Since the release of my debut EP in 2015 I've wanted to create a full length album. The goal was to feature a full band sound while remaining true to my folk/singer-songwriter roots. To reach this goal I've assembled a group of Nashville's most talented musicians. For the past five months the band and I have been arranging and practicing these ten new songs.
The plan is to record in East Nashville's Bomb Shelter Studios. They're known for their work with The Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Margo Price, and many other great artists!
I truly feel that these are the best songs I've written to-date and I can't wait for you to hear them. They feature the poetic storytelling you've come to expect from a Josh Gray release along with new sounds I know you'll love.
Why do you need so much money?
We want to make the best album possible because we really believe in these songs. The Bomb Shelter Studios records to tape, which results in a warmer sound that really fits this music. We are going to need to hire a pedal steel player, additional string players, and backup vocalists to bring these songs to life. I've already put up $5,000 of my own money towards this project because this album deserves to see the light of day.
When you start adding up costs you start to realize just how much it takes to create a professional album. There are things that many people don't think about like the videographer for the video at the top of the screen. The photographer for the album photos. The art commissioned for the shirt and poster, the printing of the shirt and poster. Album design, CD duplication, mastering. It starts to make your head spin! But trust us we will only spend money to benefit the album and bring you the best experience possible.
Why should you support this album?
"More than your typical singer/songwriter. He is a storyteller, is true to himself, and is a talented artist who cares so much about his art”
— Savvage Media
Now more than ever we need songwriting that speaks it's mind and comes from the heart. My debut EP featured a song called "Stand Together" speaking out against police brutality. This new album will also feature songs about social justice in addition to love, loss, and suspenseful storytelling.
My main focus when I write a song is the lyrics and I put my heart into every line. Everything the band and I play is also done to serve the song. So if you appreciate good songwriting supported by great musicians I really believe you will love this album.
There's one final aspect that I really want to emphasize. What's unique about funding an album this way is you are voting with your dollars. When you pre-order the album you are saying yes I want this to exist. Instead of merely buying something that was going to exist anyway you are a part of the reason for its existence. And I think that's really cool. To think that so many people could come together to help make something. Especially in a time when it's easy to feel like we're in this alone.
Risks and challenges
This is an all-or-nothing campaign. If we don't reach our goal we don't get any of the money and can't record the album or print the rewards. Thank you for reading this, we hope you will join us in making this album a reality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
