Latchkeys is one of many stories from the Mythallica Universe and the first of Mikhail Sebastian’s imaginative creations to come to life in animated form. The Latchkeys is a call back to the nostalgic films of the 80’s and the definitive cartoons of the 90’s to early 2000’s. Blending the classic coming of age story elements with modern Sci-fi-Fantasy components to create a fun and whimsical world where literally anything is possible. The series focuses on the adolescent mind and problems faced when growing minds and morals attempt to process events that happen in their lives on a daily basis. And how it ultimately affects and shapes the way they see the world. It challenges topics such as bullying, stress, learning disabilities and other issues that children face but rarely feel comfortable discussing. A task we seek to do in a creative way that focuses on the importance of challenging these issues head on instead of allowing them to fester and grow with the child into their adult lives. The Latchkey motto is simple: “To release the pain that’s locked within, unlock the door to let people in.” The show would provide a unique perspective as it dives into the real emotional and existential problems of children from all walks of life. From the fortunate to the burdened.
When the children of Keygen Cove find themselves home alone without parental supervision, strange things begin to happen. A supernatural phenomenon coined “The Homeunculus Effect” enables the houses to come to life in ways that directly reflect whatever the child (or children) imagine. The presence of an adult gives off a natural pheromone that suppresses the supernatural energies of the home. But in their absence, the houses take on an entirely different form. From vast oceans filled with pirates, to intergalactic battles in deep space; the possibilities are limitless. However, should the children’s imaginations get out of control and negatively affect what the houses create, the Latchkeys are there to help. The more intense a Child's emotional state, the more dangerous the houses become. Their mission: contain the supernatural manifestations and the emotional turmoil of the homes before the parents return. Meelo, Guava, Camila, and Jessie - along with the other Latchkey Squads throughout Keygen Cove - learn that being a Latchkey is more than just the name. On their adventures they uncover the mysteries of the houses metaphysical abilities, eventually uncovering the origins of the secretive Latchkey organization, all while dealing with the day to day struggle of being a kid. But will they be prepared for the return of an ancient threat the likes of which they’ve never seen?
Meelo (11) is the youngest child of three siblings; all of which are constantly preoccupied in their own lives, and barely seem to notice Meelo exists. His eldest sister (Mayla) is dedicated to being a superstar, while his big brother (Meshawn) has little interest in anything outside of his computer, phone and Tablet. This leaves Meelo on his own more than he’d care to admit. His mother and father are both consumed by their jobs which keep them busy more often than not. But he’s never been incapable of making fun for himself. When he’s not on his Latchkey missions, he loves to read manga, which he prefers over comic books, and riding his bike throughout town with his best friend, Guava. As the Leader of his team, Meelo calls the shots, which he sometimes forgets only really applies on their missions - this can make him a little bossy at times. Quick witted and great at thinking on his feet, he commands his team with carefully thought out strategies approached with tactical precision. But his trusting and approachable nature can often get him and his team into some easily avoidable situations.
Camila (10) is the oldest of 3. Her younger twin siblings Diego and Vella, are often the bane of her existence while her parents work as the most successful lawyer couple in town (also, the only lawyer couple in town.) Her spitfire spirit often makes her come off as a know it all. But what else can you expect when she usually has to keep her little siblings from getting into trouble. This care and compassion translates to everyone she meets, which on the surface makes her a natural at making new friends. She does sometimes get easily overwhelmed, and this sort of forces her to shut down completely. But that doesn’t mean she’s above scrapping it out if necessary and has no problem getting her hands dirty.
Guarav "Guava" Patel
Guava (10) is the youngest of the Patel brothers. His father is a mechanic and his mother an accomplished IT Specialist. His older brother Rahj spends most of his time with his band, Listening While Def. Guava is a major film fanatic and takes it upon himself to document his Latchkey adventures - all for the sake of building his sacred collection. He prides himself on his cinematic intellect and is always voicing the importance of “seeing the bigger picture”. This makes him a great asset whenever they find themselves in a tight bind with no way out. As Meelo’s right hand man, he is somewhat of a comic relief when things get a little too serious. His joking nature is the only way he knows how to cope with stressful moments to keep a leveled head. Although he sometimes has a problem with discerning when it is the right time for it. Regardless, he is in many ways the glue that keeps the Latchkeys together through the best and worst of times.
Jessie (11) is an only child who was raised by her mother mostly after her parents separated. However she recently moved to Keygen Cove with her dad following the sudden passing of her mom. He spends most of his time working in order to support the both of them which leaves Jessie alone to herself a lot. Jessie doesn’t say much. When she does, she’s very soft spoken and shy. She can be somewhat distant. Processing her feelings and thoughts internally. She doesn’t care much for conflict and would rather let things fall in place on their own. But as a Latchkey, she learns that sometimes you have to put yourself out there in order to make things happen.
Everyone has a story. But not everyone has the ability to tell it. And if they do, they rarely have the opportunity to in the mainstream pursuit. Places like Kickstarter put the power into the hand of the people to invest into the stories they want to see. It also allows creators to create their visions like only they can. Without money and merchandise being the driving force of whether or not something is good enough. Latchkeys is a project with substance. It means something to not only the people involved, but potentially the people willing to invest into its fruition. The money raised in this campaign will go towards the fulfillment of the Short film. Including pre-production and post production necessities. As well as the fulfillment of the rewards for all the dedicated backers.
