About

"A wonderfully romantic and beautiful film. Novak and Kingsley are excellent" - Variety

  • KIM NOVAK'S LAST FILM!
  • NEVER BEEN SHOWN WORLDWIDE IN CINEMA OR ON TELEVISION
  • NEVER RELEASED ON DVD

This is a film which was made in 1989, shown on Channel Four (who had originally commissioned it) and at the London Film Festival with considerable success, but which then vanished, thanks to the devious machinations of the distributor, who subsequently ceased trading. All rights in the film have now reverted to us. The film has never been shown worldwide on television, in the cinema, and never released on DVD.

Our aim now is to see this deserving film, digitally remastered from it's original 35mm print to HD, re-cut to how the director Tony Palmer first intended it to be and finally released on DVD, with an opening screening in London, introduced by Tony Palmer and Ben Kingsley.

THE CHILDREN - Synopsis

THE CHILDREN is a love story of a man whose destiny is changed by a chance meeting with a young girl and her family.

Middle-aged engineer, Martin Boyne (BEN KINGSLEY), is convinced life has passed him by. His last opportunity for happiness seems to lie in marrying his long-time friend, Rose Sellars (KIM NOVAK), herself recently widowed after a protracted and loveless marriage. She in turn hopes that the man who has been romancing her by letter for over 20 years will love her in the autumn of her life.

Travelling by boat from South America to meet Rose in the mountains of Switzerland, Martin notices a gaggle of seven boisterous children accompanied by their governess (ROSEMARY LEACH). On arriving in Venice, Martin discovers that the noisy brood are not of one family but are the children, step-children and ‘adopted children’ of an old acquaintance, Joyce (GERALDINE CHAPLIN) and her husband, Cliffe Wheater (JOE DON BAKER).

Martin accepts their invitation to linger a few days in Venice, captivated by the children’s youth and energy, and particularly by the 15 year-old Judith (SIRI NEAL). As a result, the long-awaited reunion in the mountains with Rose is somewhat of an anticlimax. Nonetheless he proposes marriage, but is taken aback when Rose asks him to wait a year, saying it is too soon after her husband’s death.

Unexpectedly, the children – led by Judith – turn up on Martin’s doorstep, saying that their ‘parents’ had threatened to separate them and so they had fled to the only ‘friend’ they knew, Martin. Martin agrees to become their guardian while he tries to contact Joyce and Cliffe and convince them of their responsibilities, but eventually to no avail.

Rose becomes increasingly jealous of the attention Martin seems to be paying to the pushy Judith, and when Rose’s seedy lawyer Dobree (ROBERT STEPHENS) comes to visit, he sees what is happening and spells out both to Rose and to Martin that lusting after a 15 year-old girl is both unacceptable and illegal.

The truth – hidden from himself for so long – devastates Martin, and sweeps away the last vestiges of his relationship with Rose. Martin is left alone to face the terrible consequences of a love which, for a fleeting moment, had seemed almost within his grasp but which now, lost, has left him a broken and haunted man.

Risks and challenges

We believe the risks and challenges of our project are low as the
Director Tony Palmer now holds the original 35mm film tapes. He is an
extremely experienced film Director and editor and so we believe the
execution risk is low.

One challenge will be to make the film available to audiences over the
world as it is an old film, even when restored in HD. We believe
however that the dramatic performances of the cast, the beautiful
cinematography and new music soundtrack will mean that this film
adaptation of Edith Wharton's classic novel will still resonate with
contemporary audiences.
