Dear friends, family, and future friends:
YES, we are making a short film!
We would like your support in undertaking this utopian adventure! We are shooting this October, but we need your help to make it great.
Inspired by my last six years in the middle of the country, I (Polina Malikin) have written a script that portrays the inner lives of two girls as they navigate growing up in a small Midwestern town. I am excited to direct my first narrative after a decade of experimental and documentary filmmaking. I am fortunate to be working with a very talented group of people, including Andrew Droz Palermo (White Rabbits: Percussion Gun; Faced Fixed), who will be the director of photography, and the Powell brothers (The Believers), who will compose and perform original music.
Right now, I'm funding this project out of my own pocket, but my pockets aren't deep. Your contribution would go directly toward paying for better equipment, small stipends for the all-volunteer professional crew, and distribution costs. All told, the money raised will translate into a better film that will be seen by more folks - and something that you can be proud to be a part of. Plus, there are great "prizes" to show our gratitude.
As you may know, I’ve been making experimental and documentary shorts for the past decade. And now I want to try my hand at something more narrative – though still poetic and experimental. Your contribution would not only be an investment in me but also a vote for more women directors, who remain greatly underrepresented in the world of fiction filmmaking.
With your support, I am emboldened to undertake this daunting project. I appreciate anything you choose to contribute.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
RIDE will be a short narrative film (about 15-20 minutes) that follows the relationship that develops between two cousins as they are forced to spend a summer together in a small Midwestern town. The older cousin (16 years old) is trying to figure out the oncoming realities of adulthood; the younger one (8 years old) is wary of a looming adolescence. Both girls are on the verge of transformation - which is exciting, painful, and beautiful. In the film, I will try to capture the precious and scary nature of change - from child to adolescent, and from teenager to adult. The plot is simple: the older cousin earns enough money to buy a car and must reconcile herself (and her younger, adoring cousin) with her new-found freedom. The film will be shot with a documentary-style approach and will use non-professional actors who "play themselves" for the most part.
Nope. I threw together this animation just for the Kickstarter campaign. Our film is all live action and nothing like the video above!
The music is courtesy of our house band, composed of the Malikin-Sturtz family members.
