What is CANO?
CANO is a young shoe brand that designs ethically handcrafted huaraches. The huarache [translated sandal] is a traditional Mexican shoe which has its roots in the Aztec culture and can still be found all around the country. Together with our artisans, we create and manufacture timeless shoe designs that are inspired by the traditional huarache but have a more modern twist to it. The result is our CANO, the perfect shoe for every man or woman who does not only look for unique and stylish footwear but also wants to make a statement towards sustainable fashion.
What is our vision?
With CANO, we want to promote the huarache and its sustainable craftsmanship. Our vision is to empower artisans all around the world to follow their passion and thereby enabling them to provide for their families. We want to transparently show how this project is brought to life and how it impacts the lives of our artisans and their families. With this, we hope to inspire social entrepreneurs all around the world to work together artisans and to support them spreading their craftsmanship.
Why do we need Kickstarter?
After many months of preparation, we founded CANO at the end of 2016. Early 2017, we directly started with the production of our first models, which we successfully launched last summer. We were amazed by the positive feedback our shoes and our idea of fair fashion received. This made us realize we were truly onto something. Now it is time to increase our impact. In order to do so, we decided to scale up the production. So we went back to Mexico and together with our artisans, we improved our models and added new ones to the collection. Our new collection is planned to be produced soon and to ensure the funding, we need your support. So, if you like our idea of fair fashion, then join our Kickstarter Campaign today and look forward to your pair of CANO huaraches.
Believing in the outstanding abilities of our artisans and their importance for our cause, we want to give back! Therefore, we strive towards the best possible working conditions for our artisans through tripling their wages and fostering a good work environment.
To ensure a good work environment, we collaborate with a workshop that prepares the leather stripes and the basis for the shoe and then distributes it to our artisans’ homes where the shoes are woven. The shoes will then be picked up again to be soled and polished at the workshop. This process allows women to work from home, granting them the opportunity to care for their children while pursuing their profession and earning sufficient income.

CANO huaraches are unlike any leather shoe you have ever worn. The incredibly soft leather that is cut into strings and then woven into the shape of a shoe brings along flexibility and adaptability. Since the leather strings stretch over time, the shoe perfectly adapts to the shape of your feet.
Another great benefit of the woven leather strings is that the space between them allows air to move freely and let your feet breathe. Thus, even without wearing socks, you will never get sweaty feet. Additionally, the leather-lined cushioned insole gives extra comfort to the sole of your feet.
With its fine-woven upper and it’s shiny color, the Benito is the perfect summer shoe for those who want to stand out. The elegant and joyful look make our BENITO a fantastic statement piece to finish your summer outfit. Is this the shoe for you? We offer them in a beautiful turquoise and in a metallic silver.
Are you craving that little extra? What about the same woven model with a white rubber sole? We offer this version of the BENITO in red and deep purple. The perfect summer shoe for everyone that loves a sporty vibe and wants to make a statement.
Designed as a blend of the classic huarache and the tassel loafer. A fascinating combination that fits as good to your beach outfit as it does to your work dress. Blue or brown? Make your choice!
A mix of Mexican traditions and cultures. Inspired by the spiritual culture of the Huichol, an indigenous people living in the mount areas of central Mexico, each braided piece tells a story of its own. We combined these storytelling pieces with the shoe making skills of our artisans to create this beautiful blend of traditions, resulting in our colorful HUICHOL sandal.
Created with a fine-woven leather upper, the BENITO allows the feet to breathe freely during a hot summer day. This in combination with its natural crepe sole makes the shoe an outstandingly comfortable and stylish shoe. Using the naturally coagulated rubber that is collected straight of the trees, make this model 100% natural.
This BENITO has the same fine-woven leather upper but is designed with our classic crepe sole giving it a more sleek look. Choose your favorite color - red, blue or black - and make this shoe a true statement piece for all your summer outfits.
The fine-woven leather front of the HIDALGO transforms a regular oxford into a unique shoe perfect for every occasion. Available with a leather and a crepe sole, this model can be worn with a classic look or with a more modern outfit.
The fine-woven pattern along the side and on top gives the ZAPATA a modest but joyful element. This makes the derby a stylish allrounder for every moment.
Leather is a natural product that has been used as a key material for making shoes for thousands of years. However, not all leather is the same. There are huge differences in its quality and its environmental impact. To ensure the highest quality with the lowest-possible environmental impact, CANO uses leather that is vegetable-tanned and air-dried. Let us explain what that means.
Huarache artisans have used vegetable tanned leather for centuries. Vegetable-tanning is solely based on plant- or earth-based tanning agents and therefore ensures a low ecological impact. However, without potent chemicals, vegetable tanning takes much longer than its counterpart - chrome tanning. Vegetable tanning takes a good 4 weeks, whereas chrome tanning can be done in 5 days. That is the reason why, nowadays, this type of leather is rarely found. As most shoe manufacturers prefer faster and therefore cheaper processing. Yet, we believe in the advantages of vegetable-tanned leather. Not only is vegetable-tanned leather better for the environment, it is also better for you, since it looks more natural, smells better and won’t irritate your skin like chrome tanned leather potentially does.
Since each of our shoes is entirely handmade and takes up to 6 hours to produce, you can imagine that the whole process does not happen overnight. However, we don't want you to spend the sunny days without your brand new CANOs! Therefore, we decided to already start with the production in January. This enables us to ship your shoes in April, right before the first sunny days.

Risks and challenges
For us, it is most important to deliver our products on time. However, since our products are handmade and the artisans with the necessary skills are very rare there is always a chance for potential delays. Besides, our leather for the huaraches is naturally dried under the sun, hence minor delays might result from bad weather conditions. Nonetheless, as we are aware of these circumstances and have already successfully managed one production cycle, we are confident that our timeline is very realistic.
Since our leather is vegetable tanned and kept as natural as possible, there is a chance that the colors slightly vary from one hide to another. Nonetheless, we personally met our leather supplier to ensure that the leather is always of highest quality and that the color variations are kept to a minimum.
As we produce the shoes following the Mexican shoe sizes, there might be small variations in the conversion into other shoe size matrices. To solve this issue, we provided help with a conversion table and tried to make it as adequate as possible. Besides, we are always happy to help, in case of questions and are, of course, prepared for exchanging sizes, if necessary. Generally, we always recommend choosing a smaller size, as the leather slightly stretch over time. This is one of the huarache's greatest benefits, as it thereby perfectly adapts to your feet.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
