Help Us Launch the Los Angeles Production of RENT!

The History:

Loosely based on Puccini’s 1896 opera La Bohème, Jonathon Larsons’ Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock opera RENT follows a year in the lives of seven friends as they deal with love, loss, and artistic struggle in New York’s pre-gentrified Lower East Side of the 1990s. When I saw RENT on Broadway for the first time as a 15-year-old I knew my life would change forever. The magic and electricity of the production, the moving struggles with addiction, poverty and AIDS, and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit draws you in, hugs you tight, and throws you back onto the street after the curtains drop with a renewed vigor for life.

The Project:

Although the cultural landscape of bohemia has changed quite a bit since Larson wrote RENT in the mid-nineties, the enduring themes are still as topical as ever. Armed with the approval of the original RENT production team in New York, I am producing RENT in the spring of 2011 in a warehouse in industrial downtown Los Angeles, where an artistic renaissance is underway in the vein of 1990s Alphabet City. The musical numbers will be the same, but we’re adding our own special West Coast touch to everything else: drinks will be served to the audience in brown paper bags, a well-known LA rock band will provide the live score, and the set will knock your socks off.

Where You Come In:

The spirit of RENT is very DIY, but we still need a little help to get this production off the ground. And that’s where you come in! Donations will go into renting the theater space, attainting the legal rights of the show, costumes, set design and rehearsal space. The actors and crewmembers will be volunteering their talents for free.

Why It Matters:

I want this production of RENT to reach out and touch young people just like it did for me when I was 15. RENT is not a show about glitz, glam or money. It is a show about *HEART*. Your donations will make this dream a reality and I can't thank you enough in advance for your contribution. No matter how small your donation, it will help fuel the legacy of Larson’s epic vision, and from all of us trying to live a creative, passionate, collaborative life: we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
