Saturday is the story of a dark, creative little girl named India, a frustrating week, and the wild ride back to (almost) normal.

It's the story of creativity running wild, then poked, prodded and taunted into submission, and finally running wild again.  It's about how frustrating and lonely it feels to be stuck, in any sense of the word.  It's also about needing help and getting it, sometimes from unexpected and wonderful places.

"Saturday" follows a little girl named India and her parents Fred and Elizabeth.  Their week starts off somewhere along the lines of "good enough", ends up in "mediocre" territory, and slowly but surely works its way down to pitiful.  As the audience, we see all of them get into this mess and try to figure their way out.

Saturday is my dream project.  I wanted to create a book that the ten year old me and the 30 year old me would pick up and read again and again.  I love detail, good craftsmanship, quirky and sincere stories, and humor.  I figured if I was marketing to myself, I'd better include all of these elements.  I'm sure there are all sorts of folks who also love these things and want to discover this kind of book.

I had the initial idea for "Saturday" about five years ago.  From the story arc to character concepts and design, "Saturday" evolved and changed in that time.  I had a bunch of false starts.  I threw away entire pages.  Eventually, I felt confident (and frustrated) enough about the story to begin the initial pages.

Two years later, I'm a little under half way finished with the book.  Here's why: It's an ambitious project.  Each page is 11" x 17", with around 25 panels each.  A couple of the pages are full page spreads.  When it's all said and done, there will be between 32-36 pages pages.  Now, I'm no good at math, so I'll just guess that's somewhere around a billion panels.

At this point, I can only work on "Saturday" before and after (paying) work.

Think of yourself as a producer.  This isn't you throwing money into the ether.  This is you backing an idea you think is good and helping to bring this project to life.

This campaign can buy me time.  Your support can turn "Saturday" into a full time job rather than just something I work on whenever I can scrape the time together.  That means, by contributing, you could see this book in half the time.

If you help me make this goal, I can prioritize "Saturday".  That means I can work on this book until I go cross-eyed and can't remember my own name.  And then I can work some more.  And I can do this until this book is a reality.  Make no mistake: This baby was meant for print and that's the priority.  I always wanted this book to be something you can hold in your hands, turn the pages, and feel.

So please, help me forget my own name.

Thanks.

The above rewards AND a great digital version of one of my favorite illustrations from the book. It's one of several background "photographs" (this is in quotes because the "photographs" are illustrations, not actual photos) that help characterize India (she's attempting science in a Boris Karloff sort of way). Only part of it's visible in the book, so you get to see all of it with this reward.

Everything you've read in the rewards section up until this one (assuming you've read from the top down) AND high quality prints of ALL the photos. There's one with pirates and one inspired by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". The latter is one of my favorite illustrations I've ever done and is intensely fun. So, just to recap, this reward gets you SIX awesome prints of artwork that I promise you can't get elsewhere.

All of the above swag AND a high quality print of the completed page of the story in which they're featured. This is an 11" x 17" page with beautiful color and detail and one of the best pages in the book.

Every preceding reward AND a high quality print of an additional page from the book AND a high quality print of the layout sketch of that page. None of these pages have been released and I never give away sketches, which means there's more crazy stuff in this reward than in Mos Eisley Spaceport! You'll also receive a finished book once it's finally finished.

Every reward here. Let's review what this means: A full set of digital artwork, a full set of "photograph" illustration prints (six total), TWO full 11" x 17" prints of completed pages from the book and the layout sketch of one of them, a book of character concepts, sketches and notes with a personal thank you from me, and a completed copy of the book when it's ready. But at this level, I want to give you something special. There's an illustration in the book. It's a two page spread (which makes it 11" x 34"). Very few people have seen it. It's the most ambitious, imaginative, fun illustration I've ever done. It has medieval characters and objects. It has futuristic gadgets. It has robots. It has a samurai. It is epic. I think it took me six months or more to finish. And I will make three extremely nice prints, sign and date them, and send you one in some kind of adamantium shipping container. It may or may not be handcuffed to the delivery man's wrist.
