Marriage Equality and Beyond in Texas

"As matter of law, I do not see that we have any choice but to seek to ensure that gays have full civil rights." — Molly Ivins, in The Texas Observer, May 1993

The fight for LGBT rights in Texas has never been more critical. A Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality could lead to months of chaos if state officials attempt to defy it. The Texas Legislature is considering more than 20 anti-LGBT bills that would criminalize transgender people, attack same-sex marriages and overturn local nondiscrimination protections.

With a federal ruling on marriage equality coming this summer, Texas could be dragged toward equality kicking and screaming.

The Texas Observer is committed to covering all of it, providing in-depth, investigative reporting of the inevitable legal challenges and anti-LGBT backlash in the wake of a ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. We're also eager to follow big stories across the state as the battle moves from the courts to communities.

Donating to this campaign will give us the resources for our journalists to travel the state reporting on critical LGBT-related issues and sharing the stories of the state's movement for equality. As a 501(c)3 non-profit publication, your donation is fully tax-deductible.

For over 60 years, the award-winning Observer has dedicated itself to shining a light on injustice and to sharing stories critical to the public interest. Our reporting on the evolving movement for LGBT equality spans decades. We've provided ongoing coverage of LGBT issues in the 84th Texas Legislature so far, but we know there is still more to do even after the session ends.

Your support will ensure we have the resources to track the major developments of what will be a historic summer for equality and important LGBT rights stories across Texas.
