About this project

UPDATE: We now have the exhibit scheduled to run from September 27 through October 6 at Gallery 55, 55 South Main Street, Natick, MA.  Watch this space for further announcements of receptions and events!

The Artist:

Richard Michael Gorman Powers (1921-1996) was one of the most important illustrators of the 20th century.  While he drew and painted in an incredibly wide variety of styles, he is best known for bring surrealsim to the masses with his science-fiction book cover art of the 1950s and 60s.  He was a prolific commercial illustrator, producing many hundreds of book covers, book illustrations, magazine illustrations and the like throughout his long career.

In addition to his commercial illustrations, Richard Powers produced a large body of fine art work for his own enjoyment.  Some of it is reminiscent of his surrealistic style, while other works can be more representational:

He distinguished between his two bodies of work by his signature.  Works that he did on commission he signed "Powers", whereas works he did for his fine art exhibits are signed "Gorman Powers" after one of his middle names.

The Exhibits:

We exhibited a number of these works in June, 2012 in a show entitled "Richard Powers: Public And Private".  Click here to view works from that show.

But wait, there's more!  While going through the works in Richard Powers' estate, we encountered a number of forays into 3-D art!  He constructed a number of shadowboxes which combine elements of painting, collage, sculpture, and found art.  Collectors who are familiar with both his commercial and his fine art work have been surprised to learn about the existence of these shadowboxes:

In addition to showing the shadowboxes themselves, we would like to show a number of other larger works from the estate, including some works that show the transition from 2-D to 3-D art.

Fundraising Goal:

These shadowboxes are large, and most are in need of repair before they can be shown.  We are seeking to raise $3,000 to be able to put on this exhibition.  $1,500 will go towards renting a satellite gallery that has the space to do these works justice, the remainder will go towards professional repair and preparation of the works for exhibit.

Your Reward:

By arrangement with the Powers estate, we are producing high-quality giclee reproduction prints of a number of works from the previous show:
