Hi. We are Melange Creperie.
We've been making the best crepes in town for the past 5 years from a tiny street stand at the corner of Westheimer and Taft. We’ve loved every minute of that time, but we're ready to take things to the next level with our own brick and mortar restaurant. At our current location the lease is up so this is the perfect time to explore new opportunities. We have big plans for our little business, but to get there we need your help.
With this Kickstarter we have an initial goal of $50,000 to help open our restaurant. Our true dream is our secondary goal of raising $100,000 to KEEP US IN MONTROSE. This is our home. It’s where our regulars are, where the city goes to eat and we believe that Montrose is the heart of Houston culture. Montrose is the Left Bank of Houston, with all the artists and students; the Greenwich Village of Houston with the Pride Parade and the bohemians. We want to stay here where the action is!
In 2014 we were named one of the Top Ten restaurants in Houston by the Houston Chronicle (#10). Without tables, chairs, bathrooms or even walls we can compete with the best in town. Now we want to show everyone how much we can really do!

• Hey, check out our Yelp reviews.
For the past year our restaurant model has been in development. We are going to keep doing what we are best at, which is offering a personable, quick service showcasing seasonal fresh recipes from cuisines across the world. In addition to our wonderful crepes, we will offer innovative sides and drinks. Our restaurant will be a happy relaxed spot for everyone. Grab a quick bite alone, have a romantic dinner or brunch with your girlfriends. We can even host your birthday party or baby shower.
In addition to our in house options we will continue to offer private catering, crepe street stands, wedding catering, event rentals and wholesale orders. Our business model is well rounded and we can meet the needs of many facets of the marketplace.
Our current street stand business is known as the best in town but we do not have a presentation large enough to accommodate our potential customers. There is a great opportunity for us to grab the brass ring and fill one of Houston’s culinary voids.
We work with great local producers. We believe in supporting our neighbors and their offerings contribute to the deliciousness of our food. Our vendors include, Houston Dairymaids, Atkinson Farm, Urban Harvest, Froberg's Farm, Swede Family Farm, Emile Street Community Garden, Plant It Forward, Moorhead's Farm, Mill King Creamery, Lucky Layla Dairy and Sinfull Bakery. We also grow our own fruits and vegetables and enjoy foraging the urban landscape.
Melange Creperie has an environmental commitment to building a restaurant with a Zero Waste policy. We recycle all metal, plastic and cardboard in the kitchen and compost all scraps. Our food service model includes no Styrofoam. We use only paper wrappers and recyclable tin. By reducing or eliminating food trash and water conservation efforts we hope to build on models of green restauranteurs and promote such efforts in Houston.
We can offer some great rewards here on Kickstarter but if you are interested in equity investment over $7,500 please contact us directly. We have some amazing people who believe in our vision and we want to thank them for all they've committed to us already.
Where will this money go? To important stuff of course. We will use the majority of our kickstarter funds to buildout a restaurant- chairs, tables, ovens, fridges, crepe makers, walls, doors, windows, floors, ceiling fans, cute little lights, big 'ol floodlights, maybe a patio, parking lot fixing, forks, stoves, freezers, signage, menus, planters, plants, electrical wiring, plumbing, toilets, sinks, spoons, knives, coffee making stuff, big jars, little jars, mason jars, benches, awnings, immersion blenders, giant pots, salamanders, hooks and ladders.
Research, permitting, accounting, insurance and setting up accounts with vendors will also be needed.
Then we'll need some to pay staff to train and get our feet under us before we open. Phew! Almost there to opening day!
Risks and challenges
In the restaurant business 1 in 4 restaurants close or change ownership in their first year. 60% fail in 3 years or less. We have survived for 5 years now, beating the odds. We've watched the restaurant across the street change hands 4 times since we have opened at the corner of Westheimer and Taft Street.
Our price controls and seasonal menus have contributed to our success and we will continue this in any larger scale business model. Our low overhead has also helped, and the lessons learned in street food thriftiness will help us shape our restaurant business.
Our restaurant will be beautifully designed with personable and individualized service, a modularly scaled employee model, and innovative seasonal dishes that speak to the ethnic diversity of our city. Our research and experience in crepe service has given us valuable insight into how we can be the best. We have solved the bottleneck that plagues many crepe restaurants and pushes serving times back by experimenting with our division of labor. Melange Creperie employees will taste everything and be encouraged to give feedback and cross-train with multiple duties within the restaurant.
As soon as investment is acquired we will immediately permit our plans with the city, consult engineers, form a construction crew and begin our renovation. Training staff will take full advantage of the best crepe makers in Houston and consultations from some of the city’s leading experts in specialty products and culinary innovators. Our goal is to bring crepes to thousands of people in this city and to create another culinary institution.
Relying on our friends for strength, our peers for advice and on our families for support has been very important to us and we are grateful for all of them. We want to give back to the city, to our loyal customers and to everyone we depend on. To do so we will continue to be open to change and take hardships as they come. Starting this new evolution in our business will not be easy but we believe it will be worth it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
