The best EP not to be released over the past few decades by a band with a bird-themed name has been written and is waiting to fledge into a recording. We want you to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us, eyes cast upwards to the Nest of Opportunity, hands cupped in a gesture of support and benefaction, as you watch the EP rise brazenly into the sky, clawing its way to its full potential. Die happy. Lather us with monetary affection.
The Nest Egg
The Incredible Flight of Birdman (TIFOB) has been a band for a few years and over the last couple has released singles with WET Records and Tiny Crow Records, both produced by Band of Skulls and Phil Selway producer Ian Davenport. After a hiatus while half of the band wildly procreate, we are now ready to record an EP.
We have been planning this aforementioned EP (working title 'Ways of Being Spatial' or 'Talk to Id' or 'Dance With Everyone') for a while and all the work has been done. We would go as far as to say that these songs entirely legitimise the ‘incredible’ part of the band name. If you like what we have released to date (available from highstreet stalwarts such as Woolworths, Andy’s Records, Our Price, Zavvi, and HMV; as well as iTunes, Amazon, etc)... then Jesus Creepers! you will love these.
So what have we got planned?
We’ve booked four days at Chapel Studios in Louth where many of the best bands record in the UK, and we’ve lassoed Tim Donderevo – of Donderevo infamy – into mixing it for us. We will record 5 songs which we will pre-release to Kickstarter friends as an exclusive limited edition EP with special artwork, followed by a full release and flyby in the summer.
We would love you to be part of it, and we can almost certainly guarantee that you shall in turn fall in love (if not with the EP, then with something else, as we vow to enclose a free love spell along with a spritz of aftershave in each pledge package).
Listen to the songs we have on our Birdman YouTube channel to give you a taste of the kind of thing we get up to in the studio with our clothes off: songs such as We Are Made, The Frustrations of H, Where I Can’t See You, and Pressing On You.
We’ve also just posted a new homemade song called Tripped in the Dark. It won’t be on the EP and sounds absolutely nothing like the songs we plan to record, but we are a diverse and perverse bunch, and it will make a nice bedfellow until you bag more Birdman material. So give it a listen.
The plan is as follows:
1. Recording and procrastinating - Until the end of April
2. Embellishing and pre-mixing - Until the end of May
3. Mixing and mastering - Until the end of June
4. Pre-release and reward time - Mid-July
5. Post-Kickstarter full release - Beginning of August (it's going to be a summery-sounding record, so this is bang on)
Nuts and berries
We are aiming for £3,000 to cover the EP project because we want as many of you involved as possible, and we believe we've assembled some great rewards that make it worthwhile for you as well as us. This is the breakdown of costs:
- Studio - £1,600
- CD Reproduction - £336
- Digital Distribution - £30
- Postcards - £66
- Sticker books - £45
- Mastering - £400
- Postage and sundries - £225
- Kickstarter's cut - £297
- God's tithe - £1
- Total - £3,000
So one last appeal. Actually more of a live seance...
Your favourite dead relative, the one who always gave you the great advice, whose opinion you trust more than anyone's, whose voice you often hear, and are in fact beginning to hear right now... yes, we hear it too! We hear the voice and it says, louder and louder, in a tone of excitement and desperation and regret, PLEDGE FOR BIRDMAN. THIS IS WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE IF I HAD THE CHANCE, BY GOD. PLEDGE FOR BIRDMAN, DEARIE. PLEDGE. AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. NOW.
Thanks in advance for all your support and generosity.
We really appreciate it.
Stretch Goal 1
If we exceed our target by £500 (£3,500) we will record a bonus track for the EP which we will make available as a digital copy to everyone who has pledged.
Stretch Goal 2
If we exceed our target by £1,500 (£4,500) everyone who pledged at The Great Tit level or above will receive a luscious exclusive signed vinyl EP. These will look gorgeous.
Stretch Goal 3
If we double our target and get to £6,000 we will record an additional EP at the end of the summer and make a digital copy available to everyone who pledged at The Hummingbird level or above.
Risks and challenges
We won't fail. This is our solemn pledge. The only real risk is a delay due to sickness from the band, or the sound engineer/producer, or extreme weather conditions. But in the unlikely event of any of these circumstances coming to pass we would press on regardless, with new personnel if necessary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
