About this project
Monster Reader began as a short poem for a children's book and it grew and grew, as monsters sometimes do, into a story about a family, a library visit, a monster teacher encouraging her monster students to read a variety of books, and a word swallowing gargoyle, Theodor, who reminds us the importance of books: Reading opens your eyes. Reading opens your world.
When the story begins, a family is starting their weekly walk to the library and then the parents ask their two children, Jason and Megan, "For once, can you walk normal today?" The children remind the parents that they are kids and like to skip and run. Pretty soon, the whole family is doing everything but normal walking all the way to the library.
Once in the library, the librarian, Ms. Moonstar, tells Jason and Megan about a brand new book that just arrived, Monster Reader. She then warns them, "Beware, once you read a monstrous book, you see the world differently and begin to take second looks."
Jason and Megan read the Monster Reader book which is full of all kinds of monsters like: little monsters that nibble nursery rhymes, princess monsters that sip tea with fairy tales, pirate monsters that chomp history with ships and ghostly lore, and a sleuth of monsters not even mentioned here.
When Jason and Megan finish reading the book, they see Ms. Moonstar differently and then she reminds them to visit with the gargoyle out front of the library, the Ultimate Monster Reader. (He flew down from the top of the library just to read some "delicious" books.)
Jason reads the plaque on the statue of Theodor about Reading opening your eyes. And then the family goes home, but they certainly do not walk "normal."
WRITING STYLE and HOME CONNECTIONS
The general target audience for Monster Reader is ages 4 - 10 but, being a Mom and former Reading Teacher, I wrote the book to engage readers of all ages and to encourage monster writers.
Monster Reader is written in poetic verse to keep the text engaging and uses an assortment of "eating" words to associate what monsters do because they are REATING monsters. (When books are delicious, sometimes they can't resist licking the pages and chewing on the illustrations.) So, naturally there is another Yummy element to the book, a KITCHEN CONNECTION!
With the help of Heather Baird, Sprinklebakes.com guru, there is a MONSTER CUPCAKE RECIPE in the back of the book created just for Monster Reader! You got it! A recipe that you may use to create something delicious and monsterly!
Monster Reader is 40 pages long and could serve as a curriculum supplemental book for grades 3 and up to enhance writing strategies with metaphors, rhyme, heightened vocabulary, context and illustration clues, and general connections to the state reading curriculum.
A variety of book genres and story types are mentioned in the book, for instance: nursery rhymes, poetry, fantasy, fairy tale, history, myth, legend, fable, joke, and scary stories. Each story type has an example to help readers make connections and ask questions. A couple of examples are:
Wild, Wooly monsters crunch Tall Tales with Paul and his big blue ox, while myths are yummy morsels of Zeus and Pandora's box.
Little monsters nibble nursery rhymes with rings around the rosies, squishing all the little humpties between their little toesies.
Kickstarter is a way to reach a multitude of people from all over the world, and a way to allow me to bring you along on this monster journey. With so many children reluctant to read and, for those children who are avid readers, I wanted to create a book to appeal to both boys and girls and reinforce the importance of sampling a variety of books to find what works for them as readers.
