In the past three years, over 70,000 Thoroughbreds have been registered as foals, according to Jockey Club statistics. After their career on the track is over, these horses need to find a second career. The lucky ones find their way into rescues or trail homes. Other lucky smaller ones into polo homes and the taller ones into hunter/jumper/dressage homes. However, the Thoroughbreds standing 15.1 to 15.3 hands tall, the smaller/stockier build Thoroughbreds, seemed to fall through the cracks and a dim future awaited them until the Dreaming of Three's 100 day trainer challenge barrel race (Proceeds from this Event went to CANTER & Bright Futures Farm)!
Since their first Event in August, 2013, there has been more barrel racers looking in the direction of sites like CANTER or Retired Racehorse Training Project at the trainer listings for their next barrel racing prospect, more trainers starting their Thoroughbreds who fit the confirmation of a barrel horse on the barrel pattern instead of merely sending them down the road. If we can continue to demonstrate that an OTTB CAN be their next prospect, we can place more of these beautiful horses into more homes in the future, as they certainly deserve that second chance!
The learning and knowledge that we have, is, at the most, but little compared with that of which we are ignorant.
The X Project with Patrick King Horsemanship is an online program that will follow the transformation of an off-the-track Thoroughbred (Pookie's Princess) directly off the track, through foundation training to barrel racing training for nine months, concluding at the Ultimate X Showdown on September 5, 2014 at the Simmons Equestrian Center. This Kickstart Project will be the first two months of the series. We will start another Kickstart Project for April/May, June/July/August to help us with production costs.
This project is in connection with the Ultimate X Showdown, a training competition coordinated by Dreaming of Three whereas 15 trainers are selected from applications across the U.S., who will select their off-the-track Thoroughbreds themselves to train for 100 days to ultimately come to the Event on September 5, 2014. The Event will highlight the versatility of the OTTB in the Western discipline, especially the sport of barrel racing through a judged Freestyle performance, with Patrick King as one of the members of the judging panel, and then the timed barrel race.
Through The X Project, we hope to show people just how wonderful these horses are for any discipline, and to document her progress and the ease of training.
Please consider helping us to showcase the OTTB’s value and train-ability through this documentary of her transformation. Thoroughbreds make wonderful trail companions, lesson horses, mounted patrol horses, jumping, dressage and barrel racing horses and many other disciplines!
These special horses can be retrained for nearly anything.
Risks and challenges
Some of the challenges with training any horse, are injuries that set back the schedule. We are prepared for this type of issue, but will also cover the best way to deal with such an issue such as lameness, etc., within the series. If Pookie needs to be off work for a couple weeks, it could postpone our schedule.
This is a Project to help people feel more comfortable with acquiring an OTTB. We will be as honest as possible with all the ups and downs of any horse ownership and will demonstrate how to deal with things properly and will continue on with our series.
As long as we have funding to continue filming, we will push forward to show how awesome these horses are for any discipline!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
