The Ningaloo Reef dive watch is the result of over a year of intense design, development and prototyping by Duzu Watches, a Western Australian watch design studio.
In a world filled with homages and vintage watches, we identified an opportunity to step outside the fashionable norm and create our vision of a contemporary tool diver watch. Emphasis has been placed on creating a quality watch that is current, affordable and versatile.
Our first watch, the Ningaloo Reef dive watch pays homage to the World heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef located along the north west coast of Australia, approximately 1200 kilometres north of the Western Australian capital city of Perth. Stretching 260 kilometres, it is one of the longest fringing coral reef systems on our planet and the only large reef located in close proximity to a landmass. Known for its azure waters and high marine species diversity the reef offers superb snorkelling and scuba diving experiences.
Note: At the end of the campaign, a survey will be provided for backers to select which variant they prefer i.e. black DLC or beadblasted/brushed finish and also confirming their dial colour slections.
The Ningaloo Reef is a custom designed 316L grade stainless steel tool sports/dive watch rated to withstand 300m/1000ft of water pressure. 316L Steel grade is chosen by most luxury watchmakers for it’s superior corrosion resistance beneficial in marine environments.
A highly legible dial and extremely robust CNC machined case with a combination of bead blasted and brushed finishes gives it a rugged elegance. Every part has been meticulously designed, refined and engineered to the highest level of quality, on par with many Swiss made watches.
Our bezel consists of a custom designed 316L grade stainless steel outer casing and inlaid with ceramic. We chose ceramic for its ability to deliver extreme durability and longevity, while being highly resistant to scratching and fading. Our ceramic inserts have a subtle matte finish and the slightly recessed markers are filled with industry leading BGW-9 Superluminova lume. The custom 120-click unidirectional bezel is easy to grip which adds functionality to the watch.
The crown has been designed to compliment our bezel which features the same grip pattern, combination of bead blasted and brushed finishes and is emblazoned with our logo. The engineered crown has been designed to maximise ease for unscrewing, setting the time and winding.
The watch features a single domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inside. Sapphire crystal is chosen for its brilliant clarity to maximise legibility in any light and for its exceptional scratch resistance. The anti-reflective coating ensures maximum legibility during daylight by reducing glare. We wanted the bezel and crystal interface to be as smooth as possible.
The hands offer a delicate aesthetic, yet maintain a strong presence. Hour and minute hands are lume filled and the shape of the hands compliment the shapes and proportions of the dial ensuring effortless readability; a design priority throughout. The blue second hand is a nod to the Ningaloo Reef's azure waters.
We wanted to create a design that was unique, yet functional as a tool watch. It was paramount that we got the proportions and shapes of the markers just right, ensuring that they are in complete harmony with the shape of the hands.
The addition of a sandwich dial provides a sense of depth and contributes towards the overall engineered appearance of the watch whilst maintaining a sense of sophistication. The dial design is kept clean and legible, with large markers and numbers and subtle branding. Superluminova lume on the dial and hands enable excellent reading in darkness.
The lugs on the Ningaloo Reef are drilled to accept stainless steel screw bars with hex heads. The screw bars provide both a functional and aesthetic purpose, straps are securely fixed and the engineered appearance contributes to the overall feel of a tough, functional and dependable tool.
The caseback is designed to be ultra tough featuring a deep engraved brand logo and is secured to the case with six (6) machine screws which further enhances the overall engineered aesthetic of the watch.
We made a conscious decision to power the Ningaloo Reef with the Japanese made Miyota 9015 movement. Its a great performer and more than rivals its Swiss counterparts for accuracy and reliability. The 9015 features a decent power reserve, it’s an automatic movement that can be manually wound and incorporates a hacking seconds hand for synchronising between multiple time keeping devices.
The 9015 operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 42 hours. Given, there are movements out there with larger power reserves and faster sweeps, but these tend to come at a premium and often spend more time on the work bench. We just want the Ningaloo Reef to enjoy more time on the wrist.
The beautifully textured thick leather watch straps are made from top grain leather which is sturdy yet soft to touch and comfortable on the wrist. The straps taper in thickness from 5mm thick and 24mm wide at the lug end to 3mm thick and 22mm wide at the buckle. Each strap is beautifully finished with white stitching with the Duzu logo debossed on the inside.
The stainless steel buckle has a brushed finish which matches the case well and the top bar of the buckle is emblazoned with the Duzu logo.
The dial indices and markers, watch hands and bezel markers are filled with industry-leading Superluminova BGW-9 luminescent pigment. Superluminova lume was chosen for its bright and long lasting glow. The subtle blue glow of the BGW-9 is another tribute to the Ningaloo Reef's azure waters.
The Duzu Ningaloo Reef is available in two case variants namely the Brushed/Beadblasted Stainless Steel watch and the Matte DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated Stainless Steel watch.
Each variant is also available with three dial colour options namely Matte Black (standard), Orange and Aqua.
At the end of the campaign, a survey will be provided for backers to select which variant they prefer be it case colour, dial colour, Ningaloo Reef text on/off the dial.

Over the past few months we have been engaged in a marketing drive. We have received plenty of positive feedback and many suggestions on improvements. We have listened to our audience and have decided to implement the most common observations for improvement. These include removal of the Ningaloo Reef from the dial (to provide a more contemporary legible dial) and add lume to the tip of the second hand.
The watch will still be available with the Ningaloo Reef text on. At the end of the campaign, backers will be provided with a survey to confirm their preferences namely text on or text off.
The image below shows what this will look like without the Ningaloo Reef text and with the lume second hand should backers select this as an option.
We would like to share some pictures taken over the past few months as we trialed our watch. We trust that you will enjoy these as much as we have enjoyed sharing them.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Shane Snider (Watcha), Stephen Mazinger (Time to Blog Watches), The Time Bum and Oceanictime.
