About this project
Interest in analog photography is growing. New generations of digital natives are rediscovering the analogue process as something new to experiment with. This is why we have decided to create a product that would easily allow anyone to develop film rolls in full daylight, indoor or outdoors.
LAB-BOX is the easiest and quickest tool to develop your own films in full day light, anywhere and at anytime, bypassing the need to load the rolls in the dark.
Once the film is loaded, you can use any process you like by pouring the liquids in and out, as needed.
LAB-BOX is the only tank of its kind on the market, and is the result of long research and developing efforts, paired with an effective and beautiful design.
Take the clip and hook the film. Then close the lid and turn the outer knob in order to wind the film onto the reel. This is what happens inside while you are turning the outer knob.
135 Loading System: once you reach the end, press the orange lever and cut the film to separate it from the cartridge.
120 Loading System: while you pull the backing paper out through the split, the film is automatically wound in the lower lightproof slot.
Once the chemicals are inside the tank, it is possible to agitate them as required by rotating the outer knob which will turn the reel, allowing the correct movement of liquids, for a uniform development. With LAB-BOX it is possible to choose to partially or fully submerge the reel in liquid, to experiment with different kinds of agitation:
Design and prototyping are by VIVO Design Studio, in Rome, Italy. Following a careful test-and-review process, we have been able to optimize the final size of the tank and simplify its construction, in order to deliver an object that is both sturdy and easy to use. Our specialized team created detailed technical drawings, transforming them into 3D models and making use of all the latest digital manufacturing technologies.
LAB-BOX is a project by ars-imago international. We have worked with analog photography for many years and our mission is to keep it alive encouraging everybody to enjoy film photography.

Risks and challenges
We are first and foremost passionate analog photographers. We work with analog photography, we travel with our cameras, shoot almost daily, we spend a lot of time developing films and talking about old and new photography-related stuff.
ars-imago is a company devoted to analog photography and run by analog photographers. Coming into one of our stores, you will see how over ten years in the business has built our knowledge as well as our commitment to this fascinating art.
This means that we bring our experience into play and this is the kind of product that we felt the need for, as photographers. We would like to make it for ourselves and share it with others too.
We teamed up with VIVO Design Studio because their experience in product development, prototyping and manufacturing makes them the perfect match for our goals.
LAB-BOX is a unique product and is the result of two years of research and tests.
The 135 and 120 loading system is the main feature of the product and we are committed to make it work smoothly, with no risk of failure or damage to the film.
LAB-BOX will be produced by injection moulding, by far the best way to obtain a high-quality, sturdy product. It must be noted, though, that a larger production than expected might require a longer time to complete.
The creation of the injection moulds is a crucial step of the process, especially for some of the more delicate parts like the reel and the film guide; these will be the ones that will require the most effort and precision. This part of the project is the one that may cause delays in the timeline, however we are already in contact with specialist manufacturing partners and we are ready to begin.
We pledge to communicate often and transparently and update our supporters all through the production process, keeping them in the loop and allowing them to follow each step, making them fully aware, should any delays arise at any time.
LAB-BOX will be produced and assembled in Italy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
