This is our first video update! You'll get a better idea of how the main SALT features work along with a walk through of the app interface!
This video gives you an overview of the hardware that will be going inside the SALT card.
If you need to secure your phone for any reason, you're forced to enter a PIN or swipe your thumb every time you turn the screen on. It's not only annoying, it also consumes nearly 52 hours of your time per year. That's 52 hours spent annually on JUST entering your pin.
If you don't use a PIN on your phone, the hassle of entering it every time is probably the reason why you don't.
We believe you should have the best of both worlds; security and convenience. SALT gives you both. When you're near your phone, it's unlocked. When you leave, it locks itself. Automatically.
Most people have their wallets/purses and smartphones with them for most of the day. Using this knowledge, we developed the SALT card, which fits in any wallet.
You simply pair the SALT card with your phone through the SALT app. From that point on, SALT will unlock your phone when the SALT card is within 10 feet of it. You don't have to enter your PIN or do anything aside from turn your screen on.
If you leave to go to the bathroom or accidentally leave your phone somewhere, it will automatically lock itself until your card is back in range, keeping your phone safe.
SALT is made up of two components:
- The SALT card that you can pre-order via this Kickstarter campaign
- The free SALT app that's available for Android and iOS
With just those two components, you save yourself hours every year while maintaining a high level of security.
The perfect other half to the SALT app, the SALT card, is made so it fits into any wallet, even the slim ones. You simply enter the number from the card into the SALT app and put the card in your wallet. That's it.
The SALT card uses a system that has over 281 trillion possible combinations. To put that in perspective, that's 2,810 times more than a standard 8 digit PIN code. You can also require your SALT card be present in addition to entering your regular PIN for an unprecedented level of security.
You won’t have to worry about charging the SALT card because we've developed a custom battery that lasts for over one year. Using the latest Bluetooth Smart technology, we're able to ensure that you won't have to worry about battery life with SALT.
We’ve found that 10 feet between your SALT card and phone is the ideal distance for Salt to automatically lock your phone. In the initial version of the SALT app, this setting will be fixed but in future updates, we'll give you the option of setting your preferred distance.
The SALT card measures in at 3.370″ x 2.125″ x 0.061″ which is exactly the same size as a credit card, only a little thicker. These dimensions are important because they are the standard credit card specifications that wallets are designed around.
The SALT app is extremely easy to use. Once you install it, the app will guide you through the setup options. You'll be ready to go in less than two minutes.
Your SALT card and app work together to find your lost belongings. If you misplace your wallet or purse, the SALT app will show you its last known location on a map.
The SALT app allows you to restrict access to certain apps if the SALT card isn't present. You can select which apps you want to automatically lock when your SALT card is out of range or just specify which apps will require a PIN for entry.
Battery life is one of the most important things about your phone. What good is any device or app if you can't use it on your schedule? Bluetooth Smart allows SALT to provide all this functionality without having a significant impact on your phone's battery life.
We have developed a very simple setup wizard for the SALT app. It will guide you through the setup with a clear description and visual representation of each option.
The SALT app will work with both Android and iOS. (Please see the "FAQ" and "Risks and Challenges" sections for more info on iOS)
We're trying to raise $50,000 in addition to the substantial personal investments we've made. We've saved as much money as we could and are investing all of it into making SALT a success but we still need your help.
So far, we've done everything we could by ourselves including; coding and creating prototypes, creating a brand identity, market research, developing our website, shooting and editing photos, filming and editing the video, creating and executing a marketing strategy, creating this Kickstarter project, verifying quality and usability of the SALT app and cards, plus a lot more.
There's only so much that we can do ourselves, so the money raised through Kickstarter will go towards the following:
The hardware has been developed and is ready for mass production. We worked with an experienced hardware developer that’s headed many high security projects, including voting machines for elections around the world.
While we have a fully functional prototype app developed, we don't have an app available for mass download. Our prototype app is used to demonstrate that each feature works properly and for bug testing. The app development company we've chosen is one of the top companies based in Chicago and has extensive experience with similar apps.
