Remember, if this project doesn't reach the goal you aren't charged and I don't get anything. Just sayin'.
Thank you for being interested in backing music projects on kickstarter. This particular project is to help make and release (on Old Squid Records) the first full length album by The Strangest Places (yours truly) entitled Premature Awakenings. The bulk of the money I am trying to raise will go towards mixing (http://mobtownstudios.com/), mastering, and having CDs and t-shirts made. None of it is going in my pocket!
So you may ask yourself, "why?" to which I would say, "why not?"... Last summer I put out a 3 song EP that really helped me figure out my voice (like as in songwriting) and hone my sound. One of those songs "Could Someone" is sort of the north star I used while making the rest of the songs for new this album. The Washington City Paper called it "a moody bedroom-pop song"...So if you like that song, chances are you will like the others when the album is finished. If you watched the video above (thanks for filming it Smee!), an acoustic instrumental version of "Could Someone" is playing in the background. And a note on the vocals, that's what I've focused the most on improving since last summer. I've been taking voice lessons so that aspect of the music will be much improved.
Here is the video made for me by Kathryn, Mitch & Jeffrey.
And here is the soundcloud version:
Oh and why not like the facebook page?
On to the fun stuff!
As soon as the project ends, you will be able to download an acoustic version of "Could Someone" that I've been working these last few weeks as a special kickstarter reward.
The album, Premature Awakenings, will be out in July 2013. So all digital downloads and physical CDs will be received then.
The t-shirt has yet to be designed. I can guarantee it will soft, lightweight and comfortable.
PJ Smithey is doing the album art. One of the rewards is a 12" x18" print of the full sized art. You can choose from the front or back cover:
Wait, go to shows with me? Yeah, I like to see live music, and Daughter and Twin Shadow are playing soon, so let's go see them together!
Digital Paintings by William Mortiz: These will be custom creations incorporating you and one of your weirdest or most fantastic dreams. The final product will delivered to you on a canvas. http://www.behance.net/gallery/Digital-Paintings/892964
Everything else seems pretty self-explanatory. If there is a reward you would like me to offer just send me a message and perhaps I'll add a new reward.
Remember, you will not be charged until after the project meets or exceeds the $3,000 goal. And as we get closer I will be adding some stretch goals that I think will be pretty fun too.
Thanks for checking out my project. Happy kickstarting!
Risks and challenges
Well, all of the songs are in various stages of completeness. I plan on having them ready for mixing by the time the project ends, so there shouldn't be a problem there. I guess there could be challenges with the tangible rewards of this project (t-shirts, CDs, art, etc) however I plan on (and have budgeted for) working with reputable companies and individuals, so I don't foresee an issue with those items either.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
