"Fight - specific Isola.
Art, Architecture, Activism and the Future of the City."
A book edited by Isola Art Center, published by Archive Books, Berlin.
The Tale and its Book
Not long ago, Isola was a former industrial site and part of Milan’s “green lung,” one of these rare areas in the city that contains parks and gardens. The population there grew to become very diverse, including multi-cultural groups, working and upper-middle class people, craftsmen, merchants, artists and intellectuals. And of course a few criminals as well.
However, Isola, meaning island in Italian, saw recent urban development by business interests that had little concern for the needs of the local community. As a response, artists, curators, philosophers and activists around the world decided to create and experiment with innovative strategies for alternative urban transformation over the last ten years with the Isola Art Center. They did not prevent, unfortunately, the city of Milan from demolishing “La Stecca degli Artigiani” and its surrounding parks, the place they all gathered. In its place, major construction projects by Italian and American corporations are being built to take advantage of the real estate boom expected by the Expo 2015.
Please join us in the fight!
We are creating a book to document the stories of the communities living in Isola and all the people who joined them. Their daily life unites them in their struggles with big and small actions as well as their visions, desires and dreams. More than their local experience though, the book will also present thoughts and experiences, conclusions and ideas for innovative development strategies by artists and writers, sociologists and philosophers, architects and urban planners, who have shared our adventure.
And we want this book to be produced and distributed the same way it was made: in a collective effort to share our concern and passion.
Our project is supported by the help of the following organizations: the Casino Luxembourg; Forum d’art contemporain, Luxembourg; the FfAI - Foundation for Arts Initiatives, New York; Fonds culturel national, Luxembourg; Frigoriferi Milanesi, Milan; Gallery Bianconi, Milan; LaRete Art Projects, Modena; Mamco, Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva; Mudam - Musée d’art moderne, Luxembourg; and the Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven.
...And of course by the artists who donated their works as benefits for our Kickstarter project!
Why should you support us?
Just as in Isola, gentrification has occurred around the world over the last decade. We believe we need to raise awareness and encourage people to join forces with like-minded people to fight for a quality of life that is not induced by the social engineering of big corporations. We want you to help us make this history and these experiences.
Please join us in our cause! No gift is too small!
What you get!
In return for your support, we have arranged some wonderful perks, all following an Island theme. All of the perks were created by artisans or artists who are involved with the fight for Isola. They want you to be involved too and have generously donated their time and materials to make these objects, designs and works of art special and unique. Just for you! How will the money be used? We already have a publisher! We already have the story! We’ve already had an exhibit to raise awareness! We already have an amazing group of supporters! But we need $5,500 for the printing and distribution costs for two versions of the book in English and Italian.
We want book to be as affordable as possible so that as many people around the world can share this experience and learn about the issues of gentrification. By supporting our campaign, we will not have to pass the costs of production onto our readers. Every little bit helps!

Risks and challenges
All of us have worked on this project in parallel with other commitments, as it is with any independently produced work. As a result, we may encounter delays, specifically on translations or contributions of others that may take longer than anticipated. We have postponed the release of this campaign twice, but finally we are here due to the energy and conviction of many people. We thank everyone for their contributions and we thank all of you for contributing to our Kickstarter campaign. With your support our risks and challenges will be far easier to meet and overcome.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
