Football Universe is a football manager where you can use your squad stored in a public blockchain on a 2d simulator.
Football Universe is a blockchain-based football manager videogame. You can buy and sell digital players using cryptocurrency on a web application, make them play matches against other users and compete in tournaments on a 2D style simulator.
It combines the idea of owning player cards in the same way the Ultimate Mode of FIFA does with a football manager experience where you are in charge of choosing a starting eleven and give team and player instructions (See more in the influences section).
Besides the novel idea, another important innovation in Football Universe is the use of Blockchain Technology to enable the manager to indeed legally own football digital players. This fact makes all the difference because the players you buy will never lose their value as they are never resetted, in contrast with what happens in the FIFA series, where you have to spend money every year to make a new team.
At first, it is relevant to manifest Football Universe influences in order to provide a better understanding of the experience we want our players to live. All of thoses are games of remarkable popularity and economic success.
FIFA, also known as FIFA Football, is a series of video games or football simulators, which Electronic Arts publishes annually under the EA Sports brand.
FIFA Ultimate Team is an online mode included in FIFA in which you can create the team of your dreams without any limitations apart from the ability to win coins. In FIFA Ultimate Team every player of every team in each league will be found as a card, and based on its quality the cards will be bronze, silver or gold. Every card will provide values for the attributes EA has given to the player and set up an overall score.
When you start the mode you will have a squad made up of bronze players, the idea is to improve it by getting better players to form a squad of guarantees. In order to improve the team, it will be necessary to obtain coins that will be invested in the purchase of card packs, in which players and other types of cards will be obtained, or to go to the transfer market where users buy and sell players.
Football Manager is a series of football management simulation video games developed by Sports Interactive and published by Sega.
You take on the role of a club manager, overseeing player transfers, tactics on the field, staff instructions and everything in between, in an attempt to bring your club to the edge of glory. Part tactics, part strategy game, part financial director and part headhunter.
The default attack tactics will probably increase the goals, but you run with the risk of leaving your defense exposed and often you will lose possession. If you try to play a controlled, possession-based game, you may not be able to break the defenses and leave yourself vulnerable to a counterattack. In addition to those macro-level strategies, there are more specific instructions that must be executed within those systems, such as playing wide or tight, closing or withdrawing opponents, or making shorter or more direct passes.
In addition, you can give instructions to individual players rather than the entire team, adjusting what they do with or without the ball, what part of the field they occupy in an attempt to emphasize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. It's easy to over-complicate your strategy and issue contradictory orders if you don't think about how the parts fit into the whole. The devil is in the details, and Football Manager really appreciates the details.
CryptoKitties is a virtual game based on blockchain and developed by Axiom Zen. It allows players to buy, collect, breed and sell various type of virtual cats. It represents one of the first attempts to deploy blockchain technology for recreational and leisure purposes. The popularity of the game in December 2017 shaked up the Ethereum network, causing it to reach an all-time high in transactions and slow execution.
On March 20, 2018, it was announced that CryptoKitties would split into its own company and raise $12 million from several major venture capital firms and angel investors. The investment rounds were led by New York-based Union Square Ventures and San Francisco-based Andreessen Horowitz.
Every Cryptokitty is unique and user-owned, validated through the blockchain, and its value can be appreciated or depreciated depending on the market. Cryptokitties cannot be replicated and cannot be transfered without the permission of the user, even by the game developers. Users can interact with their Cryptokitties, having the ability to buy, sell and breed them.
Buy and sell players
In the website there will be a list of transferable players from other users, as well as players that from time to time will be generated procedurally. The number of players generated daily will depend on a formula that relates the number of digital players without a team to the number of active users in Football Universe. In the same way, you can put your own players on the list so that other users can bid for them.
Play matches against other users
Managers will be able to play football matches against other users through:
- Friendly matches: The matchmaking system will search for same level rivals and no results records will be considered for the qualifying league.
- Qualifying League: official Football Universe mode. After playing 10 matches against same level rivals, the club will be promoted, stay in the division or be relegated.
- User Custom Tournaments: tournaments created by users where they decide who can participate, the commission to be paid and the distribution of the prizes.
