Triumvirate is a two player card game set in the classical Roman time period. The first iteration of the game was totally designed, illustrated and 350 handmade copies were all produced by me. I sold all these copies in three months, and used this game to help launch a website designed to promote other independent game designers called Indie Boards and Cards ( www.indieboardsandcards.com ). I’d like to prove out a successful business model of starting with a handmade game, and expanding that game into one that you can find on a store shelf (at least on the shelves of small game stores).
Triumvirate has been very well received; here is a great online review of the game: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/449803/a-comprehensive-pictorial-overview-an-innovative-a. Of course as you read through and look at that review, you’ll notice that my artwork is, let’s just say less than professional not to mention the production has a DIY feel.
Right now I am making over the entire game with truly professional art. At the end of the video you will see samples of the new card art. I have all new art work lined up, and am in discussions with production companies to get 1000 copies of the game produced. I am using Kickstarter to help presell this project. The way that Kickstarter funding works takes the risk out of pre-ordering with a small publisher. Kickstarter and Amazon payments will hold your funds until I have everything ready to send out. So you can support a small publisher by pre-ordering the game but still be safe in knowing if for any reason the game doesn’t get produced that you’ll get your money back.
I have a couple producer levels of sponsorship available. These higher levels get you additional rewards and highlight your commitment to keeping independent board game producers in business. I appreciate your support at all levels and look forward to providing the backers with additional updates as I progress the game in its production process.
More about the game:
Background Theme: The Roman Republic is breaking under its own successes. Rome is crowded with plebeians who have tasted military victory yet are unable to feed their families. Three great leaders emerge in Rome’s time of need; Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gaius Julius Caesar. Drawn together in their opposition to Senate policies, these three form the First Triumvirate to rule Rome in partnership. Yet ultimate corruption lies in ultimate power and as Rome wrecks with revolt, the Triumvirate is unable to maintain the bonds between them.
On the banks of the Rubicon a legionnaire’s footstep brings Civil War and sets upon a course of events from which an emperor will emerge. How will you master the tribulations that are to come on the field, in the senate and through the streets of Rome?
Contents: 27 Cards in 3 Colors, 9 Consulates (red, yellow and black figures), Senate Scoring Tableau, 2 Player Tableaus, 3 Round Scoring Markers, and a Dealer Marker. Rules are currently available in eight languages, including Classical Latin.
Objective: Triumvirate: Civil War is an indirect, trick taking game for two. Players represent the leaders of Roman noble houses, who through the course of the game will be maneuvering the political struggles that determine which of the triumvirs will be crowned as Emperor.
A round is played as a series of hands until a suit has won 3 hands. A hand is played as a series of 2 card tricks until a suit has won 3 tricks. The player that has the highest total value of pledged legion cards to the Emperor (the suit that won the round) wins the round. The game is played to a set number of rounds as agreed to by the players (recommended to play 2 out of 3 rounds).
More about Me and Indie Boards and Cards (www.indieboardsandcards.com)
Indie Boards & Cards is a traditional game publisher. The games that you will find on the website are very good games that are available from self or small publishers. The site is open (and free) to any other small game publisher that has an interesting and fun game.
Why have I developed the Indie Boards and Cards website? Playing and helping small designers to sell their games is a hobby of mine that builds upon over a decade of sales and marketing experience in the computer software industry. Outside of selling my own games, Indie Boards and Cards will not make any money from any of the games that are recommended here, it is a service for both the consumer and producer of these games.
For designers and self/small publishers, Indie Boards and Cards offers a unique publishing, marketing and sales venue and advice. Whether you are seeking a more traditional publisher, or want to try to self publish your game Indie Boards and Cards can help.
I should also mention that one of the goals of mine is not only to provide a platform for game designers, but also to give back to our global community. That is why I have (and will continue to) donated a $1 of game sold at my website to Heifer International (www.heifer.com), a global organization that helps communities build themselves sustainable livelihoods through micro-investments, livestock gifts and the tools & training to use them.
Thank you for your time, and I really hope you take a moment to review the great rewards I have to offer to help you help me get Triumvirate off the ground.
