Greetings, it's Matt and Annanie here, and we'd like to share our story with you about the founding and plans for Forever Bee. We are a small family run apiary that produce our own honey and bee products serving our local Southern Alberta community and beyond.
We began a few short years ago in 2012 with just one jar of creamed honey. We bootstrapped our business by carefully reinvesting our proceeds while following best beekeeping and customer service practices.
We pride ourselves in taking the greatest care in following the most natural and sustainable beekeeping practices that are best for bees, the environment and serving our customers with the healthiest quality products. We bolster this with exemplary customer service including free delivery, free Canadian shipping, and a personal touch born of genuine caring for our community.
We have grown to serve several local markets in the Calgary and Lethbridge Alberta regions. These include the Lethbridge Farmers Markets on Saturdays at Exhibition Park, and on Wednesdays in the downtown core.
Our products are also enthusiastically supported in Lethbridge at the Urban Grocer and Naturistas.
We also serve the Okotoks Farmer's market on Fridays, and are part of several seasonal markets, including the truly amazing Spruce Meadows Christmas Market.
In Calgary we are featured at the Symons Valley Ranch Farmers Market through our organic farmer friends at A Fork in the Rowed. We have recently been accepted to join the Grassroots Deerfoot Farmers Market, the Market on Macleod, and the Bearspaw Lions Farmers Market.
We have a stellar on-line store featuring loads of product information, easy self-serve ordering, automated fulfilment notification, and customer interaction through online chats, and our thriving 4everbee Facebook community.
All of our products and services enjoy consistent and enthusiastic Five-Star ratings across the board from our amazing customers and supporters.
We are truly grateful to our community, and we hope to do even more to serve in the best ways we can!
We are most privileged to have the fantastic support of our local community including the wisdom of multi-generational beekeepers and enthusiastic customers who appreciate the value of what we do and the natural way we do it.
The new honey season is upon us and we are even now out in the fields preparing hives and tending our bees, who are busily gathering nectar and pollen, building and filling honeycomb cells, and breeding new bees that support our main honey production.
We tried our hand last season at producing our own honeycomb and enjoyed an amazing response. People are so appreciative of being able to enjoy and share this delicious and nostalgic treat. We weren't able to make nearly enough honeycomb last year to meet our sudden demand and are now most inspired to expand this part of our service.
We are dearly hoping to be able to purchase 25 new specialized hives dedicated to honeycomb production this season to help to meet our growing demand. Time is running short to get these in place in time to catch the full season.
Due to recent environmental changes, bees and hives are in short supply and high demand, making this is an expensive proposition for such a small family run business. We have come to realize that if we are going to be able to do this now, then we are going to need your help!
Current costs for specialized honeycomb beehives in our region including nucs, bees, brood boxes, frames, bases, lids, queen excluders, supers, specialized half-height honeycomb container frames and labour are on the order of $1000 per hive.
We have more than enough demand to warrant a modest investment in 25 additional dedicated honeycomb hives this season. We intend to handle the first 5 of these through our own resources, but we need to raise at least $25,000 to purchase another 20.
- 20 Honeycomb hives at $1,000 $20,000
- Rewards for Kickstarter campaign supporters $ 2,500
- Kickstarter fees: 5% of funds raised $ 1,250
- Credit card processing fees: 3 - 5% $ 1,250
- Total $25,000
If we are fortunate enough to exceed our funding target, we would love to be able to invest in even more honeycomb hives, to expand our community outreach programs and to be able to offer more on-site farm tours.
We can't even count the times that we are totally blown away by the kindness and generosity of our wonderful community. We're always remarking on how we just have the best customers! We appreciate more than words can say all of our daily interactions that taken together form a life that is truly blessed.
We love being a part of bringing about the changes we want to see in the world, in our own modest way. If you share our love for the environment and recognize the importance of an abundance of healthy bees and the miraculous things they do and make for us all, including nutritious and delicious honeycomb, then please consider supporting our efforts.
Risks and challenges
Beekeepers in Alberta face many challenges including long cold winters, floods, fires, drought, mites, fungi, bacteria, viruses, pesticides, resistance to treatment, bears, skunks, wasps, ants and even deliberate hive theft or vandalism!
We have been most fortunate to receive expert mentorship from local beekeepers having multi-generational experience, and they are always happy to assist whenever needed.
By knowing the threats, keeping careful watch, and making smart choices according to beekeeper best practices, these risks can most often be successfully avoided or reduced. Our own hives have suffered only minimal losses over our 5 years in operation because we diligently care for our bees. We use the most natural methods we can, but we are also practical. We do everything we must to keep our bees healthy, happy, strong and thriving, enabling them to produce the most healthy and delicious honey products available anywhere.
For honeycomb production in particular, hives need to be extra strong to be able to pull comb. Our method of having the bees build honeycomb right inside containers reduces the amount of comb required. We help make the bees job even easier by pre-coating the bottom of our containers with beeswax.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
