For my senior thesis at Grand Valley, I want to put together a collection of images that represent my passion for fashion photography as well as my background in environmental science. This involves creating fashion scenes that incorporate the leading source of water pollution in West Michigan (stormwater). This creative endeavor involves a multitude of resources - primarily making it "rain" and have colored water come from the sides and underneath to give the feel of a storm that slowly takes over the model's clean, pristine stature.
I'm raising money to pull this off in a way that looks classy and well done. I need to be able to pay for make-up artists, hairstylists, and models. I need at least 3 assistants at every shoot - and with everyone's schedules, they aren't willing to come for free. Money is also required to gain a well-selected wardrobe from local thrift shops and garage sales, as well as a paint sprayer for a rain effect, and the color dyes/paint supplies. The process will entail a lot of photo paper costs for tests and further development. In the end, the funding will be necessary to buy supplies to print and stretch the selected exhibition images on canvas large enough to be eye-catching and professionally executed.
I am a 22-year-old photography major at GVSU. My dream is to be a fashion photographer for magazines such as Vogue and W. Feel free to see other work I've done at www.facebook.com/akahephotography. If you like it, please "Like" my page!
WHAT TO DO
Please donate and spread the word! Help me explore the fashion/environmental possibilities to create something representative of my 4.5 years at college and that will benefit my future career as a fashion photographer!
Risks and challenges
As we continue on toward winter, my main challenge will be weather-related. Models have been getting in the river water and freezing - and it has been somewhat warm still. To get through this, I'm trying to shoot early and often. I am also picking models that are tough enough to handle the cold for a long enough time period.
Time constraints will also make this project quite the challenge. I have many other classes and jobs going on during the semester. However, I always find myself taking the time to upload pictures, even if it is 3am - I just have to see what I shot that day. I know that regardless of time, I have to have something to show at various times throughout the semester, and in the end produce a set of 20+ images. The pressure of putting these pictures in front of the entire faculty, school, family, and friends, as well as using this as my portfolio to kickstart my career after graduation in December, will make sure that I have them done in time and will be representative of my best work.
