Working Theater is proud to announce our 4th Annual Directors Salon! Salon founders Luke Harlan, Dina Vovsi, and Nicole A. Watson, with the support of Working Theater Producing Artistic Director Mark Plesent and Production Manager Rebecca Martinez, are curating the 4th Annual week-long Directors Salon to support the work of emerging NYC directors. The Salon gives emerging directors the chance to showcase their work, meet with other directors and theater artists, and to hear from leaders in the fields of directing and arts management.
4th Annual Directors Salon SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Monday, June 17 @ 7.00pm
SALON KICK-OFF PARTY
You don't want to miss the annual kick-off party, and here's why: not only do we give away raffle prizes, drink, and celebrate, but this is the night we choose the directors to direct the 7 new plays being presented on Sunday, June 23! All you have to do is show up and put your name in a hat and you could be directing a new play by Tuesday morning!
Tuesday, June 18 @ 7.00pm
DIRECTORS Q&A PANEL
Every year we invite some of New York's busiest directors to take a break from rehearsal and share their experiences with us. Ask them anything. This is a chance for you to get your questions answered about directing in New York.
Wednesday, June 19 @ 7.00pm
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & PRODUCER PANEL
In addition to the Directors Panel, each year we hold a panel with Artistic Directors from theaters around New York City AND with independent theatrical producers. How do theaters choose directors for their plays? What's the best way to "pitch" a new project? Ask all your questions tonight!
Saturday, June 22 @ 7:30pm
PRESENTATION OF DIRECTOR-DRIVEN PROJECTS
One of the most exciting parts of the Salon is our night of director-driven work. We put out a call for submissions and we choose three projects to receive rehearsal space, resources, support, and a public presentation. Join us Saturday to see a brand new project in front of an audience for the first time! The evening ends with a talkback with all the artists, so you can be a part of the process. This year's projects are Pieces by Katherine Brook, The In-Between by Kareem Fahmy, and Untitled Immigration Project by Shana Solomon.
Sunday, June 23 @ 7:30pm
7 NEW PLAYS inspired by WAITING FOR LEFTY, directed by YOU!
The final event of the Salon is the night of brand new plays by some of the most exciting playwrights in New York, and all the directors are chosen out of a hat at the Kick-Off Party and are given rehearsal space and an ensemble of actors to work with. We asked this year's playwrights to write a short play responding to Clifford Odets's Waiting for Lefty. This year's playwrights are: Keith Josef Adkins, Chad Beckim, Michael Lew, Halley Feiffer, Cándido Tirado, Mfoniso Udofia, and Alladin Ullah. YOU could direct their new plays. Just make sure to come to our kick-off party on Monday, June 17th!
Risks and challenges
A central part of the Salon's mission is to provide these opportunities free of charge. In order to fulfill this mission, we are asking for your help! We are passionate about creating a community of directors in New York, and a place where we can come together, network, share work, and exchange ideas and resources. As the past three years of the Salon showed us, this is a service that is desperately needed in the community of emerging directors.
Your support will go directly to fulfilling this mission by:
- Providing space for the festival - we rent the June Havoc Theatre for the week and must also rent additional outside rehearsal space to accomodate our 3 director-driven projects and 7 short plays all rehearsing in the same week.
- Compensating our playwrights, actors, and stage manager
- Covering additional costs such as printing and copying scripts and programs, refreshments for our events, and miscellaneous necessities such as a specific prop or costume.
Thank you so much in advance for your help, and we look forward to seeing you at the Salon!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
