The Project

Mystery Spot Books publishes contemporary artist books in small editions that explore geography and geology, cultural and physical. We are preparing to publish our seventh title, Things Boulders Ate by Minnesota based photographer Peter Happel Christian. This book is a photographic mediation that mixes typologies of parking lot boulders and objects of wonder from the artist’s studio shelves. One typology studies the use of boulders as subtle signifiers for Nature as well as physical barriers for automobiles. A second catalogues a random selection of objects from the artist’s personal wunderkammer. Mixed into the two sequences are three seemingly unrelated images. Culled from the artist’s ever-growing archive of photographs, the three outliers disrupt the pattern and rhythm of the book while suggesting connections between disparities. Mingled all together, the typologies and outliers fuse into a singular, but disjointed, archive of weight, wonder and display.

Stretch Goal!

THANK YOU for helping us reach our initial goal! You've been amazing! Now it's time for our stretch goal: $1000 will enable us to print an edition of an even 100 books as well as allow us to pay a few miscellaneous expenses. Once the book is finished, there will be a book launch event at Midway Contemporary Art in Minneapolis. By contributing to this project, you will be supporting a talented contemporary art photographer with a growing reputation nationally and internationally. You will also be helping Mystery Spot Books at a crucial time as it grows into a regional art book publisher.

From The Book

Risks and challenges

For small independent publishers like MSB, each new book represents funding and distribution challenges. MSB works hard to make beautiful and challenging publications and we believe implicitly in the artists we choose to work with. Our regional, national and international network of stockists and collecting institutions have grown steadily in the last year and will continue to grow with our reputation as we expand our publishing activities in the years to come. We hope you will enjoy this book as well as our upcoming projects.
