About

Filming the final concerts of Childsplay - A Documentary film project

Childsplay: Fiddlers, Fiddles and Fiddlemaker, with singers Karan Casey and Aoife O’Donovan, is an unparalleled fiddle supergroup embarking on its final tour ever this November after over 32 years of performing in Europe and the United States. Childsplay features the collective voice of over a dozen violins all made by one violinmaker’s hands (hence the name of the band), along with an all-star supporting cast from the United States and abroad. The group has performed before hundreds of thousands of fiddle-music lovers, recorded seven albums, produced a widely viewed PBS documentary film and inspired musicians around the world with its unique spirit and ensemble signature sound. They are the only touring band featuring the voices of violins all made by the same violinmaker, and in the same way that there is a familial tone to the voices of a family that sings together, Childsplay has evolved a signature sound that is based on original compositions and arrangements and powerful singing surrounded by multilayered harmonies.

Six years ago we made a documentary film live at the Zeiterion Theatre which captured some great concert footage and interviews with the band. That film was shown on PBS for four years and now that Childsplay is ending, we want to create one more film to share the talent, community and spirit that is Childsplay. We have interest from American Public TV to show our new film once it is completed and need your help to finance the making of this final film in order to share it with the world! The film is being directed by Independent filmmaker James Rutenbeck (Lost Nation Pictures, Ltd) and the cinematography will be led by Steven McCarthy, who has received numerous awards for his work on PBS shows including Frontline, the American Experience, American Masters, and Nova.

Among the great artists featured in Childsplay are all-Ireland Fiddle champion (Sheila Falls), two National Scottish Fiddle champions (Hanneke Cassel and Katie McNally), Boston Symphony violinist Bonnie Bewick, superstar vocalists Karan Casey and Aoife O’Donovan, from Pilobolus dancer Molly Gawler and National Endowment for the Arts and National Heritage fellow, dancer Kevin Doyle ... and that isn't even a quarter of the band! Equally important is that the artistic director of the group is Bob Childs, a violinmaker for over 40 years who endured the tumultuous experience of living in five different foster homes in his early years and went on to make violins to give voice to that disruptive experience through his instruments. This final tour, to be made into a film for American Public TV, will be the capstone to an impressive musical journey to honor the tremendous talent, creativity and community that is indeed Childsplay!

My plan

We have received a challenge grant award in which for every dollar that is donated through this kickstarter campaign, it will be matched by $2 by our generous donor. Since the budget for the film is $150,000 we are seeking $50,000 through this campaign in order to ensure we get the grant. Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition, if you don't make your target amount, you don't get any of the funding. So if we get to $50,000 and reach our goal, we get to $150,000!

I know this is an ambitious amount but from our past successes in raising funds to create our last film that was on Amercian Publict TV, Childsplay: Live from the Zeiterion Theatre, and to make our last album, The Bloom of Youth, I feel that together we can make this happen. We have until December 4th to make this happen, so please help us spread the word!

Rewards

One of the comments that I have heard frequently over the years is how the music of Childsplay illicits such power emotions from our audiences. I know that our final shows on November 24th are going to be full of a great range of emotion with all the music that will be played.  For me I have such a sense of pride in all we have accomplished but also know that these final concerts will be full of sadness  and nostalgia knowing that it is all coming to an end after 33 years. What better way to capture those moments than in a film? We are only offering one reward, a signed copy of the DVD, but will deeply appreciate any contribution that moves us closer to our goal of $50,000. Because we are a 501(c)3, anyone who donates over $250 will receive a letter from us noting it as a tax deduction donation.

Risks and challenges

We understand that this is a tremendous ask. The generous benefactor who offered us the challenge grant did it with the caveat that we raise $50,000 with funding that is crowd sourced and funded. He did that because one of the central impacts of our music over the years has been on the generation of a sense of community among our audiences. So what better way to make this film than with the community support that comes from a campaign like this. We will be working diligently to spread the word about this project through our final music tour over the next few weeks. If you could help us spread the word, we would greatly appreciate it!
