Lab-Box Production Update - January

Dear Backers,

First of all, we apologise for not posting the awaited update over the holidays. Over the past few weeks, certain technical matters needed to be thoroughly attended to before we could write an update.

On another note, an important remark: every day that we set back delivery and distribution not only do we lose credibility, but also we lose money. We care to reiterate that delivery and distribution are our main priority and we are working non-stop to achieve it.

Part of the pieces production and moulding has been completed; in fact, medium-format modules and other pieces are being assembled. All metal, rubber and plastic gear has been tested and okayed. All carton package boxes have been printed and are on their way to the factory.

.

However, some tasks are taking longer than expected. Due to Chinese Holidays taking place between 25 January and 15 February, most factories – including ours – have been either closed or experiencing a slowdown in workflow since the beginning of January. Although already in process, our production and assembly line will resume after the holidays.

Over the Chinese Holidays, we will continue to arrange the logistics. We will be asking some of you to confirm, clarify, or edit your delivery address, so we recommend that you check your inbox. In case you would like to update your delivery address, we invite you to contact us directly either via Kickstarter Messages or via email at support@lab-box.it

We will update you on the timeline as soon as we can.

Thank you for your patience and support,

Lab-Box Team

I don’t think it’s a good strategy to tell us the delays are costing you money. Just a suggestion.

    6. Kyle Falconer on

I for one am still stoked to get this, whenever it ends up happening. I totally understand that sometimes delays can happen, and I agree with some of the others here that more transparency would be appreciated, but this is all to be expected with a first attempt of the product and a new design. I just hope I get to use it soon. Good luck guys!

I was a film shooter long ago, and had sold off my gear years before this product was announced. After seeing this kickstarter I was inspired to get back into film, but I made the mistake of buying cameras and other film equipment after backing this and it was a huge waste.

Please keep the updates coming on a regular basis, looking forward to receive the product, hopefully soon.

We are not children whining in the back seat of the car. We are adults who invested in a product which (to me) looked to have already been prototyped and was only needing capital to get produced.
Instead we invested in an idea which apparently hadn’t been designed, tested, or thought through regarding production-regardless of scale.
Having updates is great, but never ending delays aren’t. If we were a board of directors in a company, at what point would we take a vote of no confidence in this team?

Still very excited to receive this project and I can’t wait thanks for the update. As for the babys and little children that are crying on these messages it’s hard to believe some people just can’t ever seem to grow up and be adults. Some children are just terribly spoiled and crying in the backseat of a car all day until they get their toys.

From the FAQ section (last question)

We estimate to ship the first batch in September 2017. Our goal is to finish production and send the LAB-BOX to all our backers by the end of 2017.
I appreciate delays can occur but...

Now nearing the end of January 2019 and still no definite date of delivery, only more excuses

i backed this when i was in uni and have a huge love for 35mm film. now that im in the work force not just only i dont have much time to shoot and also dont have time to even develop at home as i thought i would. dude i wish this thing come out before i get marry. lol seriously all the delay i might just as well buy a ordinary development tool

Thank you for the update! Super appreciative that you're prioritizing quality of the finished product : )

It’s not so much about the delay even though it’s a year ago we should have had delivery. What is more annoying to me is the incredibly poor communication from ars imago. Have run a business involved with manufacturing distribution the most important aspect of your credibility as a company is keeping the customer fully informed on progress on regular and agreed time lines. This is your major failing and is eroding the backers trust in you and your product

I can see good progress so no problem whatsoever for me, I just want a quality product which you certainly seem to be striving for. A project as big as yours is bound to run into annual holidays so no surprises there - keep up the good work.
PS I am also a Ferrania backer so I know about delays!

Yannick, buy a Agfa Rondinax 35U or 60. Shouldn't cost more than 50 bucks on Ebay. I have these and they work fine. The Lab-Box is just a better copy of the original. Beats me why it's taking the team sooooo long to copy the Rondinax and make it better ... Chinese copycats can do this way quicker!

      Such a shame...

I backed this project because i was planning a trip in japan during feb 2019. I thought i'll be able to use it during this big trip... But sometimes, being patient is not enough...

With all of these HUGE delays, i have to let down a big part of my project...

Betting the next delay will be caused by a solar eclipse...

    20. Julian L on

If I'm happy waiting for Ferrania, I'm happy waiting for you. It will be ready when it's ready.

    21. Paul Swortz on

Even experienced project managers get the dates wrong. Everybody is always too optimistic. Sometimes, projects still get delivered on the dates promised, but in order to do that, significant reductions in testing and quality have to be made.

This device will change my film processing capabilities in a big way, in a Transformative way maybe even… I would rather wait a few more months and get a high-quality checked out verified system that is going to be late tight, leak three, Into the envy of all my film camera film nerd things.

I love your vision. I’m excited about getting my hands on the product. I’m going to be happy when it works as planned once I do it. Keep up the good work, don’t let the haters get you down, Keep your eyes on the prize, and let’s ship this baby!

Producing good stuff simply takes huge amounts of time and effort. If it's your first time or your fiftieth, delays can always happen. This is normal. It's very rare that everything works according to plan unless you have years of experience and connections to rely upon.

Just keep plugging at it. Do a great job on the product, make it fantastic. I'm not in a hurry, I'd rather see a nice, quality product than get it faster.

No one point a gun in your head and said “ buy me”. You knew at the first place you are investing in a Startups product. Tell me what kind of investment has 0 risk today? You want sure win? Keep you money in your bank then, but you still loose 3% of inflation a year. Or put your money in stock market for a year and see what you will get back. I’m a businessman and a Leica collector from Hong Kong. I’m seeing a group of young and enthusiastic fellows here working their ass off to delivery a promise, instead of grab the money and go. (There are still risk they might). Look at JUNO mirror, total lost. Just like choosing a stock. Put on your glasses, study, make your judgement and sit tight. It’s all your own risk. My 2 cents.

PS. Yes, my factory is closing from 25th till 15th.

"...certain technical matters needed to be thoroughly attended to before we could write an update."
You mention something the second time in the last 2 updates. What is it/was it?
Transparency should have been your priority, with such a delay.

      From October, 2017:

      "Dear Backers,

as we mentioned in our latest updates on the Kickstarter page, the timeline of the project has changed.

      ...

Within a couple of weeks, we will be ready to launch the production and we calculated that it will take 4 months to complete all the Lab-Box elements and start with the deliveries. By taking into account possible delays, Christmas holidays and logistic management times, we set the shipment for March 2018.

Instead of postponing from month to month, we prefer to give you a realistic date today, and we will do our best to meet it, while keeping you constantly posted along the various steps. "

Please comment your own writing, thanks.

Can’t get a refund until it ships, yet it’s never shipping! Funny, no one thought of the holiday shutdown? Ridiculous. Lame update and the item is probably going to be shit.

Your last update said you were committed to getting the first batch out by the end of the year and you had a commitment with a courier for shipping by the end of January.... am I to assume this is not going to happen? Did your courier commitment cost any of the backer money and will it be refunded when you fail to meet your side of the commitment?
