Let's Talk About the Game

It’s one of the great questions of our time. Which is scarier: zombies or werewolves? For generations this has puzzled commoner and philosopher alike. But now, the question will be answered. Which supernatural entity has the power to cause the most terror in the unsuspecting citizens of some nameless town? Only you can decide.

Zombies vs Werewolves is a fast-paced card game for 2 players that takes roughly 15 minutes (or less) to play. It’s simple, competitive, and all about determining who can score the most Terror Points against a group of Citizens before the game ends.

Play begins by selecting 6 Citizen cards at random and laying them out on the table face up. Each person chooses one deck of cards (either Zombies or Werewolves) to play with. During each player's turn, they will be able to play a card from their hand and then draw back up to a hand limit of 5 cards. Cards played are either Terror cards (cards with a number from 2-6 and 8) or Special Event cards (unique cards with special abilities that can each be used once per game). Each player plays Terror cards on Citizens to try and exceed the Citizen's Courage rating; the player that exceeds the Courage rating first frightens that Citizen and prevents the other player from claiming them at the end of the game. Play continues until all Citizens have been frightened. Then the total Terror points played on all frightened Citizens is added up on each side.

The player with the most Terror Points at the end will be declared the victor, proving once and for all (or until you play again) that their side is the scarier of the two.

Didn't I See You Here Before?

Yes, you might have. Zombies vs Werewolves was up on Kickstarter earlier in the year and didn't make the loftier funding goal I had in mind at that time. I have since been able to negotiate a smaller print run and self-funded more of the game to offset the costs down quite a bit. My hope with this campaign is that I can cover the last little bit necessary to make the print run happen with a cool new special edition cover thrown in for good measure.

How it Came to Be

This is my first project and I am happy to say that it has been a fun, educational and rewarding experience the entire way through. I've always enjoyed designing games and with Zombies vs Werewolves I've had the privilege to bring one to life.

Zombies vs Werewolves started as an argument over 12 years ago between myself and a close friend. We debated often as to which side was the scarier of the two: each quoting movies, books, video games, personal fears, random ideas and other pop-culture references.

Of course we never came to an agreement and it became a long standing joke to bring up at social events. I'd go up to people when conversation took a lull and say, "So, I've got a question. Which do you think is more terrifying: Zombies or Werewolves?" Much to amazement people always had a strong opinion about the matter and would sometimes launch into debates of their own. It got me thinking that maybe the theme could make a fun, simple care game. A couple of months of design, a few more of focus testing, and the game you see before you was born.

So Why Kickstarter?

Seems like an obvious question, but it does bear explaining. While I have self-funded all of the art, graphic design and initial test print runs (yes, the game is done and ready for print), I am looking to reach out to the vibrant kickstarter community to help expand my print run and spread the word.

All of the funds gained through kickstarter are going directly to the production costs involved in securing the next print run of the game, including the art costs for the special edition cover.

What's the Next Step?

If you've read this far I'm sure you are intrigued enough to help support this project in whatever rewards category most interests you. With your help and generous donations, Zombies vs Werewolves can be more than just my dream come true, but an enjoyable addition to your gaming shelf or coffee table. And besides, there's still that question that you need to answer for yourself: which IS scarier? Send your responses to whichisscarier@gmail.com. (you know you have an opinion and I'd love to hear it) :)

Risks and challenges

Since Zombies vs Werewolves has already had some smaller initial print runs, I feel confident with both the printer and fulfillment method that will be used to get the game out and into the hands of those that pledge. All content has already been acquired except for the special edition cover, which will be finished by late Jan. With your help in funding, I will be able to get the print run made and shipped out to everyone on or before Mar 2013.