Choose tactics and the starting eleven of the matches
Before starting a match,managers will choose the starting eleven and the position on the field that will occupy each player. The more funding we obtain, the more tactics we are going to be able to implement (See more in the Stretch Goals section). The initial available tactics are the next:
Give general instructions to the team
Users will be able to add tactical hints giving general instructions to the team. Teams with identical formations may behave differently on the field. - To provide an offensive or defensive mentality to the team (Containment, Defensive, Counter Attack, Standard, Control, Offensive, Overload)
- Width (5 levels)
- Defensive line (5 levels)
- Tackle aggressiveness (2 levels)
Give individualized instructions to the players
Finally, each player will have unique skills and it will be the managers responsability to figure out what individual instructions might help building a better game. Again, the more funding we obtain, the more tactics we are going to be able to implement (See more in the Stretch Goals section). The initial individual instructions available are the following:
- Choosing among the different roles available for each position
- Marking a specific player
- Dribbling tendency (3 levels)
- Shooting tendency (3 levels)
- Risk in the passes (3 levels)
- Football Universe uses the latest technology: Blockchain, which seems to be consolidating itself (See more in the Technical Preview section). The combination of using a technology destined to change the manner in which the world works and the absence of video games that use it, raises the potential of Football Universe.
- It combines verified cultural facts such as being based on a football game, the successes generated annually by FIFA's Ultimate Team mode and the advanced Football Manager simulation with the novelty that players are going to be cryptoassets in possession of their users forever. This means that a different version of the same game will not be released every year, having to pay again for its acquisition and the purchase of players.
- The monetization model has the potential to generate a high number of daily incomes and maintained over time. The company will earn money by getting a small fee in each transaction.
- It creates an ecosystem in which the players located in the Ethereum Blockchain, will be accessible by other games and DApps and therefore, Football Universe players will be more useful than players belonging to games such as FIFA (See more in the Ecosystem section).
Due to the state-of-the-art technology used in Football Universe, in the next section we will explain as summarized as it can be, some technical details.
We are neither at the beginning of 2009 when bitcoin introduced blockchain technology, nor in 2013, when the first sketches of what was to be Ethereum Platform came to light. In 2019 this technology is mature enough to jump into the real economy. It takes just a minute to do a little bit of research on the internet and find how all the world's largest companies are investing huge amounts of money to position themselves at the forefront of its adoption. The blockchain technology is already here.
Basically, Blockchain Technology allows digital information to be distributed. The information is constantly reconciled into the database, which is stored in multiple locations and updated instantly and the records are public and verifiable. The most interesting thing about blockchain is that it can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value. What is known as cryptoassets.
The players of Football Universe are technically cryptoassets, specifically crypto-collectibles. A crypto-collectible is a cryptographically unique, non-fungible digital asset. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which require all tokens to be identical, each crypto-collectible token is unique or limited in quantity.
Football Universe will use Ethereum Platform. It enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications in the Ethereum public blockchain. Like we said before, the decentralization of our game means that the players you own will legally be yours forever. Our company is not going to have control over your digital players.
Blockchain technology allow Football Universe to transfer digital assets and works with cryptocurrencies. A cryptocurrency is a digital asset designed to work as an exchange medium that uses strong cryptography to secure financial transactions, control the creation of additional units, and verify the transfer of assets. Cryptocurrencies use decentralized control as opposed to centralized digital currency and central banking systems.
As can be seen in Gartner's report, the hype of the cryptocurrencies has come to an end and this year enters a period of consolidation and social acceptance.
However, we are aware that there are many people who have not yet had the opportunity to use a virtual currency. Therefore, we are committed to making a serie of video tutorials to educate those who need it in its use. We want to be your vehicle in this exciting digital pilgrimage that inevitably, society will be forced to undertake for the adoption of such a technology.
As you can see in the illustration, Football Universe is composed of 3 different components.
- The Smart Contract in the Ethereum Blockchain (Back-End),
- Football Universe Decentralized Application (FUdapp), which is the web application that interacts with the smart contract to manage and display the players in the blockchain (Front-End).
- The games and applications that can openly connect to the smart contract to use the cryptoplayers. In our case, Football Universe Simulator (FUSim).
The smart contract is coded in Solidity Language and it is the pillar of Football Universe. It is where the cryptoplayers are randomly created and stored.
FUSim is a simulator made with Unity and programmed in C#. It extracts the cryptoplayers data from the smart contract so that users can play football matches with their own squad made in FUdapp against other users. Next you can see an early developed prototype to show you an approximate idea of the 2D simulator concept.
The reason for separating FUdapp and the FUSim simulator is deeply related with the wide range of possibilities that blockchain technology enables. It is intended that not only our game is going to access the cryptoplayers of our smart contract, but also other external developers will do it by creating games and applications that can reach the cryptoplayers, so that they become a kind of standard football digital players in the blockchain.
For instance, this means that external developers will be able to build their own market transfer web application or make our digital players usable in their video games or applications. This is so because of the decentralized nature of the cryptoassets.
Thus we have created a 2D simulator football manager, but another developer can create a FIFA alike 3D playable simulator that is played with our digital players. Which would benefit us because it would increase the utility and quantity of our designed players transfers. Therefore, users will potentially be able to play games such as FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, Football Manager, Top Eleven, FIFA Street... with the players purchased in our web application.
