What is The Poundshop Cart: Created with both independent designers and small businesses in mind: The Poundshop Cart offers a portable solution to use as a pop-up shop, market stall, or for an event in any location. The cart provides an elegant, practical display for all types of products. It is easy to transport, has adaptable displays, lockable storage and integrated cable port.
How it came about: In 2012 we commissioned designers, Andrew Friend and Sitraka Rakotoniaina, to build a portable shop, as we wanted to travel around London to promote our upcoming poundshop. We gave them a brief of creating a cart that could fit into a six-seater car, light enough to be lifted by two people, and hold around 20 different products.
Since then we’ve had a lot of interest from other designers and small businesses wanting to buy our cart. Over the past few years we’ve seen an increase in independent designers selling their own products alongside a steady rise in pop-up shops and rejuvenated street markets. With so many market stalls looking the same, and with products basically displayed on one level, the challenge now is to stand out in a way that’s both innovative and exciting.
The time has now come to bring the cart to the market!
How it is made: The new Poundshop cart is made using sustainably-sourced birch plywood. We work closely with LAB 83, a digital fabrication bureau based in South East London, using a CNC machine (this is a process used in the manufacturing sector that involves the use of computers to control machine tools) which provides consistency and accuracy, while minimising wastage and therefore reducing the material footprint of the cart, and ensuring a well-crafted unit. The pieces are cut by the CNC, then fitted together using integral joints; the only tool required for assembly being a single allen key.
Cart features: The footprint of the cart is made to fit a normal market stall and fit in a small van.
Size - folded - 1185 x 862 x 875mm
Open - 875 x 1700 x 1950mm
Weight approx 50 kg
It has a 0.5m2 internal and lockable storage, also a cupboard with sliding doors at the back where you can store such things as a till, bags, money, card readers etc.
The cart is fitted with a pegboard wall and includes three shelves with fittings. There are also two hanging bars, to display lighter items such as a T-shirt or tote bag.
The cart comes in three finishes:
Unvarnished (allowing you to customise with paint)
Varnished plywood with formica top
Formica tops are hardwearing and waterproof, perfect for anyone with messy products!
The cart can be ordered in three different colour finishes: black, white or yellow. The wheel hubs are available in either black or yellow.
Cash drawers are either black, white or a combination.
Wheel and brake: The cart has three wheels: two Pneumatic ones, and a solid nylon castor with brake. The wheels can carry up to 100kg. The Pneumatic wheels are made of rubber and commonly used for wheelbarrows. Rubber tyre inflates to 2bar.
Would you like to see it first hand? The cart will be on display at The Poundshop No.18, from 16th - 24th September, located at 15A Cromwell Place Mews, SW7 2LA, London. (nearest tube South Kensington) and at Canopy Market, King Cross, 29 - 1st October 2017.
Early Bird Rewards: For those who buy an early bird cart, you will receive two product stands and a business card holder. The stands have moveable struts for flexible display and fit into the grooves on the lower display surface for a seamless fit.
How your your money will help us: With your support we will be able to produce the first set of carts available for retail at an affordable price.
What happens if funding exceeds the asking amount? We would invest this money in more machinery and further innovation to make the cart even better and enable us to offer you more options!

In the unlikely event that your cart breaks, we would be happy to send you any spare part; should you wish for us to take it in for repair, this could also be arranged. However we cannot be held liable after any alterations have been made to the cart by yourself. You have the right to cancel and return your order within 14 days.

Who are The Poundshop? The Poundshop is run by George Wu and Sara Melin. Founded in April 2010, the idea was born during a discussion about our love for design shops. Not having the capital to set one up ourselves, a friend suggested we should set up a poundshop instead! What started as a joke turned into a real exhibition as we set ourselves the challenge to create the first design poundshop.
The aim of The Poundshop is to spread design to a wider audience by making it accessible through price and engagement. The products are to be sold within the affordable price bands £1, £3 and £5. Working with a wide range of designers, most of whom are new to making products, The Poundshop is the perfect testing ground for them to experiment with new and interesting items. Many of our participating designers have gone on to sell their products in places such as Conran shop, MoMa, V&A, Science Museum, Selfridges and many more.
The Poundshop has worked with many cultural institutions and retailers to establish itself on the design calendar such as Somerset House, Wieden+Kennedy, Selfridges, Loft& – Tokyo, KK Outlet, Au Pount Rouge – Russia, British Council, Wasps Studios - Glasgow, ICA – The Institute of Contemporary Arts.
In May 2013 The Poundshop was picked as one of Selfridges’ ‘Bright Young Things’ – the pioneering project that seeks out and champions the most exciting young creators in the UK. Also in 2013 The Poundshop was named one of the top five creative entrepreneurs on the h.Club 100 list. The h.Club100 list is an annual campaign to identify the 100 most influential and innovative people working across arts, culture and the creative industries. In September 2015 you could catch The Poundshop on BBC One as part the documentary series Poundshop Wars season 2. The Poundshop was described by BBC One as leading the way with an unconventional choice of store design and merchandise, with the aim to introduce a new kind of pound shop to the everyday shopper.

If we get a lot of orders the delivery time might incur a slight delay, however we would also hire more help if necessary to ensure each cart is delivered in good time, and without compromising on quality.
The cart has gone through a lengthy testing period and has been successfully deployed at numerous markets throughout the summer of 2017. We are confident that it lives up to all that it promises!!
