A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Introducing The Power Roaster:
The Power Roaster is unlike any other machine. Simple and elegant in design and easy to use, the Power Roaster is capable of roasting enough coffee for a household in 6 minutes or less. As good, and even better, than any home or commercial machine on the market, it is designed for simplicity so that anybody can use it with no unnecessary dials or gauges, It is also very affordable and will actually start saving you money in a few month's time.
After years of research and working with a coffee roasting prototype machine built for use in the home, we have finalized our elegant design and have been very satisfied with its function and longevity.
We have found through our research that most people are unaware that roasting coffee at home is even possible and believe that coffee beans must be roasted in a huge facility. It is unfortunate that so few coffee drinkers have experienced the taste and sensation of freshly roasted coffee.
We believe in challenging the status quo by enabling everyone to experience for themselves how fresh roasted coffee tastes and feels. We have made it simple and affordable.
The Power Roaster has been designed to ensure a consistent and even roast without additional complexities and without compromising quality. In addition, with aesthetics and sustainable sources in mind, we have deliberately sourced materials of solid wood, glass and metal, whilst minimizing the use of plastics. The end result is a beautifully handcrafted machine that is unlike any other.
Before launching this campaign, we have invested in initial tooling costs and have already sourced the materials and labor necessary to produce our machine. Our goal here is to produce a truly affordable machine. In fact, by using the Power Roaster and buying green coffee, consumers will be able to save a substantial amount of money and make much better coffee in the process! In order to achieve our goal, we need you, the backers, to help us cross the finish line! With a successful campaign, we can produce more units and spread the Fresh Roasted Coffee Experience through the Power Roaster and into people's homes for the first time. This is the solution to that perfect cuppa that everyone can and must have!
Shipping Costs and Custom Duties:
It is important for our backers to receive the Power Roaster quickly once it has been shipped out. We have learned that shipping costs also creates some amount of stress for many backers.
Therefore, to relieve some of this stress, every pledge for our Power Roaster will include FREE Shipping Worldwide to as many countries as we could, including Singapore, USA, Japan, Europe, and many more. To achieve this, we have secured an arrangement with a global logistics company to support us on this KickStarter project. If you are based in another country, do contact us and we will do our best to work on the shipping costs together.
In addition, the free shipping will include tracking to keep backers updated and provide a greater peace of mind on the progress of shipment.
My name is Ray Lay. I provide Really Really Fresh Coffee for everyone who loves a delightful cup of this beverage. I deliver a Fresh Roasted Experience through events such as the Singapore Coffee Festival, EarthFest and many more.
I grew up drinking coffee at a very young age. In my teenage years, I relied on instant coffee, although I found the taste bitter. I assumed that the more bitter the coffee, the higher the quality. At times, I had no choice but to add heaps of sugar, cream, milk, or all of the above. I was wrong, but didn't know it for many years.
Fast forward to the early - 2010's. I stumbled onto a Tedx talk that BLEW my mind. I felt that I had finally found the essence to awesome coffee -- freshness! That Tedx talk was presented by Asher Yaron, the original brains behind the Power Roaster! (Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaQNy0Ef4YY)
With my technology background and pure love for coffee, I joined Asher in the quest to enable all coffee drinkers to obtain an awesome fresh roasted experience in their homes, as well as to allow cafe's to provide the same experience for their customers.
My name is Asher Yaron, and I have been involved in the coffee world for more than 10 years. First as a barista, then as a coffee roaster, an inventor of commercial coffee roasters, TEDx speaker, author, and now inventor of a home coffee roasting machine we call the Power Roaster.
It is not so much about how the coffee is roasted, but about how quickly the coffee is consumed after it is roasted that makes the biggest difference in the quality of the coffee. Like freshly baked bread right out of the oven, coffee is best consumed immediately after roasting.
This tradition started more than a thousand years ago in Ethiopia, home of the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony and largely considered the birthplace of coffee. Here, coffee is considered to be a sacred gift from the gods, and a daily ritual of roasting, grinding, and brewing in quick succession is practiced. This makes for a special and potent cup of coffee! This campaign is promoting the identical roast, grind, and brew process but with the addition of today's high tech equipment assisting this process.
Roasting coffee is actually a very simple and easy process. It is virtually identical to making popcorn. With just a little bit of practice, anyone can become a master roaster and enjoy the benefits of freshly roasted coffee.
What about using a Popcorn machine? Some of you may have heard of home roasters using a popcorn machine to roast coffee. We have tried it too and found it to be very inconsistent, as reported by other home roasters. Over time, we found reliability issues and of course the warranty was voided since the popcorn machine was not designed to roast coffee. Here is a table that provides some comparisons, with further details found in our FAQ.
Risks and challenges
Other Kickstarter projects involving coffee have not delivered what was promised, either with regard to timeline or even the product itself.
In order to avoid the mistakes others have made, we have been very slow and deliberate in making sure that we are ready to produce our machine. We have had several working prototypes during the past several years which we could have launched, but we held back due to our great need to do as much of the sourcing and manufacturing process as possible to make the Power Roaster effective and reliable, as well as delivering the Kickstarter Rewards on time.
Thus, we continued to demonstrate and test these prototypes to a small group of people located in different countries around the world to ensure it works well in as many conditions as possible.
Last year (2017), we even used the Power Roaster to roast coffee LIVE during the Singapore Coffee Festival, We were one of just a few vendors who were invited to host demonstrations at "The LAB", and the only vendor conducting hands-on Coffee Roasting workshops that afforded a close-up view of how the Power Roaster works as well as a chance to taste the coffee which was ground and brewed immediately after roasting!
Through these experiences, we have learned a tremendous amount about the use of these machines and it has enabled us to understand how to make this machine durable, reliable, and beautiful at the same time. (Reference https://peatix.com/event/277601)
We have recently paid for tooling costs and produced exact prototypes which we have tested further. The materials and quality workmanship have already been sourced and we are ready to produce our machine in larger quantities.
Our machine is geared towards coffee lovers and enthusiasts who want the best coffee experience possible......and....that can actually save them money at the end of the day. Our goal here is to the change the daily coffee habits of the masses by making our machine affordable without compromising quality, effectiveness, aesthetics and reliability.
