Project Update #1: Spinner Buttons...

Posted by Jack Roman (Collaborator)

First off, thank you to everyone who has backed this project so far. Louis and I could not make this project a reality without you. Now that we've met the funding goal, the spinner will get made and we're listening to backers for comments and feedback (or just good jokes).

In that vein, I'd like to discuss the spinner button issue. Short version, a few people have asked for a center recess / divot to help center the button on your finger while spinning the AXIOS. I personally like the simple flat look but who am I to stand in the way of progress?

Here's a model of what I think will work:

The recess is .250" with a .125" fillet rounding out the inside edge. This should be a pretty good size and feel good in the hand. We're only looking at making this .100" deep since we've got the internal 4-40 threads to leave space for but I think that should do it.

I did look at other options such as a fully conical top face but we're running OP2 on the mill (single spindle lathe and no good way to hold the button for backside turning) and that would require 3D milling, which is going to take time and leave scallops. I think the center button recess is the cleaner option. A flat recess with chamfered edges would look cool but I don't believe it would feel nearly as nice in the hand so.. this is probably the way we're going.

Check it out and let me know what you guys think.

I was one of the people who pushed concave buttons, but if it's a choice between the divot and the original flat buttons, I think I'd prefer the flat also. But I'll take the divot if that's the only choice, of course.

Dave, since the project hasn't exploded and the production numbers are reasonable, we might be able to let people chose which button they want. No promises just yet but I don't think it should be a problem.

I'd prefer the clean button as promoted throughout the Kickstarter appeal until now. If various options are easy to produce then at time of order perhaps people could choose? My support remains either way. Just casting my vote.

I'm in favor of the balance point divot.

If you wanted to come back later with a follow-on product, you could make divot adapters (or one divot, one-bump hub pairs) designed for stacking.
