Jem is her name, no one else is the same - and neither is our short film, Truly Outrageous: A Jem Fan Film!
Last year, after the official Jem and the Holograms Movie trailer was released, we created a musical sketch about "Jem's" reaction to seeing a new and unexpected vision. With no amount of press, it quickly became one of our most popular videos, with wonderful comments coming in from new viewers almost every day. We were so overwhelmed with the kindness, support and love from our viewers - people who not only liked what they saw, but felt we could make a great Jem film of our own, that we started to really take the thought seriously. After coming up with the right story, and the right team - we knew this was something we had to do!
But we're not just doing this because of the kindest peer pressure ever seen in the YouTube comments section. We want to produce this film because we have an amazing story to tell!
The Story We Want To Tell:
Yeah, yeah - But What Is The Story ABOUT?
We are bursting to tell you but we also don't want to spoil too much of the plot or too many of the surprises. We are taking a bit from two episodes specifically, one being the crucial backstory in Out of the Past.
BUT! Here's where our characters will be starting:
It's 1988 - Jem and the Holograms are at the peak of their career when old enemies and even older secrets come back to try and bring them down!
See...not a whole lot we can reveal. BUT!
Things You Can Expect:
- Because our story picks up in an alternate world (a world where the show was not canceled) right before the final episode "A Father Should Be", it all takes place in the Spring of 1988! Expect lots of 80s colors, outfits, songs and much more!
- All new music in the style of the music from the show!
- Diverse casting choices.
- Surprise cameos!
- Everyone knows Kimber and Stormer are canon ;)
Things You Won't Find In Our Story:
- This is NOT the Jem and the Holograms origin story. Although we won't leave new viewers behind, we will not be covering in depth the origin of how Jem became Jem. When our story begins, she's already at the peak of her fame!
- We LOVE the IDW comic out right now. So much so that we hope they just get their own film outright (please please please)! Because of our respect and love for what they're doing we will try to steer clear of important aspects of their story that were not based off the original cartoon. Some things will overlap because we both are lovingly adapting the same material.
- We will NOT be criticizing the Live Action movie further. We will NOT include jokes or make comments at the expense of the actors (who were all lovely!), writers, directors, producers, Universal or Hasbro! This is a direct adaptation of the cartoon and will remain in the world of the 80s and the cartoon itself.
This Is A Two Part Story (aka STRETCH GOALS)!
We are very optimistic about our campaign, but we also wrote the script to include some very ambitious elements that are dependent on how much funding we are lucky enough to receive.
Because of this, our very minimum funding goal will allow us to only make Part 1 of the story!
The more goals we unlock the closer to telling the full story, Part 1 AND Part 2. Believe us when we say - you're not going to want to wait too long between the two parts!!! Hopefully, none of us will have to!
Who is Jem?
Jem and the Holograms is a cartoon created by Christy Marx and the Hasbro toy company that began in 1985. In a sea of macho action, and mostly male hero flexing - Jem, the alter-ego of Starlight Records exec and philanthropist Jerrica Benton, is a rocking, brightly colored adult woman who has globe trotting adventures with the help of an artificial intelligence (hologram maker and the ultimate audio/visual entertainment synthesizer...because the 80s) that was created by her late father Emmett Benton. But this wasn't all Jem's show!
What, I Mean, WHO are The Holograms?
The Holograms are not just Jem's back-up band, they were a group of sisters coming together to make the world a better more outrageously fun place! They are full realized and diverse characters in their own right with entire episodes dealing with their hopes and dreams. A huge deal for that era and this one! Foster sisters Aja Leith (lead guitar) and Shana Elmsford (drums/bass), biological little sister Kimber Benton (keyboard) and new sister in rock Raya Alonso (drums) were role models for generations of girls.
What About The Villains?
Jem and the Holograms' biggest antagonists (until the third season) were The Misfits - but to call them villains would underplay their often dangerous hijinx and be dismissive of how they became sympathetic characters during the course of the show. Pizzazz, Stormer, Roxy and later Jetta weren't just "bad girls", they were just as often given a chance to speak their mind and show their sensitive side. Really nuanced for so-called cartoon villains!
Except for Eric Raymond, former executive of Starlight Records, he was just a jerk.

MORE CAST TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN!
