WE"VE REACHED ALL OF OUR STRETCH GOALS! This means we have the funds to produce the art for issue #1, any extra funding from here on in will reduce the target needed to print it.
The support this campaign has attracted is beyond any of my expectations, so I must once again thank all of you that have pledged your hard earned money to make this book a reality.
All physical backers will get the prints. All backers that have already pledged to receive the postcard set will get extra cards. Of course the postcard set can be obtained as an add-on to any other physical reward. See the bottom of the page for details.
You can pledge as little as £5 (in the UK) and end up with a copy of Cognition #0, and a set of 6 - 8"x10" art prints.
For £10 (in the UK) you can end up with a copy of Cognition #0, a set of 6 - 8"x10" art prints and a set of 9 postcards.
Please continue to share the campaign and thank you once again for your continued support.
Cognition #0 is a 34 page, black & white, single issue comic that follows the exploits of a steam-powered automaton inhabited by a human spirit called Cal and a demonically possessed mouse named Sigma. They battle spirits, monsters and folkloric nasties for the British Occult Secret Service (BOSS) during the ‘Golden Age’ of the Victorian era.
Issue #0 contains 3 short stories that introduce the main characters, their world and the supernatural laws that govern them.
They Never See it Coming - The BOSS team run sting operations, looking to expose fake spiritualist mediums. The trouble starts when they stumble over the real deal.
The Devil’s Fishing Hole - Cal & Sigma investigate when a number of people go missing on Hackney marshes. They get more than they bargained for when they discover truth.
Frame Breakers - A dangerous group of radicals plot the downfall of the British Empire. A dangerous enemy is revealed.
Included in the issue is the BOSS Personnel File, which gives a bit more information about our heroes.
The main content of issue #0 is available to read digitally on Tapastic -
The comic that will be produced as a result of a successful campaign will have a few extras thrown in, but more on that later...
Here are some page samples, just in case you don't want to read the whole thing until you have it in your hands!
240x157mm Page size. 36 page comic, 4 full colour pages (cover), 170GSM Silk paper stock. 32 black and white pages (inside), 130GSM Silk paper stock. Saddle stitched binding.
I’ve funded the production of the #0 issue as a way to prove the concept. I made it free to read digitally and received a very positive reaction, which has led me to using Kickstarter.
With your help we can get the story into print.
To make the print run special I wanted to add more content. I’ve asked 4 talented small press artists to contribute a pin up with their take on the characters.
First pin-up revealed at 50% funded. By Wayne Lowden
Second pin-up revealed at 75% funded. By Ben Peter Johnson
Third pin-up revealed at 100% funded. By Robert Last.
Fourth pin-up revealed at 100% funded. By Denis Vermesse.
These will be added to the back of the issue, as well as the Kickstarter contributors thank you page.
Ken Reynolds - Writer/Letterer/Creator
Ken Reynolds was born in Suffolk (1983). He currently lives and works in Ipswich along with his lovely (tolerant) wife and beautiful daughter.
After graduating with a Degree in Graphic Design he has been working in the industry for over 10 years.
The skills of layout, typography, pre-press processes and time management acquired in this time made the transition to working in comics feel like a natural evolution.
He has lettered for many independent publishers and creators, including upcoming work for Grayhaven Comics, Insane Comics & Arcana. He was proud to be part of the lettering team that completed the 750+ page epic that is ‘The Explorers’ Guild’ by Jon Baird, Kevin Costner and Rick Ross.
Ken edits the experimental comic anthology ‘Sliced Quarterly’ and acts as Assistant Editor for 100% Biodegradable (for David Hailwood who has been kind enough to script edit Cognition), a sci-fi anthology comic. Both titles showcase a breadth of indie talent.
Sam Bentley - Artist
Sam was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1993, where he still lives and works. He uses both traditional and modern art mediums, and often combines them in his work.
Drawing since a very early age he decided to pursue a career in comic book art in 2012. Since this decision, Sam has drawn as often as possible and has improved his skills to a professional level. Sam continues to draw every day.
He graduated from the University of Derby in 2015, with a first class honours degree in commercial photography. This helps inform his use of research, composition, lighting and colour.
Sam is motivated by all of the comic books he reads and collects, both modern and classic. Artists and creators such as Francis Manapul, Alex Ross, Jae Lee, Andrea Sorrentino and Richard Isanove inspire him.
In 2014, Sam was selected as one of 13 finalists in high profile comic creator Todd Macfarlane’s ‘Lucky 13’ fan art contest. This work was subsequently included in the 250th issue of the Spawn Comic book.
Kickstarter is a great avenue for a book to find an audience. Instead of getting this book printed and hoping it will sell, I like the idea that I can send it to print with a group of people excited and waiting to receive it. I have more stories to tell with these characters, and hope this is the start of something bigger.
The funds raised will go directly to printing costs and pledge fulfillment. I have self-funded the cost of artwork and production up to this point. Any money raised above our target will go directly into the art and production of Issue #1, which is written and ready to go.
I’ve given careful thought to producing rewards that will give added value to buyers, without the cost of those rewards inflating the target to an extent that the main point of the campaign is lost. In short, the print run is the big deal, these extra rewards are the whipped cream and cherries on top.
FREE Digital Comics - Every backer will receive a digital .pdf file of Sliced Quarterly Issue #1&2. This is the experimental comic anthology I edit. Find out more about it here - www.slicedquarterly.co.uk - NOTE - These digital comics are available for free, independent of this campaign.
Limited Kickstarter Bookplate - A numbered run of 100 bookplates, specific to this Kickstarter Campaign. Each one will be signed by Ken, and signed with a sketch by Sam.
Postcard Set - A set of 9 artcards, 148x105mm, Matte finish, printed both sides with a common back design. ***STRETCH GOALS ADDED*** 6 extra postcards will be included in the set.
T-Shirt - Original design tee. Black with dark grey print, premium weight t-shirt available in sizes S / M / L / XL / 2XL.
Lettering Services - Ken will letter your comic short story or full issue, including a simple story/issue title (not a masthead or book logo). Check the reward sidebar for details or get in touch via the link at the top of the page. You can see samples of his previous work here - Deviant Art Gallery

Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal on this project. The main content of the book is ready to go to print. All rewards and Kickstarter exclusives will go into production as soon as the campaign ends.
I feel very confident that I’ll be able to fulfill all rewards within 4-6 weeks after a successful campaign ends. I have geared all the work involved in creating and delivering the rewards towards the skill-set, experience and contacts I have gained through working in the design industry for over 10 years.
If there are any unforeseen problems, I will be transparent and upfront about it, while keeping all backers updated as I solve them.
This is my first campaign, but it has been designed to play to my strengths.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