We've confirmed all of the features are possible and will work correctly, now we just need to fully develop the Android and iOS versions. Our next steps are to begin development and continue testing the SALT app.
Please see the "Risks and Challenges" section for more info.
Additional money raised
Anything over the goal will go toward the additional inventory we'll need to cover the orders and toward our stretch goal! More information about our stretch goal is listed below.
We've made sure to get all our ducks in a row before we launch this Kickstarter campaign so the only thing we'll have to do is execute our post-Kickstarter plan.
All rewards include the free SALT app available for Android and iOS. Shipping to the United States is free but please include an additional $2 per card if you live outside of the United States (ex. if you back the 5 SALT cards level, please add $10 for international shipping)
We're very excited to announce our stretch goal for SALT! Our next product is going to be a home version of SALT. It's also a Bluetooth Smart device that does the same things as the SALT card.
When you're at home, you don't necessarily have your wallet with you all the time. The SALT home version will give you the freedom to put your wallet anywhere in your home but still have all the benefits of the SALT card.
If we reach $500,000, we'll reward our backers with the SALT home version for an additional $5! The actual device will retail at $30.
More info and images coming soon!
SALT is compatible with both Android and iOS. Please make sure your device lists Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, BLE or Bluetooth Smart under its specifications.
Android phones with the Bluetooth specifications listed above and that run Android 4.4 or later are compatible.
All iPhone versions 4S or newer are compatible.
If you have any questions about compatibility, please send us a message and we'll let you know if your phone is compatible.
Nikola has experience in both technology and hardware. He is originally from Chicago, Illinois and graduated with a degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Previously, he successfully started Just Think Design and completed a Kickstarter campaign for the Stylo stylus in 2011. The project was funded at 200% in just five days and was delivered to backers on time.
He has been developing the SALT app and card from the beginning so he has an intimate understanding of the entire project. His experience of going from idea to finished product give him the knowledge required to execute this Kickstarter successfully.
Joel is originally from Windsor, Canada. He has a master's degree from the Odette School of Business and moved to Chicago because he was recruited to work for a large government defense contractor.
Joel has successfully started three companies in just the past few years. He is the guy behind the Magnetie, Blunt Neck and Oak Bottle. He's obviously gone through this before and has gained a lot of experience bringing products to market.
His expertise in sourcing products and making sure they get delivered on time with the correct quality specifications is invaluable for a Kickstarter campaign. These traits are especially important when it is our sole mission to deliver a quality product under a time restriction.
Risks and challenges
There will always be risks when launching a new product. With five companies launched between us, we have the experience to handle any setbacks in the launch process. It wouldn't be fair to our backers to not disclose any potential issues, so we've carefully thought things through and outlined our potential issues below:
- Getting the SALT cards certified by the FCC and CE. The hardware is relatively simple so we don't see any major setbacks here. The only issue is testing the hardware which can be a variable. We're leaving ourselves enough time so if there is a delay, it doesn't affect the ship date.
- Software development is always variable and we want to launch a product that has no bugs. We've left plenty of time for us to test the apps so we can correct any issues before we ship the cards.
- We're working with our manufacturer to perfect the hardware for the cards. Due to the sealing process, it may be difficult to use our first material choice of PVC. That shouldn't cause a big issue because we can switch the material to ABS which has been proven to work in cases like this.
- Battery life is something you can engineer and run many calculations on. It's impossible to get a 100% accurate number for how long the cards will last but we're trying to get a very good estimate. Our goal is to ship a card that lasts for one year for the average user; however, just like with your phone, that number may change based on individual use.
- We're positive SALT will work for Android. The Android platform is very open and allows for a very easy development process. iOS is a little more closed and difficult to develop for. We're working on a few methods to get our app to iOS users and at this point we're confident we'll be able to do just that. If we can't get the PIN lock and unlock functionality to work on iOS, SALT will still perform the other features including wallet/purse tracking and locking of specific apps based on proximity.
Knowing what our potential setbacks are allows us to create a more accurate timeline for the project. Our goal is to ship the product we described on time and with a top level of quality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
