money for this project:
- Computer software. Pirating your tools is not sanctioned on the homeworld of the STARWHAL, nor should it be done here on Earth.
- Shiny new licenses for our game engine. This would allow us to add COOL features and effects and get the game running as fast as possible.
- Console development expenses. See the platforms sections. We know you want it in your living room.
- Legal and business costs. They wear the suits so we don’t have to. This stuff isn’t exciting, but if you don’t do it, we hear that the man steals all your money.
- Bringing STARWHAL to the people! We like to try to leave our basements once in a while to bring the STARWHAL hype train to conferences, festivals and events. But then we learned that cars, planes and trains run on gasoline, not love.
We're very pleased to be able to announce that STARWHAL: Just The Tip is already pre-approved for release on Steam!! The keys we’re giving away as rewards are Steam keys for the PC/Mac/Linux version of the game.
But we want everybody to have a chance to play STARWHAL: Just The Tip, so we’re also looking at a variety of different platforms for release. Getting the game up and running on different platforms is another task that will take some significant effort. We're working closely with console platform holders to see this happen.
Your contributions mean getting it to the console platforms faster as well! Right now we're coming to Wii U and Playstation 4. We're also looking into other consoles such as Xbox One, and OUYA.
As previously stated, making a game is really hard. However, the crew at Breakfall has the chops to see it through to the end. We’ve already done that with our previous title, Marvin’s Mittens, which we developed together for many months before STARWHAL.
The Breakfall team brought this big adventure game to reality from scratch and will do it again with STARWHAL: Just the Tip. We also continue to gain EXP and level up both individually as well as a team. We have industry experience making games for various studios on everything from home consoles to tablets. For us, making awesome games is a deep passion which exceeds even consuming deli sandwiches.
We’ve got ambitions. Here are some of them:
We want to reward you guys for coming along for this wacky ride. Here are a couple of the rewards you will see waiting for you:
A Game Key for a digital copy of STARWHAL: Just the Tip on either Steam or Wii U - you can choose one or the other. All future updates to STARWHAL will be released free of charge, including the single player content packs. Whoa!
Narwhal Pinback Buttons featuring some of the gnarliest Starwhals. Everyone could use more flare.
A 12x18" Poster with the same art that was displayed on the Fantastic Arcade 2013 arcade cabinet! Perfect for any bedroom.
The soundtrack is still growing, but already contains over 25 minutes of radical original grooves. We'll send you all of it, in mp3 format.
Design a Costume! We'll let you help us design a new costume for the STARWHALs. You pitch an idea, and if it's not impossible or terribly offensive we'll make it happen!
Put your face in the game! Harkens back to old games like GoldenEye 64 where the staff put themselves in as characters (remember Dr. Doak!?) Give us a photo of your face and we'll add it to a rider on a STARWHAL for all players on Earth to enjoy! What's more, you can name this rider of yours as well (no profanities). How cool is that!?
Make an Arena! We're looking to add awesome new arenas for these space creatures to play in. You pitch your idea given the set of building blocks we have, and we'll make it happen! You also get to name the level (no profanity, please!). We reserve the right to work with you on a new idea if for some reason the idea isn't coming together.
Turn your idea into a new Background! Pitch an idea to our environment designer to make a new wacky location for STARWHAL combat. Let's see what you've got! (We'll try to accommodate your request as best as possible, but reserve the right to work with you on a new idea if it's not coming together.)
If you’ve read this many words into the campaign you are already on our short-list of “favorite people ever”, but we’re looking forward to adding you to the “even more favorite peoples ever” list if you support our space-narwhal cause.

We’re excited to get this party started. Who brought the tunes?
Risks and challenges
Ok, serious talk time. Did we mention making games is a lot of work? There’s a pretty significant amount of effort involved to take STARWHAL from its current state to the APEX PREDATOR OF INDIE GAMES it could be.
We’ve already made it really far into development and brought it to festivals, shown it to hundreds of thousands of fans, and we’re confident we’ve got something fun to give you. If you haven’t already tried it, go check out the early web build version and see for yourself! (http://starwhal.com/demo.html)
We’re also confident this can be brought to you pretty soon if we have your support. Confident, but not certain. Our release dates may slip if we have some unforeseen glitches pop up or if we feel the game needs more sparkles. In our quest to perfect the strange alchemy of floppy physics and heart piercing, we can’t guarantee there won’t be some setbacks or delays for all the features we want to include.
Our team has a ton of indie and professional development experience at Breakfall and other studios. We’ve been down this road before and we know the waters can get scary sometimes. The flip side of this is we are committing to 100% transparency with you on what’s going on with development. You should know that committing to a kickstarter is always risky in some way, but we will be with you every step of the way. But not in a creepy way! We’ll just be cool and awesome about it, ok?
STARWHAL: Just The Tip is a local multiplayer game only. We would like to include online play as well, but there are some significant challenges to doing a responsive, physics based game online. We are investigating what we can do with regards to network play, but we can’t make any promises on network multiplayer at all.
So delivering on specific features at specific dates is hard to absolutely guarantee. The promise we can make it that you will get an amazing version of STARWHAL: Just the Tip. Features we’re promising at various stretch goals will make it into the game as soon as we’re humanly able to implement them and when they meet our satisfaction.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
