A refined approach to Virtual Reality! Introducing the first adjustable VR lens that caters to the individual’s visual comfort.
About this project
Hello! My name is James Kim, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of NOONBiT Inc., and the creator of our product, the Nunulo VR.
As an avid Virtual Reality device user, I enjoy the visual features that the standard devices offer, but have come across problems upon using devices that are currently in the market.
After prolonged periods of time using a VR device, I continuously experienced headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Due to my background as an optometrist, I wanted to find a productive solution for this problem by tackling it from an optometry perspective.
This sparked my desire to create our product, the Nunulo VR: specially designed VR-dedicated lenses that come equipped with an easy-to-use cardboard device.
I designed this product to combat the issues that I, as well as other VR users, have experienced. "Nunulo" means "through the eyes" in Korean, and our product is distinct, as it incorporates a lens that prioritizes the comfort, satisfaction, and well-being of our users and their eyes.
The Nunulo VR lens counters and significantly reduces the negative side effects that come with traditional VR devices, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea.
With this product, we hope to offer each user a seamless VR experience.
It’s no surprise that every individual has a distinct eye shape and a particular eyesight.
Slight changes in VR devices may cause severe image distortion and double vision. For those wearing glasses, this phenomenon can lead to dizziness, nausea and headaches because the eyes are constantly trying to adapt to the unclear image.
In order to obtain a clear image of an object at extremely close distances, users have to see the object through a convex lens.
However, one type of convex lens cannot meet all different optical conditions. Conventional convex lenses, which are used by most head-mount devices, have a balanced and identical thickness all around the lens.
Yet, our lens, called the "imbalanced convex lens", has a carefully calculated and distributed thickness. Therefore, it has the ability to be precisely adjusted to every individual’s distinct visual circumstance.
Our innovative patent-pending lens strives to protect the eyes of users without sacrificing the quality of the VR experience.
Our lens technology has incorporated three methods of enhancing the clarity of the VR content for users.
- Imbalanced Convex Lens:
The lens is designed with a carefully calculated distribution all around the lens, so that when users rotate the lens frame, they are able to find which part of the lens is the best fit for their eyesight.
- Focal Length Adjustments:
When users turn the lens frame, they are able to move the lens back and forth to find the exact focal point that matches their vision.
- Interpupillary Distance Adjustments:
By shifting the lens left and right, users can adjust the distance between their eyes in order to eliminate any instances of double vision.
The Nunulo VR wide-angle lens has a multi-coating with an anti-reflective function and offers a high resolution image. The lens is designed to give users a more vivid sense of the space and field of view when immersed in the virtual reality content.
Our special lens frame is compatible with any of our other lenses that we have produced or are currently in development. We have created and are working on other types of lenses with more advanced functions, such as fog prevention, electromagnetic wave blocking features, and more. These additional optional lenses will be available for purchase on our website near the end of the 2016 year!
All of the provided lens adjustments work to benefit each individual’s specific eye shape and vision. Most VR head-mount devices offer minimal adjustments and do not take varying eye conditions into consideration.
The Nunulo VR allows the users to easily adjust the VR lens for a clearer and more transparent simulation of reality, as our users can simply turn the lens frame to find their “sweet spot”.
VR content is on its way to becoming more universal, and therefore, there needs to be a device that is able to cater to the varying visual standards.
Here’s a video of individuals trying our innovative lens through our cardboard device for the first time. Those who have experienced our model have expressed positive feedback about its functionality and its features.
The Nunulo VR supports smartphones with display sizes between 4.0 and 6.0 inches and is compatible with any standard VR content.
When I came across the idea for this product in 2013, I left my job as an optometrist and dedicated my full attention to designing and developing this innovative VR product.
I knew I was following my passion, and it was the first time I truly felt compelled to bring my own idea into the market.
Over the past couple of years, I have been an eager follower of Kickstarter campaigns and emerging technologies. When I think of the bigger picture pertaining to my product, I know that the best and quickest way to spread the Nunulo VR device is through Kickstarter.
I genuinely want more people to have access to the device because I
know they will be offered a pleasant virtual reality experience with this product's
lens.
Kickstarter will give me the needed financial support in order to mass produce this device to supply to consumers and supporters. With adequate funding, I will continue the development of more advanced models of both the lenses and display devices.

The lenses used in VR devices are generally plastic convex lenses with low refraction. VR companies use these lenses because they are less expensive. However, these lenses can harm the users’ eyes since the refraction is applied to every eye identically without much consideration for unique eye conditions or visual circumstances. The quality of traditional VR lenses is not even comparable to that of regular glasses.
Yet, the Nunulo VR lenses are designed to maximize the three-dimensional effects of virtual reality by enhancing the sense of space. They are different from conventional convex lenses because the Nunulo VR lenses magnify close-range displays to generate a full and holistic view. Most VR devices need a SDK (Software Development Kit) for users to watch VR content. With the Nunulo VR lenses, users can enjoy VR content with an image that is clearer than that of most VR devices in the market. The Nunulo VR lenses are designed to adjust to the vision of users, so that they can view clear content in extremely close distances for prolonged periods of time because they significantly reduce side effects, such as headaches or nausea. -
Conventional VR lenses are tailored to the display or image. The Nunulo VR lenses are designed and tailored to each user’s eye condition. Through simple adjustments, such as shifting and rotating, users can obtain a clear and sharp picture.
-
Our device and lenses can adapt any smartphone with screen sizes between 4 to 6 inches. Larger screens around 5.5 to 6 inches may offer content that appears more realistic.
-
The Nunulo VR lenses can be adjusted to the eye conditions of those who have poor vision. However, for those who have severe visual impairments, such as myopia, amblyopia, anisopia and aniseikonia, our additional advanced lenses may suit their conditions better. These lenses will be available on our website in the future.
-
Most VR devices can be harmful to the eyes of children. However, the Nunulo VR lenses will reduce the risk factors for children because our lenses offers adjustments for the continuously changing eye conditions of children. However, we generally recommend that children do not use the device for more than 10 minutes at a time, and we recommend that they are supervised by an adult.
-
Oculus has a display embedded into their unit. It also has software to optimize the picture quality of VR content, and they use fresnel lenses. The Nunulo VR lenses provide a realistic and wide field of view, similar to the Oculus VR device. The thing is, the Nunulo VR does not need a SDK (Software Developer Kit). Our lenses are uniquely developed and designed from an optometry perspective, and we use top quality materials for our multi-coated lenses.
-
Yes. With the Nunulo VR, users will experience better quality images and VR content.

Google is selling a cardboard VR device through its open platform. Although our product is also made of cardboard and is compatible to smartphone VR content, our design and approach are completely different from that of Google’s. Our lenses offer enhanced clarity, and they are adjustable to each user’s visual acuity. We prioritize each user’s visual wellbeing and comfort. Our cardboard device only fits the Nunulo VR lenses.

We have been working on the Nunulo VR for more than 3 years. As soon as the campaign is over, we will expedite the manufacturing in large volumes. The funding from Kickstarter will help us in the development of more advanced forms of our lenses. We genuinely hope that the spread of our product will lead to the growth of VR and will allow mass amounts of people enjoy VR content more comfortably.