Due to the great flexibility that kickstarter brings, depending on how the process goes what it is explained next can undergo changes. For example, if we get more funding than the requested quantity, more people will be incorporated into the project and extensions or modifications will be studied to those set out in the next sections.
There are three things that mainly unite us as a team. The first is the deep belief that in the modern world, it is vital to put the spotlight far beyond our borders. We are pro-european and pro-world and we desire to make a video game that reaches every part of the planet. The second is that we all have ties with the Basque Country (Spain), which until now has helped us in communication tasks thanks to the physical and cultural closeness. Finally, the five of us are firmly convinced that with effort and illusion everything can be achieved. We will never give up trying to achieve our dreams.
We would like to say that we are not part of any huge company, nor have we contacted any private investor at the moment. We are a team of enthusiastic professionals with great ambition who are eager to innovate in the world of video games.
After one year developing the idea, we think the time has come to put our hands in the dough and take this first step to achieve our goals, which specifically is to do a job of high quality. Maybe we don't have huge past projects to show, but when it comes to excitement nobody can beat us.
To this end, we want a strong union with the community of Kickstarter. We don't only want you to help us financially but to actively participate in the development of the videogame. That's why, if we reach the goal, after setting up the social networks, the first thing we will do is to introduce sections on the web where backers and development team can feel very close.

We choose Kickstarter to allow our team to have a high level of flexibility and room to breath. To really give us the opportunity to create exactly what we want. Crowdfunding also allows us to connect directly with the people that has helped in our success. We need your voice to help us grow this community, and to keep us close to those who matter most, the players.
Having the opportunity to work together with this community make us feel very excited because we believe that the mutual benefit can be great. Crowd-sourced fundraising sites like Kickstarter have been an incredible boom to the independent development community. They democratize the process by allowing consumers to support the games they want to see developed and give the developers the freedom to experiment, take risks, and design without anyone else compromising their vision.
Finally, it helps us to go step by step. Keeping the scale of the project small accomplishes two things. First and foremost, Football Universe gets to make the game we want to make, promote it in whatever manner we deem appropriate, and release the finished product on our own terms. Secondly, there’s an unprecedented opportunity to show the public what game development of this caliber looks like from the inside.
There is no point in trying to reach the moon if we don't have the means. And neither should we not be ambitious enough to dream that the videogame can become a success. To face the above we believe that the best option is to take steps not too big, but in an organized and solid manner.
Taking this into account, our estimates are that we need a minimum of 30000 euros. Which is basically needed for:
- paying the people involved in the project so they can work on it without worries for a year.
- pay the expenses we are going to incur by buying software licenses, developing rewards, paying taxes, etc.
We are committed to reach our goal, which is the development of an enjoyable alpha version of the video game. We believe that we have to start with well-established pillars, and then progress hand to hand with the Kickstarter community. These well-established pillars are briefly described next:
Smart Contract Development
In order to be able to buy and sell digital players, as well as to use them in matches, the first action is to have the procedural generation of digital players working in the blockchain. In order to do this, it is first necessary to design players' structure (skills, nationalities, graphic design, etc) and second to upload the code to the Ethereum Blockchain. Before doing so, the code will be audited by a specialized company.
Web Application Development
Once the digital players exist in the blockchain, it is time to build a team by buying and selling players through the web application. For this purpose, the web application is going to be developed, along with the design of the cards representing each of the digital players.
Finally, when we are in possession of 11 players, we will be able to use them strategically to win matches against other users in a 2D style simulator. This is the most complex component and on which efforts will be focused to have a complete and enjoyable version by September of 2020.
Although we have described the development of the components as something that has to be done in a linear way, the reality is that thanks to the budget requested, the three components will be carried out at the same time.
We will document the creative process releasing monthly posts in our blog and we will exclusively chat weekly with our Kickstarter backers. This will strive to make the backers as much a part of the process as possible by showing a game grow from start to finish, with all the passion, humor, and heartbreak that happens along the way. We are committed to total transparency with this project, ensuring it is one of the most honest depictions of game development ever conceived.
There will be a private online community set up for the backers to discuss the project with the devs and submit their thoughts and feelings about the game's content and direction, sometimes even voting on decisions when the dev team can't decide. Backers will also have access to help test the game once a alpha version is available.
Although the initial development objectives have been described in the previous section, the more funding we obtain, the more ambitious the team will be in terms of the scope of the project. Below is an example of some of the extra features we’ll be able to fulfil by reaching stretch funding goals:
The initial languages of Football Universe will be Spanish, English and French, as they are the languages natively spoken by the team members. However, we are totally involved in positioning Football Universe as a video game with a global player base. In order to achieve this goal, it is a priority to initially translate the game into the most spoken languages in the world.
