CANO – Handcrafted Footwear meets NFC Technology
Get a pair of ethically and sustainably handmade boots, sandals or huaraches to join our supply chain transparency revolution.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Mon, November 19 2018 7:09 PM UTC +00:00.
We are CANO, the footwear brand for sustainable and ethical boots, huaraches and sandals that revolutionizes supply chain transparency.
Since we have founded CANO in 2016, we have followed our vision to give the artisans behind our handcrafted shoes the credit they deserve for their outstanding craftsmanship and passion. Therefore, we have always fostered fair working conditions and sustainable manufacturing processes.
Now, we are ready to make our vision into reality in an even bigger way following the movement “Who made my clothes”. At CANO, we have created and implemented a digital system to track all information at every step of our supply chain for every individual shoe. You want to know who was behind your pair of CANOs and how CANO supports them? No problem! Get our app and find out yourself.
We want to revolutionize the supply chain transparency in the fashion world with this new approach.
WHO MADE MY CLOTHES 2.0
Our transparency approach is based on NFC technology and our vision is to equip every CANO shoe with an NFC tag. The NFC tag serves as a small data storage chip that collects all the information at each step of the supply chain it goes through on its way to you. During our manufacturing process, every artisan is equipped with a small computer developed by CANO to transfer his or her data, as well as the data of the respective manufacturing step, onto the NFC tag.
After your CANOs have arrived, you can access the information on the NFC tag with the help of our CANO app. Use that data to have a look at our supply chain and get to know the artisans – along with their passion and skill – behind your product.
Near field communication (NFC) is based on RFID technology. It is an internationally standardized communication protocol for transferring data contactlessly between two devices. NFC works up to a distance of four centimeters using electromagnetic induction.
Due to its short distance, it is a very secure way to transfer data that makes it virtually impossible for someone to hack into either of the two devices. As a result, the technology has become very important for contactless payment and mobile payment like Apply Pay or Android Pay. In fact, today, most of our credit cards and smartphones are equipped with NFC technology.
Please note that the NFC tags cannot be used to track you. Since the NFC tag can’t be connected to the internet, it can’t send any data over a range longer than four centimeters. For additional security, we encrypt the NFC tag in the final step of our manufacturing process so that no more data can be edited, added or deleted.
Before implementing NFC tag technology, we asked all of our artisans if they are comfortable with us showing their data to our customers. All of our artisans were happy to show their name and work, underscoring their pride and confidence in their skills and quality product they create. Even so, they are able to customize the amount of information they make available. As a result, we have more information available about some artisans than others.
We work closely with our artisans. Their outstanding skills, amazing ideas and openness for trying new things are a fantastic help when we’re designing and creating new models. That’s why we always like to stress that our artisans are the heart and soul of our brand, and why we always try to give back.
In addition to paying fair wages, we support our artisans by financing selected projects to improve their and their families’ working and living environments, such as paying the school fees for their children. To execute these initiatives, we’re planning a CANO foundation that will fully run by the end of the year.
We are very proud of the amazing craftsmanship of our artisans. The skills of our artisans have been passed on and improved from generation to generation. What’s more, our artisans are always open to learning new and modern styles. Together with them, we have been working on our models for many months. The result is an amazing blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design to create durable, comfortable and fashionable shoes.
To manufacture our shoes, we work together with two Mexican family-owned businesses that have existed for generations. Our huaraches are manufactured in Sahuayo and our boots and sandals in Leon.
We have the ambition to keep our environmental footprint as low as possible. For us, this important effort breaks into two key parts: how we source our raw materials and how we dispose of our shoes.
1. RAW MATERIALS
Organically sourced, vegetable tanned leather
We regularly visit every ranch, from which we source our leather. All of them are located in Central Mexico to ensure short distances between our different suppliers, which minimizes the environmental impact of transporting materials.
All of our leather is vegetable-tanned using a century-old tradition. This means that we only use plant- and vegetable-based tanning agents, leaving out any harmful chemicals like chromium. This reduces the pollution of our leather to an absolute minimum.
We use vegetable-tanned leather for all leather parts for all our models. We do not make exceptions or compromises when it comes to the choice of our leather.
Natural materials for our soles
To avoid as much plastic and rubber as possible, we also looked for soles that can be naturally sourced. We have designed soles that are made out of leather and natural crepe. Not only are they environmentally friendly, they are extremely comfortable, stylish and elegant.
2. DISPOSAL OF SHOES
Since most of our materials are biodegradable, the shoe will vanish without leaving any traces after it has been discarded. Our vegetable-tanned leather, for example, will vanish completely within 25 years of its disposal in nature.
Nonetheless, we offer every CANOs owner the opportunity to give the shoes back to us for a store credit in our online shop. Depending on the condition of the pair, we will use it either for supporting social projects or we will dispose of them in a way that ensures minimal pollution.
SHOE SIZE TABLE
We offer shoe sizes from EU 36 to 47. Have a look yourself to find which size will fit you best.
Risks and challenges
Since we founded CANO in 2016, the development and integration of NFC technology into our supply chain has been one of our biggest challenges. After six months of trying out and testing, we are proud to declare that the prototype is finally working. In the last two months, we have further improved our transparency system. All shoes that come out of our supply chain have an integrated NFC tag showing all information from every step of their respective supply chain.
For us, it is most important to deliver our products on time. However, since our products are handmade and the artisans with the necessary skills are very rare there is always a chance for potential delays. Besides, our leather for the huaraches is naturally dried under the sun, hence minor delays might result from bad weather conditions. Nonetheless, as we are aware of these circumstances and have already successfully managed two production cycles, we are confident that our timeline is very realistic.
Since our leather is vegetable tanned and kept as natural as possible, there is a chance that the colors slightly vary from one hide to another. Nonetheless, we personally met our leather supplier to ensure that the leather is always of highest quality and that the color variations are kept to a minimum.
As we produce the shoes following the Mexican shoe sizes, there might be small variations in the conversion into other shoe size matrices. To solve this issue, we provided help with a conversion table and tried to make it as adequate as possible. Besides, we are always happy to help, in case of questions. prepared for exchanging sizes, if necessary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
