RaspiTab – the fist RaspberryPi-powered tablet! Raspitab is a hackable Linux tablet with a Raspberry Pi at its heart. It's designed to open easily and offers extra internal space for adding your own hardware…

Most tablets just aren't hackable. Devices like iPads or others powered by Android all about software services. You can buy music, rent movies or download new levels for your games. But nothing more.

While could develop new software for your iOS or Android tablet, you can't add cool new features to the device or change the hardware in any way. While iOS and Android both use open source software, neither are truly open source.

Raspitab is the answer. As well as being a brilliant tablet in its own right, it's designed to be entirely open and hackable. If you've got an idea, you can add it to the RaspiTab. With lots of extra internal space for add-ons and components you're free to make all your ideas a reality. Install anything and create anything – it's up to you!

With RaspiTab, any newly added software or hardware are developed and added to the RaspiTab. You no longer have to be locked by the “PLAY” store. You can now let you community or customer, free of charge, download the software. RaspiTabs internal space for new hardware made by you, adds freedom to take RaspiTab to a whole new level. With your own hardware and software you will be able to get RaspiTab anywhere to enjoy your content.

Pick from one of four colours (or just have all four!)

Because the RaspiTab is powered by the Raspberry Pi Compute Module, it uses very little power and doesn't need noisy fans. It's cool and quiet to use making it perfect for home, the office or as a development tool.

Thanks to the Compute Module, the RaspiTab is powered by the same open source software as a Raspberry Pi. You could connect a USB mouse and keyboard to create a very capable Linux-based PC – how you use it is up to you!

The case development process

RaspiTab – made for hacking!
Develop your own software, add you own hardware to make your own RaspiTab!

What is RaspiTab?

RaspiTab is a 100% hackable 7” tablet with a capacitive touch screen. Add your own sensors and develop software for it without ruining the clean lines of the chassis. Want to get hands on with the hardware? It's only four screws away – the Raspitab is designed to be taken apart!

With two internal USBs, a 26 pin GPIO header and ample room for prototyping, your ideas can develop into entirely new products with the help of Raspitab.

If you can dream it, you can make it with Raspitab!.

Spacious internal design means you can add new sensors and components with ease

Its up to you!

Say cheese!

RaspiTab also comes with the Raspberry Pi's popular 5 megapixel camera module. Take photos, make videos or use any community software or code designed to take advantage of this amazing add-on.

Hardware

The hardware backbone

We've got the PCB layout down, but this is only a prototype. We'll be updating this to the latest design during the next two to three weeks. You can follow the progress of our design as we go and help us make the Raspberry Pi-powered tablet you want!

The 2 add-on PCB are an OPTION!

Software

We have already integrated the camera with the operating system, but we need to create drivers for the RaspiTab's 7” TFT screen. We are currently hard at work creating a video showing the Raspitab running with an on-screen touch keyboard, so watch this space!

Production Schedule

Hardware projects can sometimes take longer than planned, but we're actually a few months ahead of our initial schedule. Things will likely get trickier as we push on, so we've created this conservative schedule:

October / November 2014: Finalizing design and construction of the hardware layout

December 2014: Product tests, certification and finding fulfilment partner. Start tooling for plastic injection moulding, create batches of electronics.

January – March 2015: Start production of the final version

April 2015: Start shipping the first RaspiTab's to our earliest backers!

Risks and challenges

RISKS AND CHALLENGES

HARDWARE
We have done it before, so we can do it again!

The schematics for the prototype are being reviewed as we speak and the final PCB layout has started and we expect the first units to be ready for testing within two weeks.

Experience tell us that the power chain will need rigorous testing to insure that they can handle maximum load. Once the power supply has been tested we'll be ready for the next phase – testing with Raspberry Pi Compute Module.

While we're using a lot from the standard Board Support Package (BSP) we need to write a driver for our 7” TFT screen, as well as implement the power management circuit.

One of the toughest parts of the process is ensuring our hardware is fully compliant with the relevant standards for sale (CE for Europe, FCC for America and others). We only use FCC approved components in the RaspiTab.

1) Getting the design and construction ready for production
Everything needs to fit together perfectly and it's no small task. Luckily we have the construction expertise of one of China's leading plastics manufacturers behind us, as well as design expertise from ex-Nokia industrial designers Martin & Michael.

2) Cramming lots of electronics into such a small space
We already have a functioning prototype with all the components in place. Right now we are finishing the wiring to send the first batch of PCBs to manufacturing. We have two very experienced embedded platform engineers on our team to make this happen. They have developed several ARM and Coretex platforms before this project.

3) Setting up a logistics and quality assured manufacturing chain
During every step of production, our manufacturers need strict guidelines and tests in place to ensure every RaspiTab leaves the factory in perfect working order. Henrik Warrer has a proven track record in this field.

4) Developing and debugging driver software
There's a big difference between using a Raspberry Pi Model B+ compared to making an I/O board for the Compute Module. Luckily, our team has years of experience building both hardware and the firmware needed to create quality embedded products.

We are 100% committed to getting the RaspiTab into the market and we have all the skills and expertise needed to make it happen. With the help from the Kickstarter community we can have the resources to make the RaspiTab a reality, so pledge today!

The funding will be used for plastic tooling costs.
