Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX is the revamped sequel to the Giant Bomb PAX East panel sensation. Award-winning game designer Dan Teasdale (Trainz, Army Men RTS) has signed on to fully realise the potential of a dedicated free flight-tracking system tailored to the world's most traveled man, John T. Drake.
The reaction to showing the Drake Tracker 2000 EX has been fantastic. Just check out this panel footage for yourself!
Where do you go from here, though?
"After the Drake Tracker 2000 EX was shown at Giant Bomb's PAX East panel, I fell into a deep sleep" says Dan. "The most vivid dream struck me soon after.
I was sitting at Gate 5 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. On my lap, my iPad was running Drake Tracker 2000 EX--or at least, some crazy souped-up version of the tracker. It was filled with amazing statistics and fun things to do.
There was also a button shaped like a Diet Coke can.
I tapped the can, and a notification appeared: "Would you like to give John Drake a Diet Coke?"
Before I could frantically mash "OK," I woke up. It was 3am, and I was in a cold sweat. From that point on, my life had purpose: I had to make SUPER DRAKE TRACKER 2000 EX for iOS, and add in a consumable microtransation that contributes to a fund to buy John Drake as many Diet Cokes as possible."
Kickstarter pals, won't you fulfill a grown man's life purpose to make a small, free-to-play mobile tracking app with (literally) consumable microtransactions?
What can I do after I've bought John Drake a Diet Coke across the internet?
By now, I'm sure you've already clicked a "Back This" button to the right. For those of you on the fence, I'm planning to add a few more features alongside the miracle of in-app soda purchasing:
- More Stats! More Graphs! The Drake Tracker 2000 EX only represented a small slice of the data our crack team has collated. Naturally, Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX would expose all of the crazy data we've collated, including things like carriers, airframes, even down to when John Drake wanted to harass a fellow passenger.
- A game similar to Top Trumps but different enough to not be legally infringing! Finally, you can have fun with John Drake's misery. Who would win in a Drake airport-off: SFO or SEA? Now you can find out!
- Dedicated backer space! To say thanks for backing this wonderful and sane endeavor, we'll make sure that your name is included in a dedicated backer space. Some people may call this "the credits", but dedicated backer space sounds way cooler..
Do I get anything cool for backing?
But of course! It's Kickstarter, after all! We've got some really amazing rewards for our backers, including:
The Certificate of Authenticity! To prove your devotion to mobile flight tracking, all backers over $5 will receive a stylish Certificate of Authenticity, perfect for hanging in your holiday home, man cave, or gym locker. For backers over $10, we'll even number, sign, and mail you a physical certificate!
The Men of Game Development 2014 Calendar! Celebrate the hunky hunks of video game development with the Men of Game Development Calendar. Only available to Kickstarter backers, this calendar will spice up any workplace wall or home garage!
Starring industry luminaries like Dave Lang, Manveer Heir, Rich Gallup and Justin Boswell, this calendar is a star-studded celebration of the male game developer physique. It also features a unique piece of artwork by Uber's Chandana Ekanayake on the front cover!
The Drake Drive! For the true travel aficionado look, attach the Drake Drive to your keychain. This 8GB flash drive is shaped like a key, and has John Drake's disembodied head carefully emblazoned on the head of the key.
But, THAT'S NOT ALL! Preloaded on each drive are both Drake Tracker 2000 EX--AND--Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX builds for Mac, Windows, and Linux! Dig deeper, and you'll also find Mac, Windows, and Linux builds of the 4.8 hour art game jam sensation UN PETITE FART!
This is the first AND ONLY way that UN PETITE FART will be released to the public.
$550 REACHED! - Our Kickstarter Goal! This gets us a Unity iOS license, and unleashes Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX onto hundreds of millions of unsuspecting devices.
$4,200 REACHED! - Drake Tracker goes PRO! This gets us a Unity Pro and Unity iOS Pro licence. Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX will take full advantage of the features this brings, including shadows, full screen post processing, and Full Motion Video! Finally, FMV John Drake!
$6,250 REACHED! - Android support - This stretch goal turns John Drake into a robot. The extra money allows us to buy an Android Pro license, as well as a cheap handset to test out Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX on the Android platform. Like the iOS version, this will be free for all Android people.
$8,500 REACHED! - Oculus Rift support - This stretch goal brings the hottest future gaming tech into the world of flight tracking. You won't believe your eyes! This pays for an Oculus Rift dev kit, extra development time, and a huge stack of barf bags from Costco.
$9,999 REACHED! - Ouya support - Let's be honest here, this is getting a little ridiculous. To commemorate that, we'll bring Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX to the Ouya. This stretch goal pays for an Ouya dev kit, additional development time, and a decent camera to record our destruction of the Ouya dev kit after our work is done.
$14,400 - DRAKES ON A PLANE - Inspired by the absolutely brilliant Sega CD game Desert Bus and the Xbox LIVE Indie Game classic Try Not To Fart, DRAKES ON A PLANE is an exclusive simulation included in Super Drake Tracker 2000 EX that simulates the traveling life of John T. Drake.
DRAKES ON A PLANE is a true first person experience. YOU are John Drake. YOU have to manage John Drake's slowly rising stress levels as he sits in his aircraft seat--IN REAL TIME--to real John Drake destinations. Can YOU make sure he doesn't yell at another passenger?
All previous stretch goals apply to this. It'll be available in all versions of SDT2KEX (iOS, Android, PC, Mac, Linux, and any further platforms) and will be compatible with the Oculus Rift.
An IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER that you should read before backing
The Super Drake Tracker EX 2000 is not the product of, nor is it officially affiliated with or endorsed by, Giant Bomb, CBS Interactive, or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates. Accordingly, Giant Bomb will receive no funds contributed to this Kickstarter, nor any in-app purchases made with the Super Drake Tracker EX 2000.
This goes double for any companies I, Dan Teasdale, have been or am currently working for. This is a personal project and does not represent or constitute a product of my current employment.
Risks and challenges
This is a pretty low risk endeavor, given that the Drake Tracker already exists, and I have enough experience as a game developer to see the new features through to completion.
This is my first time creating and shipping merchandise, so there's always a chance that something may go wrong that'd push out the date. There's also a chance that some of the announced Men of Game Development may drop out, in which case we'd need to replace them with other game developers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
