What and why?:
Little Star is a game about life. On the outside it is a retro stylized rougelike platformer that is heavily influenced by Super Meat Boy, Mega Man and Spelunky. The story is where Little Star will set itself a part from its influences. It is a game that deals with the home life of a renown hero, which is a polar opposite from how the public perceives them.
I recently dealt with some issues in my life that lead to the decision to create a game about issues that people deal with everyday such as; financial troubles, sickness, depression and death.
The funds raised for this game will help provide me with the tools and equipment necessary to create this experience to the best of my ability. A comic book style story presentation is also something that will need to be funded with your help, as an artist in California named Kyle Huston will complete the work similar to what they have completed below:
I feel this project could connect with gamers on a more personal level if the topics discussed in the game story are relatable.
Little Star is a reflection of my personal life over the past two and a half years. I recently went through some life events that I feel comfortable opening up about and sharing through this project in an effort to help others that may be dealing with these emotions and life altering paths they may be on.
I dealt with divorce and losing my home after a rough court battle. This lead to bankruptcy and a myriad of financial troubles that ultimately landed me back at my parents house on my 30th birthday. I used this time to get myself back on track financially and emotionally and it was at this time that I decided to get into game development.
Things seemed good for a while until my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer seemingly out of nowhere. My mother was my rock and the healthiest and strongest person I knew. She was a fighter, even up until her untimely passing.
I lost my mom earlier this year and it was by far the hardest thing I have ever faced. I still deal with the hardship and depressive state I am in on a daily basis. I am in a better place now and feel comfortable sharing and moving forward with this project. I want to use it as a teaching tool and as a memorial to my mother.
She believed in me and made me feel OK to be a thirty-something living at home working on a video game. I am still fueled by her positivity and use her as an inspiration on this journey.
I feel the game will also stand on its own as a great platforming/rougelike experience even if the story is not your cup of tea.
To give you a better idea about the actual gameplay I have included a downloadable demo which you can access here: http://www.indiedb.com/engines/gamemaker/downloads/littlestardemo
Keep in mind that this is very early in development and many changes and updates are coming, so the demo displayed is not representative of final gameplay. There are a TON of things I am still working on, such as:
- Different Environments (Planets)
- More enemies that are level specific
- Spaceship gameplay (Think Shmup gameplay)
- Better character and environment design all around
- A weapons and inventory system
- Dynamic level events
- Much much more including the input of Little Star backers!
Right now I have a pretty modest goal to bring this game to PC. Being a console gamer at heart, I would love this project to be included on various platforms including the Xbox One and Playstation 4. If we can fund this game over the original goal of 7,000, I will bring Little Star to consoles! More about that coming soon...
Just do it:
With all of this being said, Let's get Little Star funded. Let's fund it for those who are hurting and pondering their existence. Let's fund it for people like my mom who believed in the "little guy" like me. I need your help and I can't do this alone. Stand with me and make Little Star a reality!
Risks and challenges
I am a one person team at this point and I think the biggest challenge will be how fast I can produce content for the game. If funding reaches above the funding goal, I will gladly reach out to other developers to collaborate, create art assets, music etc..
I have an idea to have the game completed in the Spring of next year and depending on the funding and production issues I run into, that could change.
With enough funds and your input, I am positive Little Star will be the best game we can make it and I am looking forward to the challenges and experiences I run into along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
