Stretch Goal Time!
We're thrilled to be in a position to even think about stretch goals. $2000 will cover our costs for our initial print run, but we're not finished with Sela, Robb, the Captain, et al. Everything pledged beyond our original goal will be used to fund the art, color and lettering of our next issue, and this story only gets bigger, we promise.
Of course, we want to say thank you for any additional contributions that make it possible for us to continue this tale, so....
Stretch Goal #1: $2500 ALL backers who pledge $25 or more will receive a Cannons in the Clouds stone coaster featuring our winged skull logo. Backers who pledge $50 or more will be the proud owners of CitC-branded tote bags. Let's do this!
Cannons in the Clouds is an ongoing digital comics series for middle grade and young adult readers published by Alterna Comics. We're planning to produce a 114-page full color trade paperback full of gorgeous art, high adventure and unforgettable characters for whom the sky is no limit. And we need your help!
Cannons in the Clouds tackles gender, class and colonialism through a steampunk-inspired lens of high fantasy adventure. The story follows the adventures of Sela Windbourne, a spunky teenage girl with her head in the clouds, literally. Sela lives in a world of floating islands - the surviving fragments of a once-powerful lost civilization - where she dreams of escaping the rigid rules of her aristocratic upbringing. When she finds herself on the run from a bloodthirsty conspiracy, her course collides with a young steeplejack named Robb Cadman.
While Robb lacks Sela’s wealth or influence, he possesses an uncanny connection with diametal, the mysterious substance that powers flying ships and fuels their entire civilization. As they try to unravel the true motives of their pursuers, the pair must join forces with unlikely allies - a crew of pirates captained by the notorious Jenny Avery - to keep their world from crashing down.
CitC So Far
Cannons in the Clouds started life in a kitchen table conversation between old friends back in the fall of 2012. After Daniel and Anne had hashed out the world of CitC and drafted a script for Issue 1, Daniel got in touch with his long time collaborator Jorge Donis to bring the story to life. Alterna Comics took our story on in 2013, and the first five issues are now available on Comixology. Check them out here!

How You Can Help
We need your support to bring Cannons in the Clouds into print (unfortunately, our efforts to convince printing companies to accept our all-consuming love of the comics medium as payment have been in vain). While we're big believers in digital comics, we think that print still has a place in this world, and we're dedicated to bringing our story to the printed page. We also firmly believe that comics are for everyone, and we think we've created a feisty heroine that male and female readers alike can root for. We just can't get her and her friends out into the world without your help!
Your donations will help us fund our first print run. We're fortunate to have the backing of Alterna Comics, an established publisher of creator-owned comics, so we're in good hands when it comes to planning and producing a professional volume.
Intrigued? Back us with $25 or more to pre-order your print copy of Volume 1!
Risks and challenges
The first five issues of Cannons in the Clouds are already available digitally, and we're only seeking funding for making them available in a collected trade paperback. Since the book is written, drawn, inked, colored and ready for printing, we don't anticipate challenges in bringing this project to completion if we succeed in our fundraising goal. Of course, if any delays related to printing or shipping occur, our backers will be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