When we produce our own short films, sketches and content, we are calling in a battalion's worth of favors and/or using our own money to bring our work to life. As well we should! But it can only take us so far. The plan we have for Jem is the most ambitious concept we've ever had and not something we want to just throw together. As fun and funny as we know this will be, we want to take the quality and production values very seriously. We can't just use favors on this one.
We are hoping through our campaign or through talking to you out there we will prove to all the old fans, new fans and everything in between that we have a Jem production worth your time, attention and support. We chose Kickstarter over all the other crowdfunding websites because we want to know if fans out there are as "all in" as we are. If we do not reach our minimum goal it will be proof to us that this isn't something the fans out there want us to do. But through months of talking to you and sharing our love of Jem and our hope to do her justice we really hope we're all in this together to produce something really special!
Although budgets change and the needs of a production can change, here is our breakdown of cost distribution based on similar productions we have worked on:
We are working with a full team of make-up artists, hair wizards and stylists to create dazzling looks that recreate many of the sensational outfits and styles of the cartoon.
Chrissy Lynn Kyle - Professional make-up/SFX artist, wig sculptress, cosplayer and CREATURE lady - Chrissy can do it all! She will be leading our make-up and hair teams to glamorous glory!
Jade Thompson - Is the extremely talented eye behind the looks of Jem Reacts. She will be leading our wardrobe team and art department to make Jem an exquisite 80s fever dream!
Simply the percentage taken from the campaign should we be successful and achieve our funding goals. We have overestimated this section by a small amount as was recommended to us by Kickstarter veterans. It also accommodates the extra help we will need to send everyone their rewards.
Have you looked to your right!? Golly that's a lot of great stuff we want to give you. The creation and shipment of these rewards will cost a hefty sum but it will be worth it to give back to you and your generous ways!
We have much of the crew already assembled but are waiting to see the outcome of this fundraiser to see if we can officially announce important collaborators and meet their very reasonable needs (YOWZA do we have some great surprises)! This is the biggest slice of the pie because we want to work with the best people we can and be able to honor their hard work and talent with the compensation they deserve. If we get to shoot only Part 1 that is a full 3-4 day shoot that we will need to account for. The shoot becomes a week long (not counting music recording) should we be lucky enough to do Part 2!
Stage Rental/On Set Fees
Simply, this pie piece covers stage fees, rental costs and insurance as well as food and water for our cast and crew! When you're not a real hologram, these things are kind of important ;)
(see next section!!!)
The most lasting part of Jem's legacy is the music! Although we can't use the official songs from the show, nor do we know how to reach Britta Phillips (IF YOU KNOW BRITTA PHILLIPS OR SAMANTHA NEWARK PLEASE EMAIL US AT CHANNEL.CREATURE@GMAIL.COM) - we have written some amazing, and catchy songs based on the 80s style of the original cartoon.
For a taste of what you can expect, here is the song we wrote for Jem Reacts:
We are so lucky to partner again with singer/songwriter sensation (and charming man about town) GLOWBUG!!!
Our 80s era songs will by synth heavy, new wave, pop, and power ballads that will get stuck in your head and get you moving!
We have songs for both Part 1 and Part 2 - and we hope to release both if we're lucky enough to achieve all of our stretch goals!
Truly Outrageous! A Jem Fan Film is a sincere Jem live action adaptation, and one a lot of us fans out there have been dreaming of for a very long time. We hope we have provided many reasons to garner your support but it's not about "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" for us - it's about giving back to you! So if you have questions, concerns or hopes for what you want to see - let us know!
Through this campaign we will always be within earshot to answer your questions via the FAQ or our twitter @creaturetubes or by directly emailing us at email@example.com
We are so excited to bring Jem and the Holograms to life - we hope you'll join us on our Starlight journey!
Risks and challenges
We do not own nor do we have official permission to use Jem, her music or her likeness. There is a risk that at some point during the fundraising, production or even after the YouTube upload that Hasbro will take issue with our fan film. If this remote possibility becomes reality we would assure all parties that this is, in every aspect, a fan film. We will not in any way be personally profiting from this fundraiser and will be keeping meticulous and public records to illustrate where all funding is distributed. Our goal is simple: to tell an engaging, heartfelt and entertaining story about one of our favorite 80s divas and her glamorous world! We truly love this cartoon and want to show not only our reverence and affection but bring the new and uninitiated into Jem's magic!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
