Paint Pots and Coffee Cups: an illustrated guide

Where did this idea come from?

After some time living in Oxford from 2012, I found that there were lots of really interesting artists dotted around the city, with beautifully diverse styles and types of experience, but that there wasn't an obvious sense of an Oxford collective, and only small circles of artists seemed to know of each other. Watch the video for more on this.

With a background in publishing and creative writing, and a love for books and cafés, I started dreaming about a book that would draw artists together by having their work – illustrations of the exterior and interior of a café of their choice – displayed page by page next to each other for the whole city to enjoy, and by being involved in a really accessible project. Hear more about the vision in the video.

What's the book going to be like?

The book will be a full-colour 210mm square paperback book, printed on luxury paper that will show off the illustrations. At the back, after pages of beautiful illustrations, there will be a helpful categorisation of the cafes into the key locations covered – City Centre, Jericho, Summertown, Cowley and Headington – and preferences that certain cafés are best suited to – e.g. Working, Time with parents, Food, Speciality teas or coffees, Novelty factor, Late closing time and Family friendly.

You can see what you can expect from the 33 artists (34 including me!) who have contributed artwork to the book and one sneaky peak section of one of the illustrations you'll get to see in the book, by Sarah Hoyle:

What are the perks?

If getting your hands on the book doesn't give you enough of a buzz, there are many treats to grab in the Kickstarter packages, including entry to a VIP artist party, a set of limited edition postcards, and your name in the book.

Where will the money go?

The funding goal is based on making at least 80 pre-orders of the book. If we get more than 100% that just means more of the printing costs can be covered upfront – so please keep donating!

Here's a rough breakdown of the costs involved and where you can expect your money to go:

It's really important that this campaign generates some extra money to cover the costs of the exhibitions in May as this is the chance to give back to the artists by providing the opportunity for them to display and sell their work. They have given their time, commitment and artwork, so let's celebrate them.

Risks and challenges

I'm confident I can pull this project off to an exceptional standard. Why? For a start, the artwork is amazing. And, I’ve got a background in publishing and art & design, I have produced, printed and sold my poetry pamphlet along with putting on my own painting exhibition. I have experience of project-managing multiple book projects in a publishing house and a charity, liaising with illustrators, writers, designers and printers, and organising creative events, and I know a great graphic designer who is going to lend a hand. Oh, and I love cafes, art and people! Sorted.

A very exciting problem might be that I become inundated with pre-orders and so fulfilling orders might take a bit of time. But that's wishful thinking. At worst though, I'll just spend the day in the Post Office and annoy everyone else in the queue behind me. #worththerisk

The book is in its design stage at the moment. Though I will endeavour to keep all to schedule, things can crop up. If it looks like there will be a delay, I will update you as soon as I know.

Help us spread the love of cafes and art! Support this project on Kickstarter and help this project get off the ground. The sooner we sell the books, the sooner I can *maybe* start on a 2nd edition or of a different city!

With lots of gratitude in advance,

Hannah of Likeness Press