Expanded music and sound effects
Although music is not traditionally part of the core of football manager's video games, once we reach this funding goal we will notably improve the musical quality of the Football Universe menus as well as the sound effects during the matches to foster the feeling that the managers are really on the playing field.

Although the realization of a 3D simulator is not going to improve the strategic sense of Football Universe, the more money we get, the more we can get close to the high technical level in which are positioned other video games in the sector. This will give cache to the videogame and attract more users.
New mode: 3D playable simulator
More funding means more tools to expand our video game. Once we complete the objectives aimed, efforts will be directed towards the creation of new ways of using our digital players.
Football Universe is not a game of collecting cards from real football players. However, we understand that the possibility of offering limited editions of real players with wide international influence can be enjoyable.
It is impossible to express to you the deep gratitude we feel for contributing to the financing of Football Universe. However, we will try. Here is a summary of the rewards you will get depending on the tier you have chosen.

Bronze Card Pack: No great feat is accomplished in one day. This pack will give you the tools to get as far as you want. It is made up of 1 silver player and 10 bronze players and all positions will be placed.

Gold Card Pack: Becoming a world champion requires world-class players. This pack is made up of 1 gold players, 4 silver players, and 6 bronze players and all positions will be placed. Please remember that this pack does not include the previous card packs.
Legend Card Pack: Establish a hegemony to be remembered through the ages. This pack is made up of 4 gold players, 4 silver players and 3 bronze players and all positions will be placed. Please remember that this pack does not include the previous card packs

Right to participate in polls: Because there's nothing cuter than watching a creature grow up since it's little. This pack gives you the right to decide part of Football Universe's fate through a section of the web application. At least, one poll will be conducted monthly to know your opinions.
Access to the alpha version: Experience makes the master. Start designing and experiencing with strategies from the first day Football Universe is available and don't give your opponents a chance to win the match. Although classification will be resetted once the alpha version has been tested, the managers with the best results will be rewarded with special avatars and other kind of graphical resources.
Backer's Special Avatars: Exhibit community love. It contains special avatars so that once Football Universe achieves success, you can presume that you contributed greatly to it.
Name and phrase in the website: There will be a section in the website where your name will pass to posterity, along with a phrase that you choose. Think carefully about what message you want to pass on to future generations!
Direct communication with the development team: Be a part of something bigger. We will give you direct communication via a private section of the website with the development team. We do not only want to receivey our suggestions via messages. We will enable a chat and we will do a meeting every two weeks to have you updated and received feedback.
Strategy digital guide: Sometimes the road to success is also the shortest. We will send you a guide with advice and suggestions both to move with ease in the transfer market, and to use the tactics that can probably do the most damage to the opponent in the match.
Art digital book: We all have an artist inside of us. Let yourself be taken in by the beauty of our art director's digital traces and receive at home a digital copy of all his sketches made so far with their respective annotations.
Be in the game as a personalized gold player: Immortality is possible. Recreate yourself as a gold player within Football Universe. Tell us your name, position and skills, and along with a photo of yourself, you will be designed and integrated into the blockchain for the rest of eternity.
Risks and challenges
It would not be honest to say that blockchain technology is ready to be applied 100% in the business world, mainly due to the lack of standardization and the well-known problems of escalation. Both issues mean that every strategic decision has to taken in a very conscious way. For example, we have chosen Ethereum as our blockchain platform, but we cannot be sure that in the future, It will be still the best solution for us. In our favour we have that history tells us that new digital technologies have always triumphed first in certain sectors, one precisely that of video games.
Another related challenge, although very different in practice, is the perception of danger that users may feel regarding the use of cryptocurrencies. And we say very different because at present the danger is small and with the aim of reducing it to 0, as described above we will hire an audit service to ensure that in the code that we upload to the blockchain, there is not a single bug that can be used against our users.
Slightly changing the subject, although we naturally accept the expectations that may be formed about us; to affirm that our objective is to become the Football Manager of the blockchain, gives us a feeling of responsibility difficult to assimilate. And not only because of the fantastic work done by SEGA in the last decade with Football Manager, but also because we understand that the illusion that users can feel for us to succeed can easily turn into anger if we don't fulfill our proposed objectives.
Finally, without a doubt, the most important challenge is to involve the community in the development of Football Universe. We have been working on this idea for almost a year now and we have our vision of how it should go forward but it is to be assumed that users will eventually form their own vision. How exactly do you ask for and integrate fan feedback and contributions while keeping a project like this on track in terms of vision, scope, and schedule?
