This tale recounts the exploits of a steam-powered automaton with a human soul and a demonically possessed mouse. They are spiritually linked, and cannot escape each other.
Using their shared demonic power they battle ghouls and monsters for The British Occult Secret Service (B.O.S.S.), under the eye of spymaster magician Silas Pope, at the height of the Golden age of the Victorian Era.
The aim of this campaign is to fund a trade paperback collection of the complete first arc of Cognition.
This provides the perfect jumping on point for new readers as they will be able to buy a complete story, but I've tried to cater the campaign so there are a few products that will be of interest to backers that have supported the run of comics from the very beginning.
You can download a pdf of our #0 issue for FREE here or by using the banner above. It's a great taster of the world and story we set out to tell. I hope you'll join us to find out how it ends.
PROOF COPY VIDEO!
The book will be 196 pages. All of the sequential story pages are black and white, but the covers and pin-ups will be full colour. The book will be UK standard size (slightly smaller than US comic size) 240x157mm, perfect bound with a matte laminate cover. This is a print spec I've used before and the results are very tactile and pleasing.
The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted the Comichaus logo on the cover image (find out more about Comichaus here). This collection is being made in partnership with Comichaus in an effort to widen distribution after the Kickstarter is fulfilled. But I want to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR... Kickstarter backers will get their books first. The digital version of the book will not be on the Comichaus app until six months after this campaign has been fulfilled.
This is a partnership about trying reach a wider audience AFTER the campaign (if we're successful), the book was only made possible becasue of the support it found on this platform, so Kickstarter backers will be served first.
What can you get before everyone else has a chance? Read on...
I always try to produce rewards that will give added value to backers, without the cost of those rewards inflating the target to an extent that the main point of the campaign is lost. That being the book print run.
This time I made a special consideration to include items that might appeal to backers that have already purchased the single issue comics and don't wish to 'double-dip' for the trade. So I've created a few products that fit in with the trade collection but compliment the series up to this point.
This product was the reason I decided running a Kickstarter for the trade collection could be a possibility. The single issue comics have all been funded through the wonderful support of KS backers and I didn't want to risk asking for their support to pay for something they already had in another format. I needed something that could work with what they had, while offering a new format to new readers, readers who prefer trades or backers that wish to 'double dip'.
This collector's box is the result of months of research and work. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome and I hope you'll agree it was worth the time and effort. It sounds like a long time, but I wanted to make sure I could provide a quality product without prohibitive pricing.
Dimensions: h 255mm, w 160mm, d 20mm(They sit perfectly next to a US trade paperback.)
These boxes are limited to a run of 300 (they will be hand numbered on the sealing sticker that accompanies the flat box). I have split them across reward tiers to make various attractive packages. They are made from micro flute cardboard, screen printed black.
If you select the box on it's own this will be sent flat packed for the backer to assemble. If you select a reward with books and a box, the box will be made up and dispatched containing the books.
Metal Bookmark Hook
The nice thing about a trade collection is a spine! It sits nicely on a bookshelf and of course, it's a long enough read that you might have to mark your place. So I've sourced a bookmark that fits in quite nicely, thematically, to the book.
A metal bookmark hook. Plated with an antique brass finish and laser engraved with a cog motif, fits nicely with the story and period, but I didn't want to explicitly 'brand' it. It can simply be a nice bookmark that you got someplace.
Dimensions: Approx 135mm in length. The oval tab is 15mm x 32mm
Mystery Merch Grab-Bag
Over the last 3 years I've had the pleasure of commissioning pin-up art to support the single issue comic campaigns. All of this art will feature in the trade collection. BUT if you're new to the book and like a bit of supporting merchandise I can offer you a little pack I make available at conventions. The Cognition Mystery Merch Grab-Bag. It includes 3 Art Prints, 3 Postcards and 1sticker, all selected randomly.
Full set of Single Issues
If you like your comics as comics and you haven't fallen into this story yet; you still have a chance to add the full Vol#1 run to your longbox of choice as five single issue comics.
You'll notice that a lot of the reward tiers have limited quantities. That is becasue I've decided to put some of the products into production BEFORE running the campaign. This was the best way for me to make sure I could fulfill as quickly as possible once the funds arrive (upon hitting target!) To source and make the sort of products I wanted to have available would have meant making backers wait a very long time, and I don't like doing that. So, fingers crossed I've made enough! Toes crossed we get funded and add the books to the 'done list'.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this campaign.
This is a very special chance to own a piece of Cognition. There is VERY little original art that has been created in the book, Sam began very early on with penciled pages and structural layouts before changing his process towards digital. For the first time he is making some of those pages available for sale. The only other artist that has worked on sequential pages in the book traditionally is Adam Jakes, who completed the final short 'Uncorked' Adam never usually sells his originals, but has decided to give you the chance to grab a bit of Cognition history. I'm the only other person that owns a page of that story... For now.
The pages are only available for delivery inside the UK (if international backers are interested, a quotation on international shipping can be provided, though with tracking it will be expensive).
The reward tier includes a digital copy of the trade, but NOT the print book. If you wish to pair an art page with an existing reward, please message me and I'll sort out the logistics.
All art will be dispatched directly from the artist... If paired with other rewards, they will arrive separately.
If these pages prove popular, I might be able to persuade Sam and Adam to make more available, but there aren't all that many!
Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal. The main content of the book will be ready to go to print by the end of the campaign. All of the merchandise rewards have been manufactured in advance.
I hope to be able to fulfill all rewards within 4-6 weeks after the completion of a successful campaign. I have geared all the work involved in creating and delivering the rewards towards the skill-set, experience and contacts I have gained through working in the design industry for over 15 years.
If there are any unforeseen problems, I will be transparent and upfront, while keeping all backers updated as I solve them.
With the experience gained from my previous campaigns, I feel totally confident that I’ll be able to deliver on all of the promises set out above.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
