About this project
New Creation NYC is a coffee shop and bakery with a social mission in Inwood, Upper Manhattan. Our mission is to participate in the renewal of Washington Heights and Inwood in becoming Healthy, Just, and Thriving communities.
The idea is built upon Mr. Jones' passion to equip people with skills to lift themselves out of poverty. For the last 25 years, Mr. Jones has served the community as the director of the Love Kitchen, a soup kitchen located in Inwood. Since then, over a million meals have been served. New Creation NYC is an expansion of the Love Kitchen's mission to actively contribute to the community of Washington Heights and Inwood.
New Creation NYC seeks to turn the traditional coffee shop business model into a center of community development and rejuvenation. Using the resources we acquire as a business, we plan to tackle several prevalent social issues, such as poverty, unemployment, health, and education.

What is the impact?
New Creation NYC is more than just a shop for coffee and cookies. We are a place for people to gather, a space for organizations and small businesses to collaborate and solve social issues, and a cultural center for artists and musicians to display their talents.
We are about providing employment and training opportunities to the disadvantaged using our kitchen space, offering healthier eating options sourcing from sustainable ingredients, and bringing out the best of Washington Heights and Inwood.
How does the fundraiser work?
It is all or nothing. If we do not reach our goal of $50,000, we will not receive any donations pledged and your credit card will not be charged. If we do, your card will be charged on the last day of the campaign, Dec 12th, and we will continue to update you about the impact we're making, the progress of the construction, and the dates for the opening parties for those who claimed tickets.
Where does the money go to?
The money raised will go towards the construction of the space we have picked out at 213th Street and Broadway. This cost includes hiring contractors, buying equipment, and hiring our first trainees. We raised some initial money to get to where we are now, which helped us purchase an oven to start making our products, as well as hire an architect to design the space. Now, we have contractors picked out, and all we need is this $50,000 to tip the scale to become a full-fledged community coffee shop and bakery. Your contributions have a direct impact on these communities and will create many more sustainable opportunities for years to come.
Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about New Creation NYC! We're so excited to be a part of the renewal in Washington Heights and Inwood, and glad that you could join us. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions: firstname.lastname@example.org
More about the Rewards
Our classic chocolate chip cookies will be made with Organic, Fair Trade Certified chocolate chips from Mama Ganache (Check them out here), whose guarantee is that the cocoa beans used in their chocolate were produced in a way that does no social harm. So our cookies are Good for the Earth, Good for the Soul!
Our deliciously spiced oatmeal raisin cookies are full of oats and fiber to support a healthy system! We've reduced the amount of sugar used, and still managed to keep a scrumptious treat!
These Sea Salt Brownies are every chocolate lover's dream! Again, made with Organic and Fair Trade Certified cocoa powder from Mama Ganache, people can't stop raving about our brownies. Sweet, savory, superb!
To celebrate the opening of New Creation, we will be throwing four themed parties as rewards for people who contributed to the process. All donations above $100 entitle you to a ticket to one of these events, and donations above $150 will get you two tickets. Because of space constraint, we will have limited number of tickets per event, so RSVP will be by first come first serve basis. After the success of the campaign, we will send you information on how to RSVP for one of the events.
To sum up all the parties, we will have a grand opening party. Everyone who made a contribution will be invited to join us! Again, space will be limited so it will be on a first come, first serve basis. Oh and did we mention there will be take home goodie bags at all our events?
Opening Party 1: DIY Cupcake Night
Cupcakes were one of the first products that helped us launch our bakery business. To mark the transition to a coffee shop, we will be doing a little reminiscing by having a Do-It-Yourself Cupcake Night. Come after dinner for some sweets and lots of fun. We provide the cupcakes, frostings and sprinkles, and you bring your creative juices to make your own unique cupcake. Who knows, maybe we might add your creation to our menu.
Opening Party 2: All About Chocolate
This is an event chocolate lovers won't want to miss out on. Join us for a night of chocolate stuffed and coated desserts. We will even pair them with the right coffee for you to have the best chocolatey experience. We will then screen a short film about the chocolate industry and find out what all this talk about fair-trade is about.
Opening Party 3: Farm-to-table Brunch
We will be working with local farmers to bring the freshest produce into our kitchen. Join us for brunch as we prepare an array of delicious food made from fruits and vegetables grown in farms near New York City. We will then learn how we can change our cooking and eating habits to support these local farmers, and the importance of eating organic products.
Opening Party 4: Open Mic Night
We expect to have many open mic sessions in our space in the coming years, but we know the first one is probably going to be the most memorable one, and probably the best. Join us for a night of song, story, and poetry as we invite a group of talented people from the community to enrich our space with their works. As always, refreshments provided by us!
The Finale: The Grand Opening
Much was put in to get to the opening of the store, and we want to throw a huge party to celebrate the work everyone has put in to make the dream a reality. We will also be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Love Kitchen's service in the community. Be there to toast to all the good work that has been done in the last 25 years, and the many more years to come with the addition of New Creation to the community.
This is our way of saying THANK YOU to the people who have shown tremendous support to build New Creation. All donations above $1000 comes with a membership. Some of the benefits include free coffee, discounted products, and free use of the library space for private events.
The founders dinner is a special meal to thank our investors, our board members, and our big contributors for believing in us and our vision.
We want to say a big thank you to the people who helped us prepare this campaign. A special shout out to Ivey Ao, our talented animator, and Mara Measor, the incredible singer, who both graciously allowed us to use their work for the video. Check out some of their other works on their websites!
Risks and challenges
We plan to start construction in January 2013 and open by end of March. However, this is just an estimate, and problems might arise during construction which may delay our opening date. Still, with our preparations and good relationships, if any delays do come up, they will be greatly mitigated.
We therefore ask for your patience as we update you on the progress of the construction which will affect the date of our opening party.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The idea of a bakery with a social mission came from Mr. Jewel Jones. Mr. Jones is the manager of the Love Kitchen, a soup kitchen that serves hundreds of meals to the homeless in the community of Inwood every week. He envisioned a bakery that will not only serve as a source of revenue for the soup kitchen, but will also provide training and employment for people living under the poverty line in the community. It is his heart to see lives change in the community and his love for people that makes up the core of our delicious baked products.
When we open the coffeeshop, we believe it will be a place where change for a healthy, just, and thriving community can take place. Not only will we sell great tasting cups of coffee and have freshly-baked, healthy items daily, but we will encourage using the space as a venue for educational, artistic, musical, and community programs.
Programs like healthy cooking classes in our kitchen that teach how to source and use sustainable produce and ingredients. Or tutoring programs to give students the extra help they need after classes in our library. We've reserved wall space to have an art gallery to display local artists' artwork and want to invite musicians to perform. These things are invaluable in building up a community that works together to solve prevalent social issues.
While we are not classified as a religious organization, we are motivated by our Christian beliefs. Having grown out of NYC Love Kitchen's ministry at Manhattan Bible Church and Mr. Jones' passion to serve others, naturally we work to empower individuals and renew communities in the context of the love of Christ. Through our faith we believe we can bring hope and love to those who need it most.
You've already done so much! But anything you can do to "Like" our Facebook updates, Tweet about us, or simply share our story with others is greatly appreciated! When the time comes, we will also need more help through the process of building the storefront and getting ready to open!
If we don't reach the goal, no one gets charged. Basically, the amount we've raised so far are just pledges, meaning no one has actually been charged. Only if we reach our goal of $50,000 will all the pledges go through. Which is also why it is important to not only pledge, but get your friends to do so, too, so we can all be part of this building process!
