Well despite all the drama we shared with you last week, we have been moving forward. If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, please read the last update (its pretty important).
Filling in the first forest. We are starting to get photos cataloged and ready to roll. The samples today are of some trees and a few chunks of land to give you and idea of what you will be running around on.
The first forest has 887 trees ready to go so far! WHAT??? Why so many?? It's not easy to recreate a specific photo shoot given our current situation and our new tiny studio. We want to make sure we have plenty options when putting the final product together, so we don't have to go back if we miss something.
Technology stuff for those who care. Since we aren't using any digital or 3d modeling, we have to work with nothing more than 2d images or "sprites". To make the game feel more dynamic we shoot everything in very plain white light and use in-game lighting to darken or lighten the scene and cast real time shadows much as you would see in a modern 3d game. We use bumpmaps to trick the light into thinking it's hitting 3d objects.
This is an update on that mini-game mentioned in the update before last.
The Mini-game (AKA Demongeon) is moving right along. Even though we mentioned it was pretty much ready to submit, we just don't have it in our blood to half-ass anything (Except for when I crank out these updates without proof reading or spell-checking anything). We haven't gone overboard but we did add and tweak some things. (I'll add some screenshots below)
Demongeon Soundtrack on Spotify
The opening track shared with Knite was good but, we felt it needed a little something....
Lex cranked out 3 brand new original songs with a completely diff vibe than the music from Knite. Its heavy, its dark and it seems to fit nicely in a fast paced game with a demon (at least we think so)!
We'll have more ways to get the music coming up too. So, if you don't use Spotify, don't worry!
So when can we play the game?
It's just matter planning the release and getting some press lined up. It's just a mini-game but we wanna do it right! In other words we pretty dang close!
All the major mobile platforms for sure (iOS, Google Play, Windows Phone, Amazon)
We're still looking at desktop options. No word exactly but we'll get it on something. Most likely browser based for cross platform.
We'll be releasing a game play trailer soon but here are some screen shots and a link to the original teaser
If you like what you see please share and spread the word!
Lex and I worked on a couple smaller projects a while back. We knew we would be working very closely for years so we thought it made sense to test the waters with couple smaller 2d games just to get a sense of working together first. One was a game we made in about a week called "Junktopia" (free on iphone) and another simple game called "Demongeon"......
Demongeon was mostly finished but since it was just a simple little game we abandoned it before releasing it and moved on to Knite.
Demongeon originally a hidden 'Easter Egg"
Wetbones, the main character and his lore are tied to Mistland. We knew we would at least cross paths with him in Knite and the Ghost lights so, we decided we would include his original mini game as a hidden or unlockable "Easter Egg". The game play is completely different than the main game so, this would be much like unlocking original 2d Metroid in Metroid Prime for example.
Wetbones isn't exactly a bad guy. However, he's certainly not a good guy by any means. In reality he was really never meant to walk in Mistland at all. He was summoned, captured, and enslaved by Master Demetrius the Alchemist. Demetrius is a very much a bad guy and should have never brought a demon to Mistland.
In Demongeon you play as Wetobones trying to escape Demetrius's Castle. Since our original goal was to make a simple minigame, this seemed like the perfect backdrop for a stylized but simple runner. After all he is running and escaping. Since we never got around to releasing it, we though making it playable as an easteregg seemed like a great way to have some fun with an otherwise unknown character you cross paths with.
Releasing it now?
We will just go ahead and release it now (for free) for mobile devices since it was basically done over a year ago.
Do we really have time to mess around with a mini game?
Don't worry this won't slow down with Knite at all. It will take maybe a day to port it to a couple devices depending on demand. In fact if it is well received, it can only help spread the word about Knite and the Ghost lights. Yes, we will have a HUGE add for Knite in teh minigame since it's only real purpose is to support the game we are working on.
